FIRST CLASS on the Nairobi SGR

- ALL ABOARD! Faster than driving and cheaper than flying is truly what the Nairobi SGR is. For our first ever ride on the SGR, we travelled from Nairobi to Voi on our way to Tsavo for our first safari in this region of Kenya.
The SGR is not a highspeed train and is not particularly luxurious compared to most resent railway project. That being said, the first class wagons are spacious and comfortable with plenty of space to work or relax while onboard. The SGR also goes through two different National Parks including Nairobi National Park and Tsavo National Park so animal sightings are very common. We saw lots of elephants!
The SGR also has a restaurant onboard with a descent food selection at a very descent price.
Overall a good experience which we would recommend to anyone who is looking for convenience and money saving. The upgrade from economy class to first class is also REALLY WORTH the price from about 700ksh to 2100ksh.

good
Always traveling with SGR economy
Can't afford first class since I'm still schooling 😁
But hoping for the best 😂😂😂
It still a great way to travel. 👍🏼
I like that....security at the SGR makes any airport look like kindergaten😅😅😅😅
Its so true! But just in Nairobi haha! The security in Voi was a joke! 😅😅😅
@@DaveMani 😅😅😅....
@@DaveMani Mombasa is also as heightened as Nairobi.
I actually lost my backpack going through security at the SGR... coming from the US, I'm so used to buying my ticket and booking the train without delay or whatsoever. But I was so overwhelmed by all the extra security and screening that you have to go through, sheesh. I'm like, if the dog and the first screening doesn't find anything on ppl, is all that extra screening really necessary?
@@Bawse215 you lost your backpack at SGR security???..like you put your bag down , stand right there , the dog sniffs n you pick it...I don't mean to be rude or anything thing but, loosing a bag at SGR security while standing Right there is the highest level of carelessness I have ever heard....if you lost it inside the train , I would understand...
Nobody had done a proper video of the train ride, you guys did it so effortlessly.
I'm glad you enjoyed :)

I'm Kenyan and I've never travelled on a SGR. I fly often. I think next time I'm gonna use SGR
It's worth a try :)
The Old Railway, i.e "The Lunatic Express" took about twenty hours to Mombasa and had sleeping coaches. The first class was more luxurious, and served three course meals in the restaurant. Even had a police station and cells at the back.
Oh really! I did not know that.
It was the best. I miss it.
Was actually "The Lunatic Express". Named so by the opposition party in the UK at the time.
Took 12 hours
Does it still operate?
I can't wait to come back home and experience the SGR for the first time ❤🙏
You're gonna love it.
I love all what I see. I've never been into a sgr but I can see it looks exactly like in the plane even the toilet. Thanks for showing us inside of a first class sgr
Ot really did feel like a plane!!
I've used both first class and economy, and the fact that am a loner traveller first class is the best,it's way comfortable, access to the restaurant and every body be minding their business, economy is good if you are traveling as a group anyway as a loner traveller you will hate facing strangers for 8 hours, you can't sleep urgh
I would definitely agree with that! :)
Wonderful perspectives!
Yes the railway line crossing especially through the Nairobi NP caused lots of discontent from conservationists. The fear of cutting off animal migratory routes, noise distractions and altered sceneries was eventually mitigated by the long flyover track across the park. Same with Tsavo NP. Big animals like elephants and giraffes can safely cross through the underpasses
Yeah thats why I'm not for it completely but I can see the good in it as well for the people.
Nothing was mitigated, it's a huge eyesore. It reduced the park surface area and introduced invasive species during the construction, and caused alot of ecological damage elsewhere in kenya due to sand mining for the huge amount of concrete needed to build it. And I've never seen a single train cross over it.
@@timosnieder4637 Do you live in Utopia!? That's the price that any ecosystem pays for such major infrastructural developments. Trains ply through the park without any hitch and no one is complaining.
@@timosnieder4637 its better than the one the Europeans constructed that actually cut through the Tsavo NP with no overpasses hence animals being knocked dead off the railway line by trains. That was actually the biggest eye sore.
It's crazy how many trains pass through national parks at ground level in Europe with no complaints but when Kenya mitigates this with flyovers to minimise animal disruption you get likes of Timo sounding off like they are the morality police. African countries also have to industrialise and I'm glad that Kenya is doing so in a considered way.
I love you two, the way you advertise Kenya!!! One would think we're born there. Indeed you are the best ambassadors Kenya has
wow we really appreciate that! :)
Trie
Amazing content, it's about time you guys tried the SGR. I think most of the railway in the national parks is elevated so animals can cross, hence the hefty $3bn price tag.
Exactly 👍🏼🐆
The 7km viaduct/bridge across NNP costs a whooping $420 million usd if you read the feasibility report... If the railway had avoided the park and was built in human populated areas, the pricetag would have gone up to $625m

Made this trip 22 years ago to Mombasa with the old railway. Takes more then 12 hours to be there..😁 🐘🐘🐘
Yeah, I heard it was very long...
As kenyan American visiting home, and debating whether to fly or try the SGR, this video was very helpful. Thanks guys
Glad I could help. SGR first class is pretty nice and about 10% of the cost of flying.
After this I am definitely trying the sgr 1st class. Thank you for this 👏👏👏
You're gonna like it 👍🏼
Coming home next week, I was contemplating SGR for my first time in Mombasa.. Thanks for this
You should try it. MUCH cheaper than flying!

Kenya is for sure awesome :)
I love you guys together 😍😍
Thank you Mimi!!!
Took the express one in March and I enjoyed it.it was like a safari.clean.you can also carry your own food and snacks and is timely
Yeah the express to Mombasa is a very good option. 🚂
unfortunately (or fortunately) they banned carrying your own alcohol. you can buy beer though on the train
@@TheTororist they have never allowed people to carry their own alcohol ever, however they used to sell it on board but I have it on good authority that they stopped.
SGR is classic and fun travel, enjoy Ke
For sure :)

Thank you Mani for the awesome content. Have you ever considered running a class on how to edit content for CZcams?
Right now I barely have time to edit videos with my day job so maybe one day if I become a full time CZcamsr.
This is one of my fave things to do.
You forgot to tell them that if you flush tissue down the loo, they'll announce that you shouldn't. And thanks for using the Kenyan Benga music sound :D....similar to the SA one
Its for sure a great way to see Kenya! :)

Very true of the Mani's.Most other folks would be rushing to do videos on the desperately poor folks in the slum areas. Thanks for focussing on positive aspects.
