    /* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down 2011s The Thing.
    -
I always found it kinda funny how we have a movie thats about an alien that perfectly mimics it's victims and we then got a movie that mimicked that beat for beat even down to having the exact same title. Saying that though I think this is a pretty fun prequel that ends in a way that makes you instantly want to put John Carpenters on.
Throughout this video we're gonna be breaking it down scene by scene and talking about all the hidden details and things you missed in it.
Now there were several Thing sequels and remakes almost put into production over the years but they all failed to make it past the screenwriting phase. We even almost got a sci-fi series called Return Of The Thing that would take place in a small american town after the events of the movie. We of course had the game which acted as a sequel and several dark horse comics that continued the tale.
John Carpenter actually pitched his own sequel with him setting it after the events of the first film. Both Childs and Macready looking older would be explained with Frostbite and we'd continue and see how the Thing tried to get to civilisation.

All of which is stuff which is inconsistently and transparently (in terms of agenda) enforced by the liberal fascists of You Tube. Russell Brand is demonized over whispers and finger pointing while Cardi B is still monetized after BRAGGING ABOUT drugging and robbing "clients" . Armchair Historian can't use the swastika symbol in a legitimate historical context while Infographics (foremost supporter of the Ukraine war and the military industrial legacy media complex) is totally allowed to use them. If you don't agree with my hate it's because you're objectively a tool/cuck of the State. Period. Disbelieve and defy woke women! Stand Up for your freedom or lose it.

I love both movies. The only thing I like more in the original is that the relationships amongst the team seemed so natural and established. It felt like these guys knew each other good and bad. Just by virtue of the lead and a couple of others being outsiders to the outpost in the sequel it meant we saw less of that. We saw a little with them drinking and singing along but it hadn’t built enough for me to then be really invested as each one died. The one relationship that I did love was the Lars and Kate. They didn’t speak the same language but found how to communicate and build trust in one another to understand both were going to give everything to stop it spreading. Which makes the opening act of the original more tragic.

The sequel sucked because it was unnecessary and stupid. The original is the best and it always will be. The lighting, the practical effects, the musical score, as well as the characters themselves made it a good movie. Cheesy? Yes, but still good.
These days, studios don’t know what they’re doing. Very rarely is there any kind of believable bond or relationship between characters these days….
It’s always so forced instead of being naturally written. Studios butcher everything these days, that’s an absolute fact.

@FigmentForever : The prequel was orders of magnitude better than Carpenter's film , for my money . Reading posts of adherents to Carpenter's version shows that a lot of people like a lot of ' bells and whistles ' going off . Me , I wanted to see a serious horror picture on this story that would transport me to that place with those people . And the cast of the prequel were great . But unfortunately there was more concern for budget issues than there was to make a real cult shocker of a horror film that would be way too disturbing to bring the kiddies to see . The movie should have been at least 40 minutes longer . I would have cut out that opening scene with the snow cat falling through the ice , and the scene showing Kate plying her trade as a paleontologist working on that frozen dog . The ship would remain mysterious , with nobody entering it , as with the visitor - the only knowledge that those poor people acquire about it after discovering that it is alive is that it wants to kill them all , and even more terrifying , that it can replicate them after attacking , killing , and consuming them . One more change - I think the film would have been much more interesting , more haunting , if BOTH Kate AND Carter were allowed to survive . Let them be rescued by maybe the Russians , and then the story starts there , with Kate and Carter faced with the hopeless task of making somebody believe them .

@edathompson2 : The space ship should have been a complete mystery , with no humans ever entering it . We get to see only the outside , a sight which would instill awe , along with foreboding . But Kate and Carter should never have entered it . Instead , perhaps they could decommission it by tossing as many of those thermite bombs into as many hatch openings that they could find . In a previous post I thought that BOTH Kate AND Carter should have survived , and also that the film should have been made at least 40 minutes longer .

Is it possible that the thing acts differently in this one because it hasn’t learned the behavior of being more stealthy yet? I know it understands peoples memories, but what if none of those people were good at strategizing how to blend in? Would love to see this take place in a populated urban setting.. what do you do ? When the entire city could be infected? From Grasshoppers , to house cats , to your very own grandmother?? The possibilities are endless .
6:39 Sunshine is such an underrated gem..
17:24 That is such an interesting take on it.. I never looked at it that way.. She does look like she's not capable of controlling her actions.. almost if as she's begging to die..
The actor who plays Norris in the original 82 film.. stated in the behind the scenes commentary, that in some ways after he turned down Gary's offer , to take over the camp.. He stated that he believed he knew he was the thing, or at the very least infected.. but his human side was still somewhat in control of his actions..
A very interesting take on it indeed 👍..
These Easter eggs that you've spotted out are very unique from what I've seen on CZcams lately.. You did an incredible job.. You pleasantly surprised me that's for sure..
20:03 Well the thing is.. oh shit... 😂.. no pun..
Edvard goes along with it , because he knows the flamethrowers are ready . There's no escape , if it we're to be discovered.. so he just plays it cool.. For his or it's own survival... for now.. but when it loses consciousness.. The wiring is crossed , sort of speak.. Mabye it thought it was being dragged to it's death? Or the shock of the explosion brought forth the mutation.. it's kinda hard decipher what actually brought on the mutation.. but it was indeed the best scene in the film.. Showing you how the split face creature came to be..
23:54 The Mac call back for sure , but remember the blood moved on it's own across the floor during the Palmer mutation.. So you gotta ask yourself, would you really touch that axe 🪓??
25:56 That scene in particular reminds me of Nauls in the 82 version.. When he heard or noticed something in the generator room.. Except Carter actually comes back to save Kate.. Nauls just kinda disappears from sight.. Never to return.. It was very creepy.. Before you knew it, Mac was all alone down there..
" How's it coming in there? I said how's it..."
    Soo good !!!
29:11 I tip my hat to the Director sincerely, you could really tell he adored Carpenter's film .. Honestly , I think he did a fantastic job. Even with the studio interferences. I just hate ADI studios didn't get a chance to show off thier Hardwork , with the practical creature effects they created..

If it serves one thing's plan of survival, it may throw another thing under the bus. I think Palmer, like Bennings, is controlled by the thing from the very moment of assimilation onward. You can argue a gradual assimilation through infection took place in Norris' case, but not Palmer. In the scene where they keep MacReady outside, Palmer is actively creating distrust against Mac, furthering the paranoia among the men.

2011 The Thing is a very interesting prequel. Every now and then, I still find myself thinking about it and getting the urge to rewatch it. It obviously has its problems, but the connective tissue and tensions scenes still provide enough intrigue. Not to mention how they alter and flip scenes keeps it feeling mostly like it’s own. I think it is a good companion film for the first. The idea to have this lead comes across the leads of the original actually sounds like a very interesting idea. I would love to see Kurt Russell, especially, return to this franchise that boosted him so long ago. I feel like that could end The Thing as a neat little trilogy while providing a definitive ending to the alien and these characters. Personally, it isn’t the ending of the first that keeps me intrigued, so I would be fine if they eliminated that ambiguous ending for a more definitive one.

I could be wrong, but I think you missed a tiny detail that completely changes the ending.
In the filme, there are at least 2 scenes, in which the disguised 'Thing' displayed a strange reaction to the cars windshields movements.
It was very brief, but the disguised 'Thing' had rapid eye movements, following the windshields with an almost predatory fixed gaze.
And in the very last shot of the filme, Katie dose the exact same thing with her eyes, as she look at the windshields, right befor she drives away.
Given the director confirmed that Katie didn't survive, I tend to believe that she was in fact the 'Thing', and was simply unaware of it.
Perhaps the ultimate trick used by the 'Thing' was to disguise itself as the very enemy that was hunting him, the heroine.

Where you mention tension build up and then nothing happens, I actually like this approach. Films can become too predictable, where you can almost count into the scare from the build up. Having these moments when nothing comes of it creates both feelings of prolonged tension and a false safety, so when the scare does come you're less prepared and the reaction is stronger. This is something the Japanese and Korean horror makers use to better effect.

The blood starts to boil up and the guy starts morphing and screeching. The audience gets a jump scare while they think they’re experiencing tension buildup.

The troubling issue - if Sam is not the Thing at the end - Cate acted impulsively and murdered him. Of course, she has good reason to expect that he is the Thing - he "lost" the earring because, apparently as the alien, he could not duplicate it.
But what if there *is* another explanation of why Sam doesn't have the ring any more? He piteously begs of Cate, "Let me explain!" I would love to hear his explanation!
He's also being too hesitant to absorb or kill Cate - *if* he's the Thing. He walks out of the alien ship with her, agrees with her that they should escape in the snow cat, and even when she explains to him why she's sure he's the Thing, he doesn't attack her so as to get her out of the way and eliminate her potential future testimony. Cate doesn't give him time to "explain" much of anything before she fries him. ("Which makes her a murderer, don't it?")
As the review says, we don't know if Cate survives and if, or how, she makes it to the Russian camp. The film ends with Sam's - or the Thing's - blood on her hands, sitting behind the controls of the snow cat. We need to know what happens to her, and we ought to be able to figure out with some certainty if Sam was really the Thing. As it stands, therefore, the ending is really not data-heavy enough to be seen as some artistic nihilistic final statement or disclosure. It needs a bit of tweaking to permit the viewer to have minimal confidence about Sam's final identity and Cate's fate.

The fact the Thing was aggressive in the prequel and showed more stealth and discretion in the originals shows how it was learning about humanity who themselves is a predatory species much like the Thing thus very dangerous. This is why by the end of the original film the last Thing (assuming one of the remaining characters was the thing) respected its adversary as an equal and not simply a prey item and likely felt better to die with a adversary rather than alone. There was a fan fic one time that apparently presented the thing as not a villian but as simply a survivor who was abducted by the alien ship and was horrified of its situation when it found itself on earth. Each human being essentially being so alien to the thing it terrified it but also began learning about humanity each time it assimated them.

I still prefer the original because it somehow has more tension in it. However, I think they did a great job in making a Thing movie that was not just a remake. I learned of the whole E.T. debacle that made The Thing flop back then, but I'm actually surprised that this one flopped too as later on The Thing was recognized as a great movie. You'd think that therefore something connected to it, would do well. Kate in the prequel had more plot armor than three typical horror movie protagonists put together. the Things constantly forgot about abilities it had used before whenever it faced her, and repeatedly decided to scream before attacking her from behind when it would not do so with other victims. It also seemed drastically less accurate when facing her over other humans.
    Also.
imagine deciding to condemn a person to a fiery death based entirely on one's own memory of the placement of a earring under highly stressful conditions. Not" Hey, I think the earring was in this ear, but he grabbed at the other ear, I'll keep an eye on him, or use other tests to prove my suspicions to be correct or not." but full blown" I know, know, know that I'm right about the earring position, soooooo much, that I will immediately torch the guy . No further evidence needed..."

I enjoy watching this and the John Carpenter film. The major CGI scene that I hated was the helicopter scene. The movie was very good imo and I still don't understand why it didn't do well! Come to think of it, I also don't understand why the original bombed😢
I think I will do a The Thing movie marathon this Friday!

    • @FaceFamous
      @FaceFamous Před 7 měsíci

The original bombed because people didn't understand horror back then and what John Carpenter was doing. After horror became more mainstream. And a re evaluation. It's now considered one of the greatest horror movies ever made. So it had its redemption arch

I had so many problems with this film, not just the CGI. I don't understand why they couldn't make the whole cast Norwegian, that would make a bit more sense and I just really, really disliked how it TRIED to be exactly like John Carpenter's film, but failed miserably. If you like it, that's your opinion, but I personally didn't.

Universal were never gonna do an all Norwegian cast tbh. Kinda wish we'd just got a lower budget one filmed by Norweigans.

The only reason I can come up with for the difference in the way the creature acts in each film is that it realized how dangerous humans are during its first encounter with them, as it almost resulted in its destruction, and decided to be less aggressive at Outpost 31.

    I know I'd watch it.

I always thought that the ending would punch the viewer in the gut a lot more if he was _not_ an alien. If Kate burned him alive, and only when it would be way too late to save him/put the fire away - realized, that it was really Carter, and not a Thing. That she allowed paranoia to get better of her, and killed a good man, a friend, and basically left herself to die in snow bc of the destruction of their car.
Like sheesh, it would be so great!

As far as I can recall this is the only pre-qual movie done right. No weird political bias or ideological message. Just straight to the point and a rather seamless transition from the ending to the original movies opening. Hell the movie gave me a similar feeling of ever present dread that the first Alien movie did.

Loved the video. I noticed this when I watched the film in the cinema back in 2011. At 8.38 in your video I think the film pays homage to the The Alien xenomorph creature. In my opinion there is a head of The Alien cut into the ice just off centre to the lower left of the screen

As a fan who has that original as the #2 on my all time favorites and waited YEARS for this sequel, it is an absolute shame the studio stepped in to cut the practical effects when so much of the film is so great.
PAUL! For Halloween, maybe a breakdown of the HIGHLY underrated 1996 comedy horror with Michael J. Fox, Jeffrey Combs & Jake Busey, “The Frighteners”?

I watched both back to back for the first time just last week. I realized I missed out on such an amazing film.
Anyways, the things I loved about the "original" were the special effects, atmosphere, the "old look", and lack of CGI. I'm someone who enjoys CGI, but watching a movie that seems like it used puppets/animatronics made it feel so realistic and grotesque.
I liked the rigid movements, physical parts coming out of the creature, etc. The old look of the movie made it look more creepy and lonely. You can feel the tension between the characters. The look of the film felt more immersive. As if i could tell what time it took place. With the prequel, the film looked more modern and I had to continuously remind myself that they can't just pull out a smartphone and dial for help (that might be due to the fact that i know it was a 2011 movie).
The creature in the prequel seemed like "the big bad guy", someone they had to have a showdown with. It felt less realistic in universe. In the "original" it just seemed like they had to survive the night and their only option was to die with it even though that was the plan in both movies.
I did enjoy both and I loved the callbacks.

This myth that it doesn’t know it’s a Thing is annoying. Edvard manipulated the group in this film, and in the 1982 original* Palmer’s body language and facial expressions during the blood test scene reveal not only that he is The Thing but knows full well that he is.
