Even if your not into gear boxes, the science of engineering , or getting amazing lessons on how to fix stuff, this guy is so amazing to watch, honest, passionate, sincere, gives me faith in people again, takes my mind off all the lies and bullshit in the world with his honest down to earth way. Its certainly not just about gearboxes......or am I just really stoned? Either way I’m a believer...

    First of all I would like to say I could give a rats rear end about the auto focus. The fact you take the time to do these videos and share this type of in depth information is so appreciated. I thank you for your efforts to educate and really train people to think about what they are doing. You have often talk about workmanship. I have to say unfortunately workmanship is more caught than taught. The problem universally in the automotive business is very few these days have the passion to do the very best they can and really do a good job. I deal mainly with automatic transmissions believe it or not in a dealership. When you where taking this apart and showing the poor workmanship it reminds of the units i have taken apart that have been apart sometimes 3 times before I get it. Valve body bolts that are not even tight, rolled seals, seals put in with punches, on and on. Anymore before I start to diagnose something I will find out if it has been worked on already or not. Most of the time if it has been worked on before there is something that was not put together correctly during the prior repair. I have watched guys in dealerships and at independents put together the transmission with an impact and never touch a torque wrench. I am not kidding here. The moral of the story here is, if you do not have a passion for what you are doing then don't do it. Find something you do have a passion for and do it well. Because when you do a crappy job on something, later on somebody else has to fix it. Thanks Paul for your hard work and your passion. It is inspiring.

    The hardest part of rebuilding a manual trans is always the "little" things: recalcitrant drive pins, snap rings that won't release and keep slipping out of the tool, gaskets that stick like epoxy, wear and damage in completely unexpected areas...I feel your pain, Paul! But it's an addiction; you have to see what secrets are hiding in there, and what can be saved.

  • @mikes9939
    @mikes9939 Před 4 lety +1

    Great video, frustrating when people do such stupid stuff like putting a nail in place of the correct pin. And also the extensive use of silicone sealer. Might want to check that camera, it keeps changing focus slightly depending on how the trans. was moved around. Touchy autofocus. Also might want to find a better location for the microphone, the audio is a little low in volume and makes it difficult to hear your comments along the way sometimes. We appreciate your showing us this piece of work.

    I have recently purchased three Chevy 409 cars. They're all clones, but I don't care, they were a lot less than numbers-matching. One is a 62 Impala 409 425 with a Tremec 5-speed, I've only driven it for less than 5 minutes, the next is a 63 Biscayne with a 409 425 and a Muncie M20, and the last that I have here at my house is a 62 Bel Air 409 425 with a borg-warner T-10 that pops out of 2nd gear. I wish I was brave enough to tackle rebuilding. I know they aren't complicated, and I have a friend that helps me rebuild automatic transmissions, we may be doing okay 4L880E in the very near future. The 63 Biscayne and 62 Bel-Air both have 308 gears, and both came with for 10 p pazzis, but they still sound busy on the highway due to the solid lifters. One day I'll get them all to my house. The Biscayne and Impala are both in Canada, one sitting in a heated garage, the other in a barn full of mice lol

I don't know much about transmissions but plan on tackling this if i can find the right parts as my second gear sychro is shot. I don't know of any kits with stronger gears. I have never rebuilt one.. Mercedes is very good with parts. So just go to Mercedes to get them. If it is a ZF box there are certain fixtures and pullers for them. Same with the Getrags. So I would advise to find a good overhaul manual and read it before tackling it

      Enrique - I was interested in looking up your car since I also have a C-Class with a 6spd. Your transmission is actually a Mercedes unit. The transmission model number is 716.6. I'm not an expert, but I think it is unlikely that you will find stronger aftermarket parts for it. But you can find the OEM workshop instruction manual on eBay, which will provide detail on how to do the job and what tools/parts you will need. Good luck!
