I don’t think you need to worry about anyone losing interest or whatever. As gardeners, we love to see fully developed mature spaces, but the making of a garden is magical. We dream all winter of how the coming spring will be. So, we all are in a constant state of hope and change. I can’t wait to see your space this year and in years to come.

Excellent video! Thank you for sharing your story. At our previous home we had created a magical garden full of perennials and shrubs and the most beautiful playhouse for our daughter. I remember when we sold it I told the new homeowner to wait until Spring to see what popped up before making a decision to remove anything. That was in 2003. Last time I drove by that house it looked like everything was still there, including the beautiful playhouse. It made my heart happy. ❤
I've been in my forever home for 22 years. I've built my garden from scratch like you did and when I am gone, I told my son that if he sold it to someone who was not a gardener that I would come back to haunt him the rest of his life. LOL But it is nice to be able to breathe where you want to live!

Matthew, I really enjoy your CZcams teachings, and listening to you talk. I have been married 36 years, we live in Michigan. And I have been gardening at our 1.25 acre property for the 22 years we have been here. I pick up what I can on the cheep because I really have limited funds, but someday would love to do drip irrigation ( that I know absolutely nothing about) and buy lots of plants. I have mostly perennials right now. We built a greenhouse two yrs ago, so starting anything I can with seeds. I just want you to know listening to you, Jessica, Laura, Robbie, has made me feel I have some friends, which here I have none (except my husband of course). Matthew, thanks for sharing your personal story. I started out in academia (art history) and went to law school as a mom with young kids. Spent my legal career in NYC big law (corporate)-- you made the right decision to go in-house! I used to garden on a city terrace and my husband installed some floodlights so that I could work out there when I came home at 10 pm. In retirement I bought a property in the country so I could dig in the actual ground. I really enjoy seeing what you are doing in your garden -- you are a natural teacher. My dad was born in Middletown and I used to love visiting my grandparents in Ohio.
How you managed to have any energy after coming home at 10pm to garden is incredible and dedication!

It’s nice to hear your story. Makes it more personal knowing who you are. I came across your channel a few months ago at the perfect time. I’ve spent the fall and winter revamping my garden. Pulling out everything that was old or I didn’t like and concentrating on the layout and adding beds and walkways etc. Almost a clean slate. I actually like the clean look. Watching you start building your new garden has given me the confidence and inspiration to do the same. I’m so excited for this spring. I so hope your channel continues to grow!

Your so informative and interesting. My love for gardening comes from my grandfather who had a very productive vegetable garden and a enviable rose garden. I loved your last garden but I was excited when you said you were moving to a large property and starting new beds because I was in the exact same position! As a relatively new gardener it has been such a help watching you plan and start new beds from scratch.
I too am like you, always prefer to buy quality items, saves money over the long haul, I once went into a hardware store and said ‘I don’t care if it costs $100.00 please show me a lawn sprinkler that will last more than 2 years’!! That was 20 years ago!!

Hi Matthew...I'm from south Louisiana and I'm really getting into gardening now at 63 !! I loved this video...my son currently lives in Dayton. He has his PhD in Toxicology, he says he went to school half of his life !! He moved to Ohio in 2016 for his job . We visit him at least twice a year , I love it there and plan to move there with him when I'm really old !! Lol . Enjoy your videos. I Found you when you first moved to the 5 acre home. I just retired and am enjoying gardening on my 5 acres I have had for 20 years. Our property is a horse property we built but now that the horses have passed my attention is beautifying our property. Love that you are starting a new property so I can learn from you. I really appreciate you sharing your story. I think, I found your channel in 2021 after watching Jess. Lol, finding ways to cope with pests in the garden. I got the garden bug then bc we were moving to a house with many gardens around the house course they were filled with big Arizona granite rocks, had to pull them all out and landscape fabric. I fell in love with your gardens, it was so my style. I’m super introverted and shy also. I have a hard time when neighbors come by to chit chat lol. I missed seeing your gorgeous garden when you moved too. But so excited to see your design and beautiful gardens growing. So happy i found you Matthew. ❤😊

Gardens change over years. At 76 with arthritis, i live in a retirement village in South Carolina. My first ever HOA, but I’m navigating it. I can hire assistance for heavy work (lower backs are badly engineered) so I am happy to have a gym and physical therapy on campus. The biggest cost has been compost for clay soil, which you’ve talked about, but it’s better than the soil in central Texas. Whatever the challenges, I will be a gardener, especially since my new house has a wonderful sunroom! Looking forward to seeing your new garden develop.

I love your channel and have learned a lot in the different plants you are using.
You had some design elements in the old home that I’ve started to imitate in m😅y own yard. And when you announced you was leaving that garden I couldn’t believe it! But seeing the space you have it was my opportunity to begin with you at the beginning and learn from your skill and design. Both a small and a large garden is an educational opportunity as far as design goes. And it’s immediately obvious you are a natural educator.
I didn’t know you were a “we”! Love your videos. My dad was from Ohio and loved it there. I lived in Alabama”roll tide” and loved it there. Learning ALOT from your videos and your voice is so soothing. By the way, your place is gorgeous, and I also don’t like subdivisions. I also live in the country. Good Luck with your garden.

This was great getting to know you a bit more, Matthew. The first time I saw you either you were visiting Jess, or vice-versa. It will be nice watching this garden grow from scratch because that's what I've been doing for the last 6 years. I'm in my 60s but this is my first house, also in the country, just an acre but surrounded by farms, but a total blank slate. That's a lot of decision making. I'm trying to shift to more shrubs and perrenials just like you seem to be doing in the front area. Easier, maybe, for us with back issues, right?

Another introvert here, loving my husband and two dogs and now my love for gardening, especially since moving into our 1908 house here in NH in 2016.
