- What's all the high pivot hype about? I take a dive into my new bike the Deviate Claymore and tell you everything. The good, the bad, the ugly. Is it high pivot heaven? Or just Hype? My claymore arrives in 1 week! So excited to try it out with DVO and hope bits. You can do custom builds through Deviate. They will direct to consumer as well! I live in the east coast US and the custom build I made is being shipped from the HQ Edinburgh Scotland.
Also the bike builder on the custom page will generate an image to show the bike with the selected components, super nice touch 🤙
For what its worth. I rode this bike and it also blew my mind how good it was.

I am kind of tired of the chatter from my Bronson's VPP and want something that eats up chatter and bumps a bit better.

Question on the suspension settings, are those clicks from closed or open? Did you ever find the 38 to be too stiff for your weight? The only other time I've ridden a Fox 38 was on a demo bike and I probably didn't have it set up right but it was pretty wrist punishing.
I have a similar build spec coming, Fox Factory X2 and 38 with XT drivetrain, Raceface Era cranks, TRP DH-R Evos, and Raceface alloy wheels.

Loving the bike so far! I picked up a Rockshox SDLX Ultimate coil (testing 450 and 400 lb springs) on sale and threw it on, I was having a hard time figuring out the Float X2 and accidentally had all of your suspension settings backwards so it was super harsh. I'll do some back to back testing with both now that I have them.
@whitest_kyle haha yeah once you get the setting dialed it rides like a dream... I would like to try a coil soon but loving it with air I'm not sure I'd see much of an improvement
Update - Deviate now sell full 'pro' build bikes on their website, as well as a fully customised bike builder which lets you choose everything!
Hi Jonathon. Fantastic video! In your settings that you put on the screen at the end of your video, the high speed and low speed rebound on your Fox 38 fork are 11 and 13, respectively. Are those typos? I have a 2023 claymore with the same fork and it has 9 clicks of each. I want to set up my suspension like you have yours set up (soft/fast) so if the HSR and LSR posted on your video are typos, I’d love to get your actual settings.
I loved your video by the way. I’m loving my Claymore but still dialing in my suspension. I was pumped to see this video, as I ride a lot of different terrain like you (flowy jump trials to double black) and have been searching for some guidance on a good overall suspension setup for this bike.

Those are my actual settings. I set the fork up a little faster than I normally would but after alot of testing it feels good. I started with the baseline settings on both rear shock and fork and did a TON of testing and the base settings were so far off it made the bike feel horrible. Too slow, harsh etc. I think the only thing I've changed since this video is when riding big lines with G-outs and big hucks I go back in a click on the high speed compression on the shock for a little better bottom out, or, I might try another token in the rear shock. This bike acts so much different and I've never had to put in a spacer in an X2 before but I feel it may be warrented the way this bike likes to have the suspension soft and fast off the top.

In the review of loam wolf they were speaking about brake jack (hardening of the rear suspension under braking) with the Claymore. Do you have the same sensation? I would probably change from a Firebird 22 to a Claymore but after the loam wolf review I was hesitant.
I've had quite a bit of time to dial in my deviate. I think the loam wolf didn't take the time to properly set up his suspension . It takes a little while to really get it right ... but once I have it set up right no I don't notice it anymore than any other bike and I'm PRing trails I've ridden 100 times lol

I have a Claymore also and am liking it more and more. A couple questions:
-Do you ever get chain skipping teeth when pedaling hard? I find it's happening when the suspension is squatting (high speed, sweeping berm..pedaling to make a jump) and I'll get some skipping. I'm running a 12 speed Shimano XT drivetrain which is supposed to have lots of tension but still getting the skipping on occasion. Thinking about trying Deviate's just released chain tensioner.
-How many Volume spacers are you running on the X2? I found with my riding style 2 volume spacers in the x2 was perfect and took away some of the soft, wallowing. I like a firmer platform and ride a lot of bike park so that helped.
Otherwise the bike is rad and just as cornerable/playful as my 27.5 Evil Insurgent it replaced once I got used to it...while being much much faster. Also setting PR's on pretty much every trail I ride without trying.
-I am not getting any skipping. I'd check chain/front chainring compatibility first as not all chainrings will work with both shimano and sram alot of time they need to be specific. If you notice on my build I used an E-thirtheen lower bash and guide, I did have to shave a little of the plastic off to get it to clear the downtube protector but otherwise it's been flawless. I wouldn't hesitate to buy the one deviate makes as everything I've got from them so far is top notch... highly recommend their grease gun... was blown away the linkage has like 7 grease ports to keep things fresh.
-I am running the stock amount of volume spacers in my X2 not sure how many that is? I'm only 160 lbs and it feels pretty dang good I might try adding one as it does feel pretty soft....
Interested to see if that low bottom pivot gets mess up with all the slab/rock features you ride.
I mean I think it's safe to say it'll get a little scraped but... I've never damaged a frame in that area at all so I'm guessing it'll mostly be intermittent slow speed scraps that just so happen to miss the taco guard
Hi, how tall are you and what frame size did you test? I'm 179cm and reach 490cm for L, it seems quite a lot to me and I'm afraid that the bike won't be too clumsy in corners, etc.
I'm 5'9" with a 5'10" wingspan so long arms and I'm riding a size medium that has a 460 reach with a 40mm stem. I could even get away with a 32mm stem and be comfortable
Where is this trail system that you rode? Highland?

been using claymore for 7 months and it indeed feels like the back is 50kg. Soo hard to move around, takes all energy to take off the ground. It's like a dh bike to just go straight down
I mean a little more than some other bikes but... mine all built up with pedals is about 35 lbs. Which is alot lighter than some other bikes coming out like the slash. I find once you get used to where the weight is on the bike it's pretty great. There is a definite learning curve though

Pretty on par with most brands cost wise though no? I'm so impressed with the engineering in this frame the more I maintain it. Every bearing is greasible and they claim 2 years between needing any major service. I had 5 out of 12 bearings seized on my trek after the first year
@@Projectnortheast it's about 20+% more expensive to ship to EU countries because of post-Brexit regulations. I do like the bike though and heard others say similar things about it to what you said. The 20% hurts though

Bruh come to find you invested so much into this custom build then compare it to a off the shelf Slash. Like I said before it's your opinion at the end but it isn't a fair comparison and the bias is heavy.
Deviate doesn't offer OE builds... (until just recently with their pro builds) and I'm lucky I can grab just about any bike I want and the slash is the first new Trek mtb I'm not interested in having in my stable. But you keep on hatin brother that's what the internet is good for...
@@Projectnortheast I'm being objective. Call it hating if you want but the comparisons you're making and the way you make it you're headed in the direction of Linus Tech Tips downfall before you get off the ground.

@alexh.4068 the thing your missing is your opinion doesn't matter. I make the videos I want and compare the bikes I'm most interested in riding period. Trek made a high pivot bike and hyped it up, so I compared it directly to one of the most hyped high pivot brands out there. I chose to build up a Claymore based on other reviews. I build bikes, ride, review, and keep the ones that blow me away and ditch the ones that fall short. Simple as that. My only aim in comparing the slash to the deviate was the high pivot design which in all aspects the deviate rode better
@@Projectnortheast Lol you're so gotten to and taking my thoughts as a personal attack. You're lashing out in anger! The logical connection and bias in your comparisons definitely reflects this character as well. Bottom line is your comparison has so many holes in it and I pointed it out. Have a good one.
