2023 Toyota GR86 review: Sports coupe is angrier than ever - but is it better than the original 86?

  • The new-generation 2023 Toyota GR86 is a more focused and angry sports car than the first-gen - but does that make it better?
It has been to the Toyota GR school of hard knocks, where the new Series 2 hachi-roku model has been made to be more assertive, more sporty, considerably faster and arguably a lot more convincing as a sports car than ever before.
Those changes have come at the expense of a few things, though. The last one was nicer to live with, with a smoother ride being the biggest difference. This new one is harder, harsher and more aggressive than the first take on the 86 (known as GT86 is some markets).
Prices are up by some big margins, too - and in this review, Matt Campbell helps you figure out whether the extra money is worth it or not.

Loved my 2012 86, the price of the new one makes it less of a no brainer than the original.

Is there an option to turn off the Lane Change Flash feature, as I have in my VW Golf?

A manual GTS GR86 in my area is $50,784 delivered whereas a Subaru BRZ S manual is $45,730 delivered. As someone who ordered a GR86 April I am really struggling with this. I know they will sell all the cars but it feels like the enthusiasts (who will purchase the manual) are being penalised. I am about to cancel my order and go with Subaru. As the previous owner of a 2013 86 I am so disappointed with Toyota on this. The manual misses out on a lot of safety tech in the auto so there is even less justification for parity pricing. If I had not stayed loyal to Toyota I would have my car by now for over $5k cheaper. Not happy.

Agreed. The price is excessive and manual owners are getting an especially bad deal. I would really like to upgrade to the GR, but am going to hold off for awhile to see if Toyota comes to its senses. Also disappointed that I can only get the red stitching on the interior if I go with that ghastly red carpet! If it wasn't for the style of the grille and air intakes on the BRZ, I'd switch over, but I just don't think it looks anywhere near as good.

Apparently the tuning, drive experience is better in the GR….something to consider if you haven’t cancelled. The Toyota will be more desirable on the used market in 5 years time.

I wonder what caused the massive price hike in AUS. Here in the US the price only went up like $2K for each trim

My understanding is the competition. In other countries the gr86 is similar price to i30n, the mustang, the camaro, the mx5 and the wrx.... ill attach a pic if i can

After waiting 5 months I finally Got my new 86. $51k but no Sat nav. Yes it has apple car play but I live in regional Australia so phone navigation drops out all the time as soon as I get out of metro area. My previous Toyota 86 2017 model had no such issues and that Sat always worked brilliant. Tell me another model car that doesn’t have Sat nav let alone a car costing north of $50k. Most people won’t realise that a mobile phone is much less effective than a factory Sat nav. And don’t get me started on the safety issues and legal issues if you touch your phone whilst driving. The Screen is very small too. Apart from that it’s a great car but come on toyota…….not including Sat nav is going backwards.

You don't buy this car if you care about:
    1. Fuel consumption
    2. Auto gearbox
    3. Safety BS blah blah blah ( I hate that stuff on my CX5, most of the time its downright dangerous)
Just buy the BRZ..... Subarau is so much cooler than Toyota.
Anything under $50k these days is normal. When your'e paying $8 for a cauliflower you'll expect $50k for this thing.... It's 2023 after all and we are all F&%ked.
Life is too short to drive a boring car they say.

The main reasons they didn't want to add a turbo is because that would increase the price another 10 or 20 thousand dollars majority of buyers aren't looking to spend more money sure!! more hassle tiny bit more fun, for a car like this! doesn't need a turbo when it's and for the content and those manual gear heads, depends on if your goanna track this car everyday yeah! get a manual for those who generally have traffic filled areas and using it for grocery runs, yeah! go for the reliable hassle free auto.

    • @hughhunt1800
      @hughhunt1800 Před 11 měsíci

Hi, autos are, without exception, less reliable (and less fun) than manual transmissions. Adding a turbo would have been cheaper than redesigning the engine. It's not turboed for the same reason you shouldn't buy the auto; it's designed to be a pure sports car.

Also Toyota didn’t want a gr86 turbo to compete with the Supra.
