  • It has been non-stop throwing over the last few weeks, with preparations for Ceramic Art London well underway. This was one of the vases I made last week on my new Skutt wheel.
    My potter's wheel is the Skutt Professional Wheel, supplied by Cromartie Hobbycraft*:

    It was amazing to watch what could be done to the top well after I would have given up. Nice saves. I learned a lot. Thanks Matt.

    What is the rectangular uellow sponge you use? A pottery or kitchen rectangular sponge altered?

    Absolutely stunning and thank you for sharing. I wondered how you turn the base with such height?

      Thank you :) I use a thrown chuck to trim my vases - an example of one from before in a video here: czcams.com/video/fKPnwUevAH8/video.html

    Hey Matt I love everything about your work, the form and the crystalline glazes are just epic!! I would love to see a cross section of one of the simpler bottle forms. I’m really intrigued to see the wall thickness in the lower third of the form once you’ve dried and stretched the clay. Please if possible?

      Thank you for the kind comments :) this is definitely something I will consider doing when I'm not under so much pressure to get finished work made for an upcoming exhibition haha!

      Matt Horne Pottery hey thanks for the reply Matt! Another great kindness would be a proper potters review of the wheel you use. I have a Shimano whisper T and was considering an upgrade and that one looks a good one. I live in wales just down the road from the Aberystwyth arts centre where the international ceramics festival is held and if I’m not mistaken I seen a pot of yours there a few years back now??

      It depends on what you're looking for in a wheel. I like the Skutt because it's extremely powerful, it has a large metal splash tray which is easy to clean, and it's also fully height adjustable. However, the pedal is very sensitive and so I think the SSX speed control upgrade would be a good option if you were considering this wheel.
      I don't think it was my pot in Aberystwyth, as I've never exhibited there. I will be at Ceramic Art London in a couple of weeks though :)

    Hi Matt just found your channel and amazed at your wonderful work! Do you have to use porcelain clay for the crystal glaze? Thanks Lynne New Zealand

    • @Matthornepottery
      @Matthornepottery  Před 2 lety

      Thanks Lynne - yes either a porcelain or a smooth stoneware clay, as rough clays can make the crystals over-nucleate on the surface.

    Is the sky wheel really better than other wheels, such as shimpo?

    Nice videa, and you skills of throwing are advanced. But your "trade mark" pencilneck ruined that vase for me. I've learned from this: being experienced is knowing when to stop.

      In the 12 years running my business full time i've learnt that appreciation of form is personal preference. I am experienced enough to know what forms my customers prefer and what tends to work best with my glazes, but I know that it won't always be to everyone's taste - and that's ok too. Thanks for watching :)
