Ram truck stuck on sand dune, heading into the Inland Sea. Can we prevent disaster ? سيلين , العديد

  • We received a message that there was a pickup truck in trouble. It was on the side of a very steep soft dune, almost into the sea.
    We followed the GPS to a whatsapp location, at Khor Al udeid, the Inland Sea on the border with Saudi Arabia.
    When we arrived there was no one there. We called the number that had also been sent to us.
    The owners of the truck were just along the coast waiting for a call.
    We positioned the cruiser to get a winch rope to the truck.
    At first the Land Cruiser was being pulled forwards. We anchored it to another Land Cruiser.
    Then the winch stalled, the pull was to heavy.
    We rigged a snatch block to the line. This doubles the winch capacity whilst halving the line speed.
    The pickup truck then came up.
    because of the angle of the dune, when it reached the top, it became high centred on the ridge there.
    A second vehicle with a winch came along and we connected both winches to the pickup and pulled it over the ridge.

      I’m gonna say they probably didn’t see the drop until it’s too late, when you drive in the sand dunes it gets very hard to tell where a hill turns into hard drop-off because horizon can blends in with the peak and hills. Always walk and peek over your crest for drops!

      The video seems to be bogus. Where is the disturbance in the sand where the truck drove over the edge? The sand is nice and smooth at that point just like the rest of the edge. If the truck had gone over the edge there would have been a flat, scraped off area where the under carriage drug the sand. Where are the tire tracks going down to the truck? No tire tracks either. And lastly...at that radical slope, gravity would most likely have pulled the truck down hill into the water.

    • @QatarSandMan
      @QatarSandMan  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yes, they do overheat. I think some advanced Warn winches have a setting that will shut them down when they get too hot, though you can override that with a setting. I think this winch has a continuous duty cycle of around 2 minutes.
      However, I just run it till it's too hot to touch. We have air temperatures of 50°C here in the summer, so it's pretty difficult not to exceed the equipment ratings. Basically, a winch is a consumable, I go through a winch every couple of years.

    Toyotas to the rescue, as always. It seemed that the Ram(if it was) didn't even have a LSD or diff lock on the rear as only one rear wheel was spinning when he applied power near the top.

    I'm all about cars and trucks, off-roading, racing, etc - but for the LIFE OF ME WHAT THE heck was this person trying to accomplish?????!!!!! There's NO where to go, I'm just at a loss for words, there's ZERO possible routes, no crossings, no connecting roads, the only possible outcome for anyone with a brain is going straight down and getting stuck!......... congrats, mission accomplished!

    • @QatarSandMan

      Superwinch Talon 12.5 SI. 12,500 lb. It's getting on a bit now, 400 + recoveries in 4 years. It may be discontinued now. We have a Warn Zeon Platinum 12,000 lb ready to go on when this one dies. The warn seems better quality but only has half the line speed.

    Not bashing, genuinely asking, isn't it hard on the winch to winch for that long at once?

    • @QatarSandMan
      @QatarSandMan  Před měsícem +1

      Yes, very hard. That winch has done over 400 recoveries. They generally last me a couple of years. It's much worse in the Summer, we regularly have ambient temperatures of around 50°C.

      @ArsonistArborist Před měsícem

      @@QatarSandMan I bet. I usually will run it for a bit then let it cool down. But I guess if you're doing it commercially, time is money, you just have to get the job done. Makes sense

    @18:30 Now they accidentally put it into forward instead of reverse....... Oops. (Big smile)..... Hey, I was wondering why the people did not dig out the top of the slope a bit, to ease the winch tension when the truck neared the top. Prohibited or environmentally unsound? Something else? I have had a tow much like this and we did that before starting.

    Don't ever winch with out something with weight over the cable in case it breaks

    • @QatarSandMan
      @QatarSandMan  Před 4 měsíci +2

      We never use cable. We use synthetic Rope. It doesn't stretch and has little mass, therefore stores very little energy. Have snapped a few.

    Very surprised bumper didn't rip off

    • @QatarSandMan
      @QatarSandMan  Před 4 měsíci +8

      There is a hole through the bumper that gives access to a tow point, directly through a chassis member, which sits inside the bumper. There was no load on the bumper.
