The year is 872, and many of the separate kingdoms of what we now know as England have fallen to the invading Danes, leaving the great kingdom of Wessex standing alone and defiant under the command of King Alfred.
Against this turbulent backdrop lives our hero, Uhtred. Born the son of a Saxon nobleman, he is captured by the Danes and raised as one of their own. Forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing, his loyalties are ever tested.
What is he? Saxon or Dane?
On a quest to reclaim his birthright, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path between both sides if he is to play his part in the birth of a new nation and, ultimately, recapture his ancestral lands.
Directed by: Nick Murphy, Anthony Byrne, Ben Chanan, Peter Hoar
Written by: Stephen Butchard, based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories
Cast: Alexander Dreymon, David Dawson, Jason Flemyng and Matthew Macfadyen

I've read all the books - several times - but that hasn't spoiled my enjoyment of the TV series. I m well into Season 4 now and it just keeps getting better.
I wonder if one day any TV company will make a series based on Bernard's Grail Quest novels. If anything they are even better than Last Kingdom.

Bernard, I love your books, all of them, so much that the video already exists in my head from Stonehenge onward. Nothing that was a casualty of modern cinema (DAMM enjoyable!) could detract from what is on my book shelf. Sharpe, Starbuck, Redcoats loose in the Colonies, Its all the best. Cheers from Chesapeake Bay.

I am enjoying the series so far, but it was a little disappointing not to getting why Bebbanburg was really, really important at the time! A bit strange to see Uthred grow up in the first episode as well, but it is a tv-series I hope you are doing everything to stay a bit true to the books! :)

TV version is nothing like the books, if i hadn't read the books id probably enjoy tv show, but its hard to enjoy something when characters and events are totally left out or altered so much its actually confusing! Ok uhtred has dark hair instead of blonde - no prbs wi that! But fighting Leofric to the death! When in the book he fights a massive warrior called Steapa (oddas minder) so its fitting & would be 'to the death' , but uhtred v Leofric!? Not just pals but quite evenly matched! Whereas Steapa would've killed uhtred- but vikings attack breaking up the fight (why that was changed baffles me,) that isn't leaving stuff out - thats adding stuff that's wrong! Why not leave it as it was in book, it wd take same amount of time , so its pointless, Also unnecessary- changing way Uhtred beats Ubba, in book he slips on someones guts making it believable a 20yr old beats a seasoned viking warlord! But no, tv changes it to uhtred beating ubba thru skill!! Unrealistic & pointless change. So many pointless changes. (Not leaving stuff out! But changing!! Read the books peeps they are excellent.

It takes out the best of Vikings and Game of Thrones.

beside some problems in the clothes deparment (really, leather armour in a viking, and whats up with that weird dane helmets, real "viking" helmets are waaay cooler and good looking that that thing) this series is brilliant, the cinematography is excelent, the acting quite good and the unexpected humor is really funny, Im quite hype for the second season

    • @manchestertart5614
      @manchestertart5614 Před 5 lety

Late, I know but I just wanted to share a thought with you.
In a Cadfael story, something similar happened with there being a large jewel on the end of a sword that was also a family heirloom .
So maybe it is not such an unusual thing to do.?
I expect that the author's will have done a lot of research in to this, before committing it to paper, and I accept their superior knowledge.
Uhtred has to be very agile so that is one reason for having the sword across his back maybe it is a thing that Uhtred's had made specially for himself.
I'm suspending my disbelief and just enjoying the show.

Living vicariously through your hero means that, among other things, he gets all the women all of the time and no other appealing male characters' storyline is ever fully developed because they might overshadow Uhtred. There was something extremely old-fashioned about all of this... I was thankful the series updated some of these problematic aspects a little, though the story remains too Uhtred-centric for my liking - one of its only major flaws, IMO... but it's a matter of subjective preference when it comes to narrative choices and this is simply my personal opinion on the matter.

+frank slater You're such a SHEEP. In 1815, Nathan Rothschild stated: "I care not what puppet is placed upon the throne of England to rule the Empire on which the sun never sets. The man who controls the British money supply controls the British Empire, and I control the British money supply. "I'm NOT a "conspiratorially minded" and all you idiot. I'm stating what truly happened in history. The world is not this multi-faceted, multi-layered intricate place; It's that simple: ; If you control the money issuance of nations you control it , history is written by the winners. STOP BEING A SHEEPLE AND WAKE UP MORON.
