Hey Zurik, I think youre the man for the job on this... The recent mandalorian tv series felt so childish and cheesey. Im convinced it could have been so much more if it was darker and gritty. You should consider making a tribute video to it but slapping a punisher or the new "The Batman" trailer kind of feel to it. I think you would hit it out of the park.

Another brilliance of the creators of TLK, is the way they made subtle changes to each characters makeup & hairstyling to 'age' the otherwise still young actors during the 8years of making 5 series! Adding grey to the hair of only those actors of 40+, was genious! Grey on any younger actors, would have made 'aging' look totally artificial & detract from the overall brilliance of the entire show! The subtlety employed in reality, is far more convincing & believable!

It’s a powerful point. Alfred the great is one of if not the most important kings in British history and he had a painful illness his whole life while never claiming to be an incredible warrior. In real life he wasn’t like that at all.
He was athletic and strong as well as deeply pious and a sharp intellectual that wanted to everyone in England to be able to read.
Alfred the Great of Wessex, Charlemagne of the Franks and Marcus Aurelius of Rome are probably the only men get within grasp of being perfect men. They all embodied both the archetypes of warrior poet and philosopher king.

He also predicted 1000 years ahead of time that England would be de-Christianised and subverted by seditious greedy elite. Which is why he wanted everyone to be able to read.
As GKChesterton wrote as Alfred in Ballad of the White Horse:
“Though I give this land to Our Lady,
      That helped me in Athelney,
Though lordlier trees and lustier sod
And happier hills hath no flesh trod
Than the garden of the Mother of God
Between Thames side and the sea,
I know that weeds shall grow in it
      Faster than men can burn;
And though they scatter now and go,
In some far century, sad and slow,
      I have a vision, and I know
      The heathen shall return.
They shall not come with warships,
They shall not waste with brands,
But books be all their eating,
And ink be on their hands.”

I also love how Uhtred has actually been the most loyal to him, even after he has died. The Monk/King Alfred of Wessex was an Anglo-Saxon leader/warrior.
At that time, they would say, Anglo-Saxons, not Englishmen ! ( Saxons, Germanic tribes who invaded ''England'' after the departure of the Roman legions...)
The first King of England was certainly AEthestan , son of Edward the Elder
he is the one you defeated the Vikings at York
Alfred the Great, defeated the Great Viking Army of Guthrum, about 878.
He made peace with the Danes and Guthrum.
Guthrum, an Anglo-Saxon ''prince'' , the leader of the Danelaw....

And he helped creating the Danelaw, after the defeat of the Viking Warlord Guthrum, in May 878 .
T here were also the Danish Mercia and Northumbria ...therefore, the idea of an England was not yet established..
the first King of ''England '' came with King AEthelstan, son of Edward, the Elder ..
      he died , I believe, around 939 ....

He should have won an Oscar or Bafta for his performance. I always hate how Hollywood actors get the world wide recognition playing some dumb action cliché or a huge drama film with hundreds of millions behind it, meanwhile actors like Dawson working on shows like this and theatre don't get noticed whatsoever. And they wonder why new actors following in the footsteps of Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart etc. are so hard to find nowadays. Guess what? They started in theatre, go figure.
All I'm saying is Dawson is one example of a future god tier actor but because Hollywood ignores them, it makes me sad potential knighthood worthy actors are ignored because they work on small projects. Imo I think it shows how they care about the performance more than the money.

Alfred is/was a phenomenal character. Constantly torn. Constantly suffering (from Crohns disease). Still serving as nobly as he could all the same. He and Utred didn't always get along or agree, but most of the time they found a middle ground and worked together. Which is more than virtually any other English king would have. He set England upon the path of unity. He saved his people. He saved his people's faith (in England at least).
Fun fact, Alfred 'The Great' was the only English king to ever be awarded that title.

Edward's downfall is that he is far too easily manipulated. He thought he had escaped Uhtred's manipulation, but only because he was falling into Aethelhelm's camp without knowing it. Sure he eventually started wisening up to it, but once you've shown you can be manipulated, you invite others to do the same.

Such a beautifully crafted dynamic relationship between two very powerful and well-developed characters, and that scene was a perfect end to that relationship. The dynamic between Alfred and Uhtred is undoubtedly one of the best elements of this wonderful show. Two men who are polar opposites in their worldviews and approaches to conflict, yet despite their apparent loathing for one another, there is an underlying, begrudging mutual respect. Alfred respects Uhtred's ability as a warrior and the latter respects the former's cunning. Yet because of their differences they never find a way to really get along, maintaining that tension throughout the show. I almost cried in season 3 when the king finally showed him the respect and gratitude he deserved and Uhtred honored his dying wishes to preserve his vision of England.

My favourite part of Alfred’s character in the show (and the recent film 7 kings must die) is that characters constantly refer to Alfred even after he’s gone. He was that revered as a King people always remember his legacy and his dream of an England. His descendants and relatives are constantly referred to in memory of him, like “blood of Alfred”, “ grandson of Alfred”, “widow of Alfred”, and his d children and grandchildren always refer to “our fathers dream, our grandfathers dream etc”. You have to be an incredible ruler to leave such a legacy on everyone who comes after you. I also remember how much the Dane’s celebrated his death, like he was that much of an adversary to pagan’s they were celebrating his fall, that’s when you know he was a legend. Alfred the Great!

King Alfred in this film is potrayed as a man with vision. He saw miles ahead and used his knowledge well.
It is one thing to know, it is another to apply it well.
Alfred knew he was not a great warrior, so he used Uhtred well(though Uhtred is the only person he respected)
He knew his army was not strong, so he negotiated until things tipped on his favor.
He pretended to be a "christian fanatic" to gain favor from the church but he saw them a necessity only for order.
He was rigid and hard-headed sometimes but generally a great king.
Edward has a lot of work to do.

In reality Alfred the Great was a great warrior king, but also a great visionary, educator, tactician, nation-builder and negotiator.
He didn’t pretend to have such strong faith, the real Alfred the Great was very much a big Christian and a God fearing man.
His son in real life was a very good King who took East Anglia off the Vikings, pathing the way for his son, Athelstan, to become the first King of England by conquering Northumbria.
In terms of Grandfather, father, son. Those three were just about as good as it ever gets.

Dawson is the only one so far that can portray Alfred how he should be. Dawson really needs bigger projects. Just amazing.

My second favorite character, after Finan. I love how complex he is, and I love how well David Dawson portrays his complexity with such humanity and subtlety, since Alfred could sometimes come off like some marble statue if the actor and writers weren't careful.
(With the audiobooks that I listen to, I also have a soft spot for Father Pyrlig, more than the show, mostly because it's really jarring that the show has all the Welsh characters speaking with English accents. Bless Jonathan Keeble and Matt Bates for reading the books and giving him such a brash and earthy Welsh accent. Not so much with the other narrators, but that's okay.)

There are many great men, fewer good ones. Alfred was of the few that are both.

David Dawson played Alfred perfectly. Alfred is easily one of the best characters in the whole series.

This is by far my favorite show. Alfred is by far the strongest character in this series. To be that sick and remain that strong as a king is immensely powerful.

Great video! Alfred became my favorite character, even above Uthred. A flawed, but great king and man.

I loved this series till the end but i have to admit, it was never the same without Alfred. Uhtred and Alfreds relationship was one of the best ive ever seen in a t.v series.

What an immense portrayal by David Dawson this was. The scene where Edward is taking Alfreds place due to him being unwell was a real downer as he steals most scenes he is in, especially discussion scenes. Then when he pops up half way through the discussion was just an amazing feeling. Get to see Alfred The Great boss a discussion like no other before he passes on.

The Last Kingdom is such a great show and badly needed at a time like this when we need to reconnect with our heritage so desperately. The portrayal of Alfred the Great by David Dawson was absolutely magical!
