- KDP Select is an Amazon program for authors to sell their book exclusively with Amazon in exchange for some additional royalties and access to other programs. Do the benefits Amazon offers with KDP Select make it worthwhile for authors? Yes, I’ve managed to get a profile pic on my channel (same Andrew Hall) and have been doing daily videos on CZcams.
I’ve been binge watching your videos again because I have a publisher meeting on Thursday (I doubt I’ll take a deal, but it’s motivating for me to re-learn this stuff). But when I saw this title, I felt “I gotta watch this one” haha 😂!

Love your hoody swag! I’m considering this KDPSelect option for my second self-published book.
I suspect that loading the book to Amazon is no small feat.... I actually think I looked into it already and it requires special software...... editing and formatting aspects such as these are my nemesis 😔

PS the purpose of my writing is to support and attract clients, ($250-$600+ investment for them) it feels good to me to give my books away in effort to align myself with those who resonate with my content. I’m not just a writer, I’m a Life Coach. My other argument is; If my future memoir is going to be a big seller, people need to know who I am....right?

Wow. This is a good explanation of the publishing options. I didn't know about countdown deals and tiered pricing. I am a bargain shopper, but "free" can absolutely devalue items. There's an expression in the music profession that the only thing you get from doing a free gig is more free gigs. Thanks for the unexpected shout out!

With my first book I went with KDP select because at the time I was only on the KDP platform,. I was just starting out and learning how to publish on KDP was challenge enough. but now that I am slowly starting try other platforms I am going wide. In part because I agree with your point about not becoming to beholden to amazon. While they have done a lot for publishers, who knows what changes tomorrow might bring.

Dear Julie, thank you for helping me with this decision. Being my first book, non-fiction, after listening to your advice (as well as Dale's) I see KDP select is not for this book. Nowadays that I'm publishing this first book, I don't make a decision without checking with "what does Julie have to say about that" videos. Your advice is solid and trustworthy. I've read your book on Audible and keep running chapters 15 on till the end, now that I'm about to publish. I've taken copious notes and I'm just overall grateful you're around to guide us first time authors with your super-valuable tips. By the way, I did leave a raving review in the Audible page, and I'll be ordering the print version of your book where I'm sure I'll be writing notes. Thank you so much for existing and doing what you're doing. You absolutely rock!

KDP for me depends on what I'm doing. For nonfiction, it's a no. I've tried it and lost money. People seem to target the information they want and move on, leaving me with only a few pages read. For fiction, I'm all in. Fiction readers devour the whole book. Each download helps my BSR too.
I tried going wide with my fiction series, but it went over like a lead balloon. My genre, post-apocalyptic, doesn't do well outside the US. I get some Canadian sales, but not many. I wanted to get on Kobo to see if I could attract more Canadians, but nope. Didn't happen. So all those books are back in Kindle Select, except book 1. That's now a lead magnet.

I have tried both. Going wide and KDP select. I prefer KDP because it is easier to track and monitor . Changes are made quicker also. Thanks for the detailed insights for both sides.😉

Yea, I decided against KDP Select because I wanted to give my ebook away for free as a promo for those who pre-order a print copy. Can’t do that if I’m in Select. And I heard most KDP Unlimited subscribers are fiction readers. I decided it wasn’t worth it for me.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't getting a large number of downloads through KU ultimately result in more reviews-faster? It seems this is an important milestone and maybe a not so obvious benefit? Curious to see your response to this... Thanks!
Downloads don't become reviews automatically - someone has to read it and then choose to write a review. We see this a lot with people who give their book away for free to get reviews ... they can give hundreds away but it doesn't do THAT much to boost reviews unless you're really proactive in pursuing those reviews.
Tie the knot and amazon shouldn't be in the same sentence in my opinion lol!

I am researching a company that will print manuscripts for free when I get more information I'll let you know.
Hi, is it a good idea to print the cost of the book on the back of the book cover? For example: print $14.95 and sell it for $9.95
If you plan to sell your book in bookstores that is recommended. It's not something you have to do though and I'm not sure it has any benefit in the way you're suggestion (for a sales mark down)
