    The anglerfish's "fishing pole" grows out of the top of its head (it's a highly-modified dorsal fin ray). This means that the fish is swimming upside-down! I've seen this same behavior in other clips you have posted, so apparently this is normal behavior.

    • @FawningOverFauna
      @FawningOverFauna Před 6 měsíci +6

      It is normal behaviour, they swim upside down to face their lure downwards, hiding them from prey until the last moment

    Boston born, we lived right on the ocean, as a kid I'd watch horseshoe crabs come right up to my feet in shallow water, sometimes there'd be two attached to each other, it's crazy to think they've been around for 445 million years, they're also more related to spiders than to crabs.

      Fellow New Englander here: the local sea creatures of our region always filled me with wonder and fascination as a kid, especially those in Cape Cod...yes, horseshoe crabs are magnificent survivors :) I'll never forget the feeling of amazement I had from finding some for the first time as a kid. On another occasion, I caught a pipefish for the first time and thought I'd found a baby sea serpent😅 We're lucky to have such beautiful aquatic life here in New England

      JohnShields or DeepseaOddities.. Do the horseshoe crabs still come out to the shore? I'd imagine with increasing human population and visitations, they might shy away from such activity..🤔

      @@anthonychihuahua Yes, we have a good amount of these magnificent creatures in New England :) sadly, they are still frequently used as bait by fishermen and are also harvested by the medical industry due to their blood containing elements useful for medicine. I've been meaning to make a video on horseshoe crabs for some years now with original footage, similar to my old Low Tides video about crabs...I've filmed a few clips, but I'll need much more. Hopefully this spring I'll finally get around to it :)

    I love watching your videos they never cease to fascinate me but I have a question. Isn’t red the first color to get filtered out in the ocean so why do the headless chicken monsters always appear red?

    • @FawningOverFauna
      @FawningOverFauna Před 6 měsíci +6

      Red light does get absorbed first, some species have adapted to use red light as a lure because of this. The purpose of this particular sea cucumbers appearance is unknown but it may help them hide from others

    • @pimpozza
      @pimpozza Před 6 měsíci +3

      Red and black creatures predominate in the deep sea because red light can't reach such depths, as you rightly say, so these animals are actually pretty much camouflaged.. they simply blend in with the darkness.. It's all so fascinating how they generally follow pattern in their coloration depending on how far down they live.. Creatures that live near the surface tend to be more blue, for example.. 👍

    • @FawningOverFauna
      @FawningOverFauna Před 6 měsíci +4

      @pimpozza it's really cool. I'm pretty sure the only animals to use red as a lure instead of to hide are a few species of dragonfish and a species of siphonophore called erenna sirena its really cool to read abt

    Anyone know why the whipnose angler swims upside down?

    • @Saxman_sam
      @Saxman_sam Před 6 měsíci +1

      It’s possible (but not likely) that that specific specimen could have been dying. I have seen footage of other whipnose anglers and they all swim upright.

    • @FawningOverFauna
      @FawningOverFauna Před 6 měsíci +5

      Nah it's because they use their lure like a fishing line and by swimming upside down, they hide themselves as their lure can be seen from the seabed and once prey come over, they spring on them and eat them. It's part of their tactic

    • @pokeguy742
      @pokeguy742 Před 6 měsíci +6

      The going theory is that swimming upside down makes whipnose anglers "more lethal", although articles don't go into more detail than that. Seeing as they tend to drift just above the ocean floor, it's likely they go after larger, faster prey like squid and lobster. Dissection of a dead whipnose specimen revealed it had eaten an armhook squid, and squid are pretty fast relative to other benthic species.
      Personally, I think it's possible that by swimming upside down and targeting benthic species, paired with an unusually long lure, the whipnose can use its more muscular form to quickly snap at prey below it while minimizing risk of injury. Orienting itself upside down may also allow it to quickly make a follow-up attempt while it's target is attempting to retreat to a burrow or rock formation if the first is unsuccessful. That's all speculation, of course. There's very little information on these quirked up little whippits, so all we can do for now is guess.

    • @FawningOverFauna
      @FawningOverFauna Před 6 měsíci +6

      @pokeguy742 ok yeh wow there's a lot more there than I thought. I think the major reason they do this is because if they swim upright, then their lure would point up and not targeting their benthic dwelling prey. I have not read about them eating squid or a follow up attack but I believe you

    • @pimpozza
      @pimpozza Před 6 měsíci +3

      It's a fascinating subject! Researchers thought it was a one-off when they first saw an anglerfish swimming upside down but further examples have been recorded.. Hopefully the ROV will one day catch this fish in the act of hunting so we can learn more!🤞
