You weren't dorky at all! Merely charming and beguiling!
+Bernard Cornwell Thank you terribly Mr Cornwell! Honour to interview you.
omg how adorable is this girl !!
I LOVED this video! you were so sweet and I feel like the questions and answers were really interesting&personal! it felt all very natual! and he had a very charming and kind aura to him as well!
I was cringing in my editing at how dorky I sounded in comparison to his amazing voice haha! He was genuinely one of the nicest and most interesting people I've ever met! Oh to conduct myself as Bernard; one day! But thank you so much Emy xxx
Antastesia
Your enthusiasm is infectious, as always Choncey :) Now I want to read his books!
Man I'd give anything to talk history with him.
I LOVED "The Last Kingdom" tv series! I was hoping a movie series or something would manifest from "The Winter King" trilogy. That was my introduction to Bernard Cornwell, and I read them frequently.
Such a humble guy! I appreciate his explanation of being "hands off" in the series. "These people know what they are doing and I don't!" - Such an honest and humble way to approach it!
What a charming interview.
The joy is just radiating from you, please do more interviews Choncey.
This is a wonderfully conducted interview! He seems so warm and welcoming too! I am really looking forward to the television series, it looks fantastic.
Thank you so much Harry! The trailer looks awesome I'm so excited for it! He was genuinely the nicest and most interesting person! It made me love the books more after meeting him!
+C. A. DuBois (The Petite Britette) I'll second Harry, wonderful inteview. I enjoyed the dramatisation, I have not read the books yet but I will. Loved the Sharpe stories and the Warlord Chronicles. Really wish they'd do the the latter as a dramatisation.
Season 2 will be great too
That would be the coolest interview to do. So thrilled that you were able to do this. While I've only read a small handful of Bernard Cornwell I've been very impressed by his writing voice and narratives. The fact they interweave with history is even better.
Bernard is at his core a charmingly humble person, and that is one big thing that makes him so special.
Such a well done interview!! I loved watching this and after years of watching my father read his books I've only just begun reading Bernard Cornwell books. I do love your videos Choncy :)
A fantastic interview! Thank you for posting:) very jealous you got to speak to the man himself! Such a fantastic series of books and the TV series has really done them justice.
Love love love!! You did awesomely! I watched the first episode last night and I'm already gripped, now I can't wait to read his writing!
Well done for this interview! You're so genuine and enthusiastic :) Very nicely conducted.
Seeing two of my favourite people together, what a nice evening! ♡
You did wonderfully: interesting discussions, a personal touch in the questions, a natural atmosphere. Well done! :)
I'm one minute in and I already want to like this video more than once!
you look SO EXCITED! I'm just so happy for you!
ok. back to the video now.
I`ve read all of his works and wait for the next book. Very nice interview, relaxed and informative.
Fantastic video! I'm so jealous that you got to meet Bernard Cornwell. Such a great interview :)
Great interview- really looking forward to the television series now :)
Awesome job and interview! Don't apologize for being nervous! I can imagine how you felt being next to a literary collossus as big as Cornwell....HE IS one of the MOST talented writers of the historical fiction genre, no question.
what a great interview
absolutely engaging interview! superb!
This was a very enjoyable interview :)
I adored this! You did a lovely job! Seems like you had a really great time. I'm definitely more interested in reading his books now. He seems like a wonderful character. It was also great to see your enthusiasm. You looked genuinely engrossed in the conversation. And he seemed to enjoy your love and interest in not just his works but more importantly in the time period and historical fiction. :D
Amazing at the end there, I was sitting on the end of my seat giggling because I was so excited. Damn, I guess I'm a Bernard Cornwell fanboi..
What an wonderful interview. Intelligent questions and intelligent answers. It is so refreshing to see such an open, honest and friendly interview with such great affinity between interviewer and interviewee. We are so looking forward to reading the book and seeing the drama. Well done Choncey and Bernard Cornwall and much success to you both in the future.
Wow, this was very interesting Choncey! I especially liked the part about flipping the big sfory into a little story! Very interesting interview!
Thank you Sahara! xxx
fantastic video. I can't wait to see this programme.
Thank you xxx
bloody brilliant interview choncey.
Thank you Nazzums xxx
wonderful interview..well done!
How can you not love this guy? I'm an American who, in the mid 80s (I think--it's been many decades since I first learned of him) I read a book review on Sharpe's Siege. At the time it was the 8th book in the series (I remember that distinctly because of what I will reveal later in this comment). The reviewer was so impressed with the novel, he went beyond the norm and talked about the entire series to that point. I've always been a reader, always having a love of history.
I had never read anything having to do with British history (outside of the American Revolution and War of 1812), but was so taken in by the reviewer's effusive explanation and remarks on the book, I decided to buy a copy. It gave me pause, though. Not having much money at all during that time, I had to decide whether to start at the beginning of the series (seven books earlier) to get the story from the beginning, or to start with Shape's Siege to determine whether the extra money would be worth it to start from the beginning. After a bit of thought, I rolled the dice. I was drawn to the subject matter (Napoleonic Wars from the British point of view) to the degree that I bought the first 3 books of the series and prayed I would like it.
I went beyond liking it. It is, to this day, the best fictional series I've ever read. I am a lifetime Bernard Cormwell fan. Great interview.
Way to go, Choncey! You were fantastic! Congratulations!
Ahh bless you thank you! I was so nervous throughout haha
Well I must say what a surprise to speak to Bernard Cornwell, I have read the Last Kingdom books, along with his Arturian series, it must have been a dream come true to talk to him.
This is a much better show than Vikings, Beowulf or even GOT. Very believable characters and intelligent writing.
Exactly! Cos this is the REAL game of thrones and in the end emerge the throne of England (or Englaland: )
Better than Got - nope
@@irishfruitandberries9059 GOT sucked.
@@amaxamon my apologies. I misread. I thought you were referring to the books. The show, however, I completely agree!
@@irishfruitandberries9059 I don't think the books are very good either! But I would not say they "suck" - the series was one of the most overblown, overhyped, trashy soap operas of all time and I doubt anyone will much care about it in the future, as with most TV shows.
your best video yet!
Love his books. Am re reading them during the lockdown . Just read azingcourt and halfway through harlequin. Even better second time around.
what a lovely video :) I thoroughly enjoyed it x
Passionate, emotive, beautiful, knows to listen, shows true interest in the subject, what more? Talking about mademoiselle over there. Congrats. And no, I don't forget about mr. Cornwell! History is a passion of mine, and his writing is top-notch. I'm still "travelling" with Thomas of Hookton for now, but can't wait to jump into The Last Kingdom!
I'm currently taking a historical fiction writing class in my second year of university, and I find this so interesting. I loved how he put storytelling will keep you awake, old historical non fiction books cannot. Very true. And the part about the foreground and background story. Wonderful.
I'm glad this video reached someone who was interested in writing historical fiction nausea I though Bernard really shed insight into the writing process as, obviously, it's a very different method of writing. I wish I had a historical fiction class near me to attend XD
Fantastic interview with the great man himself :)
Your voice is so pleasant to hear!❤
Oh wow Choncey, this was an amazing interview! Good job! I don't think you sounded dorky at all. But you are right, his voice is quite nice :)
Now that's a true fan! Cheers!
I will be honest not much of a book reader but the TV series is impressive and amazing to watch. I even got my coworkers hooked on it. We cannot wait until the next episode. Well done Mr. Cornwell.
Great interview - he gave great answers but you did te right amount of prodding and your enthusiasm really helped! Just took out The Last Kingdom from my library today because I've always heard about but it's been quite far down on my list since I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction. (I appreciate it but don't particularly enjoy reading it) The TV adaptation gave me an excuse but Bernard seemed so lovely and you clearly love it that now I can't wait to start reading it!
In terms of why historical authors don't write non-fiction, Jane Smiley wrote a terrific Guardian article called 'History v historical fiction' about the similar skills but, like Bernard, emphasises her desire to tell stories.
I’m really enjoying this show. I may go pick up the books.
Brilliant writer ! Great interview too. Thanks
Thanks for watching (:
Well done that was a really good interview congrats Choncey :) !
I've always wanted to read his books about King Arthur and the Holy Grail (my master's dissertation was about arthurian literature) and now I want to read The Last Kingdom before the tv show starts !
Oh and you look very pretty I love your outfit in this video :).
A bientôt !
A very charming, gracious girl.. her enthusiasm is extremely positive, making this interview very interesting. Look at her guest. He seems so comfortable and happy. An, oh, her long expressive fingers! That voice, that accent! And Bernard.. damn, i love his books! (And his rings, too!).
These books are sooo good. And the TV series is awesome too!
What a fascinating and adorable exchange 🥰
I am a recent fan of his books, thank to my dad. Love the story of Uthred so far!
Great author.My favorite.
great job!
Great video, Choncey! =D He is one of my favorite authors. This interview changed my opinion about the TV series. I was concerned it could affect his writing in some way. But listening to his opinion about the TV series, and how he trusts in the production and the actors, I see it can actually affect his writing in a positive way! Thanks! =)
+eduliborio The TV series is very good and I did not know nothing about him before I started watching it.
Choncey you are a beutiful, intelligant role model !!!! Brilliant video as always :)
BC does more than story telling, his history is very close to what is known & as he said- historic notes explain when he changes anything
This was absolutely brilliant! I think my favourite question that you asked him was why he chose to write fiction instead of nonfiction (since he writes about real historical events so frequently). Now I've got the biggest crush on Bernard Cornwell
+Vanessa Buttino I think we ALL do. If only he narrated his audiobooks! xxx
Choncey Boddington
So true! With that voice?! Ugh. I die.
That was lovely :)
Well done!
Thank you Dee xxx
;)
Bernard is a friend of mine on Facebook. I keep two sets of his Arthur series, my all time favorite books
He looks and sounds younger than his actual age incredible
Cornwell is amazing!!!
brilliant
Good stuff
Brida, and Uhtred at a steering oar, and 'St. Hild in the buttercups' kept me from sleep many nites.
Mr. Cornwell, I am not a 'fan' as it's generally understood. . .but i feel compelled to write this - even though u will probly never read it. Compliments must be tedious after a while. . . . it is not possible to quantify the enjoyment your work has given me. Just to say that u r a member of my magic 3%. my educated, subjective opinion i feel to be valid. The only ARTS i have not formally studied are Ballet & Opera. . . Also, the audio books have opened a whole new Art form for me (at my age !!!). It helps when the narrator is likewise brilliant, Mr. Keeble and the late Frederick speak in voices that surpass my internal reading voices....... Allow me to bow in the 'presence' of genius. . .and to you all, many thanks................................. djc
The show is really good.
Would love to hear why he choose to potray Alfred the great as kinda of a A hole in his books ? LOL I know he said he wrote his own prejudices into his portrayal of Alfred.
Being a descendant of Utread of Northumbria (along with Princess Diana and her sons) I am confused by the history presented. But I love the stories.
What a coup! Well done Cinzia. Despite your protestations you've achieved a LOT for someone so young. Life's a journey, it doesn't all end when you turn thirty.
books are excellent, especially the first 3 books ,
'Agincourt' is another brilliant read. by BC
+Bernard Cornwell, does the author quote Led Zeppelin song titles in his novels ? (Trampled under foot, Up the hills and far away are two I noticed)
What was the historical author Mr. Cornwell referenced regarding a good book on the period? Stanton Fristard?
I think George Macdonald Frasers Flashman novels were an early example of successful historical and entertaining stories.
id love to know how much control BC had over the changes from the book to tv . some are baffling changes , uhtred fighting Leofric on tv but steapa in book (odda the youngers minder, makes sense! Leofric dosen't add anything
I just discovered "The pagan Lord", it's wonderful. !!
Mr Cornwell please continue with the Nathaniel Starbuck books Ta
I just finished War Lord im sad i get no more Uhtred.
Why not do a series about Uhtred descendants around the time of the Norman invasion?
Does anyone know the name of the book Mr. Cornwell mentions about the Saxon period?
this interview bought me to watch the sow
p.s. Sorry Bernard Cornwell about the error in your surname. I meant to write Cornwell!
I watched Episode 1, Season 1 on my iPhone. Can't get to Episode 2, Season 1!
march 2017
I gotta figure how to have a beer with Bernard. I promise I'll try not to pronounce it "BerNARD".
I very carelessly lost my parents, beautiful. Sir Terry would be proud...............well I am
I loved all the characters in the show except Uhtred... unfortunately. He needed to be bigger, stronger and more brutal in my eyes. All the other characters were nailed. Alfred, Beocca, Leofric, Ubba, Ragnar (s), and both oddas. BUT THERE WAS NO STEAPA!!!!! :O
i didnt read the books, however, though Utred was sort of a femmy "Dane" he is kinda badass, crushes puss, and does fuck people up... so...
xxHouseInMotionxx I do see what you mean. I reckon I would think he was fine if i hadn't read the books. I was just expecting a bigger guy - Uhtred in the book frequently says he is a head above most, with acceptions like Ubba and Steapa (it's written in 1st person as uhtred ). He was also given the nickname of uhtraedere - Uhtred the wicked. That dude isn't wicked. He looks more like a porn star.
Having watched the series before reading the books (I'm up to book 5), I tend to disagree. Uhtred is actually a very strong moral character in the books (so far), even though he obviously has his flaws. "Bigger and stronger", who cares really, and "more brutal" - he is indeed quite brutal in the series as well, but just like the books, he has his own moral center and rarely sways.
I refer you to the scene in which he basically slaughters an unarmed peasant - in cold blood, who was unarmed and fleeing - who was stealing from his estate. Then screams at his hysterical, horrified wife: "THIS IS JUSTICE!!!" Brutal, yes, but a perfectly moral and justified act in his eyes.
As for no Steapa, yeah that kind of sucks, but I think for TV purposes it made for a more exciting confrontation if the duel were between well-established friends, rather than introducing another character. Perhaps he'll show up in season 2?
Deehvad yeah good point about Steapa. When/if the next season will arrive, they are going to have to change a fair bit as Steapa playes quite an important role up until the 9th book.
tank 943
Same for a lot of characters actually... there are a lot of "new guys" that show up, not to mention any one of Uhtred's half-dozen women...
Great interview, loved most of the books but sadly the tv series is not up to par.
What is the name of the Author he mentions at 4:35, Stan and...
I can't figure out what he is saying, but I want to read the book
Have you found it? It might be Anglo-Saxon England by F.M.Stenton
Next season ? Release date ?
march 2017

destiny at all.
They screwed it up.
How WRONG he was! Wrote an exceptional historical novel series which was transformed into a cheap tv series that misses out much of the bettles and - more importantly - much of the humour of the books! He should have read the script + he should have insisted to put a decent sum of money into the production, which could have put the series on the same shelf where we find Game of thrones, Vikings or Marco Polo. He should have sold the rights to HBO or Netflix instead of BBC. BBC is great for what it is, but using the same kind of costumes that usually used in documentaries and using a soooo typical Continental climate location instead of original British locations is major turn-down for me :( :( :(
Hope he sells the Grail Series to some company that puts a real effort into the production!
and Hild!!! raped saved & uhtreds woman - who returns to god! she dosen't become a sword warrior- so changing that dosen't add! it confuses & dosen't make sense
what a lovely video :) I thoroughly enjoyed it x
