For all the faults of the prequel you have to admire its painstaking commitment to continuity
I watched the prequel once in theaters and NEVER watched it again. The cgi was so realistic to me, i.e. with Adam and Juliette getting fused with the alien. I was traumatized
The prequel had a lotta faults. How it ties into the original isn't one of them, though
It’s the best part of the prequel for me too.
It's a better prequel than the Alien ones.
The original crew should have known something was up when their assailent walked past them to keep perusing the dog. Unfortunantly, you're not going to notice details like that when a dude is shooting in your direction.

People who had watched 1982 leaves them unquestionable in the part where they go on the burned down station where all remains of The Thing there, its kindly faulty then they make a 2011 sequel just to connect it.
In Disney Pixar, Monster Inc. they make a sequel such as Monster University.

What about the game , where does that fit in ?
The game is a direct sequel to Carpenters The Thing. There’s a scene in the game where you find a frozen and dead Mac as well as his audio tapes. It’s a small part in the beginning, but a big deal was made that Carpenter was involved in the creation of the game. You would get other NPCs that would join you and gameplay affected how much you trusted each other and you could give blood tests to see who in your team was a Thing and who was human.
When I found the comics I enjoyed them more. The comic books are a direct sequel to Carpenters movie too. In the comics Windows calls for help were received and a rescue team was sent. The SEAL/a who rescue Mac believe he’s a mass murderer until they are attacked. There is much more to the comic books.
