    Early bush pilots would hang a Plumb Bob from the planes cabin.

      that’s a simple yet very effective idea

      That won't work all the time. What if you're in a spiral and pulling on the yoke and thus have a high g force.

    Good explanation as always, but it's a little more difficult to explain it to new students. Took me 30+ minutes once to explain these vestibular illusions.

    Great explanation. I was talking with a friend about a crash that was caused by this (an Air India flight, don't remember the number). It's very hard for people who don't fly to imagine how someone could possibly be so wrong about their position in space. It's deadly when the pilots are in IMC and don't trust their instruments for whatever reason. But our bodies are just not good at this, we weren't made to fly.

    Interesting enough but I still can’t understand why the pilot didn’t cancel this flight knowing he didn’t have instruments and wasn’t able to see. So sad !

    Now I understand that JFK Jr.'s vestibular system was not in it's proper place before his tragic death on his Piper Saratoga plane in July 1999.
    Sad, but true story.
    The main antidote is:
    Trust in all your instruments onboard the aircraft or you'll be another statistic like JFK Jr.
    P.S. He also had ADHD.

    Good video however… the vestibular system is only reliable when you have the ability to see outside and have visual indications. When you are flying in imc or reduced visibility. The vestibular system becomes completely unreliable and all focus should be on flight instruments.
    In this video you explain that pilots rely on the vestibular system when flying in imc. Which is wrong we rely only on the flight instruments.

    has it ever occurred to a plane that the artificial horizon got messed up and the pilots had to NOT trust it to fly properly?

      West Air Sweden Flight 294. One attitude indicator failed, the captain trusted it, sadly.

      Yes, but we are trained to recognise an instrument failure and fly "partial panel", i.e. we ignore the failed instrument and fly best we can with the remaining ones.

    • @oscardrahos8912
      @oscardrahos8912 Před 4 měsíci

      Airplanes or helicopters are huge on redundancy. We don’t have 1 single instrument in the airplane. We have multiple so that when one fails there are always a backups. This is why pilots are trained to cross check instruments when they can’t see outside. One may be completely wrong and it’s important that pilots are qualified to notice a problem with one instrument based on cross checking it with others.

    It seems that left and right would be confusing but not up and down.
    Wouldn't the blood rush to the pilot's head and gravity weight your body when the pilot is upside down like on a park ride?

    • @shil8952
      @shil8952 Před 2 lety +1

      Not really because the plane isn't still therefore the g forces can vary based on the flight path the plane has

    • @Tensho_C

      if you are upside down, you can still feel right side up if you accelerate towards the earth at twice the speed of gravity
