One of the best shows ever! The acting, directing and cinematography is so stellar. 🔥
Totally agree! The books are very good too.
it was amazing !! such a good series finally too.. like i was so happy and emotional when it started raining 🤣😭😭
hahaha i literally just said the same thing on their IG, like exact same three phrases back to back. feel like chapter my life is over now that the show is done 🥲
I'm confused about one thing. Season 1 made it seems like Uhtred was a title instead of his name, since he received it after his brother died. So is it a title or his actual name?
@@thegreatpage5912 His name was Osbert before Uhtred. Uhtred son of Uhtred was and is a title so to speak. This is exactly how it was in that time for real so its loosely based on that.
This series everything i wanted from Vikings... It is SO MUCH better! Vikings got worse and worse with each and every season and The Last Kingdom got better and better... What a great series!
I totally agree. I stopped watching Vikings because it got worse and much more violent. I love The Last Kingdom!
Nah vikings got worse after Ragnar died
Vikings was a great show until Ragnar was alive....once he died it was downhill
Vikings was closer to true History than The Last Kingdom.. Hence why Vikings was on the History Channel.
The Last Kingdom fells like it's a story that was written by one person. Mainly Because it was! Half the Characters share the exact same ignorance and make the same mistakes as one another because it all comes from one person's Thought Patterns.
The Last Kingdom favors the English side of history! Whereas Vikings tells it from the Vikings point of view which is why it was more Violent and true to fact.
Where are all the shield maidens in TLK? There is none because for an Englishman.. Woman should not be on the Battlefield.
Don't get me wrong TLK is a great series.. but the only truths are Some Names and all the Places.. everything between is Fictional
@@Renji_1o1 True, but i want entertainment and not a history lesson... I am smart enough to get that and look it up. Series are for entertainment purposes or i watch a documentary. That is just my point of view
Bernard Cornwell, the Author of The Last Kingdom, is a direct descendent of Uhtred.
His real father was called William Oughtred (or Uhtred) who was a Canadian Airman in WW2.
He only became Cornwell because he was adopted and his father went back across the pond and left him in England

I absolutely loved the show it was great to watch after finishing vikings.
@@haydnturner9210 Yes!!! The perfect combination!
@@haydnturner9210 I'll give Vikings a try but I feel like I will still love The Last Kingdom more. I like having more or equal Saxon side, not the vikings or Danish. Also from the trailer and clips of Viking, it seems they don't have the same kind of atmosphere
Doesn't matter.. Uthred of bebbenburg of The Last Kingdom will still be a hero in my eyes.
It's in keeping with Norse tradition I'd say to take a historical figure and make him legendary
The best series I have ever watched nothing seems to compare to the acting and producing of this .
I felt this series draw me into it as if I was actually along side every actor .. amazing truly just amazing .. BTW I watch 5 series in 4 days there was no switching it off .
Never have I liked history in my 51 years now I cannot get enough , would be absolutely brilliant to have a series going thru all the centuries .
A walk through Bamburgh castle today is a pleasure. It's about a 45 minute drive from my home - and Hadrians Wall built in 122 is literally a 100 yards from my front doo amazing theres anything left considering its been heavily industrialised for nearly 2000 years ! The Roman Camp of Segedunum, buried for that time due to shipbuilding is across a road. The Wall that influenced Game of Thrones writer

Loved the season 5 ending and sad that it's over now :(
New movie in production called Seven Kings Must Die, which finishes the Last Kingdom series 🙏🏼
Try marco polo
It was sad and great and very emotional - but they Scottish king was so contradicting. There was never really „game of thrones harem“ scenes with naked girls and suddenly there is just for nothing really - no explanation why a king kn his late 40 (?) is without wife and the scene didn’t fit to the dialogue that he is in deep love with a wife of another man (who?). This character felt like a psycho sometimes wise/calm and sometimes so „feral“. Character and decision of scenes and dialogue confused me. But otherwise great series and bridda died aswell as Aethelflead and even sigtryggr (a character fairly early in the Show) was so much of character that I felt really sad about him too.

One of the only shows just as good as the books
Or you could say as good as history. Uhtred was not alive during Alfreds time that's just for the show. But what they did to show it was Alfreds dream of an England and how they showed the lady of mercia being a key foundation in that idea of an England after her fathers death. And little bastard son of Edward will one day be the frist King of England. Very historicly actuate and pretty of drama to make it a fantastic show

Sad thing is season 5 is final....they rushed the story through the season
@@leaveme3559 I do not think it was rushed to bad. Nothing to how bad the last season of Game of Thrones was. They wrapped up Bridas story arc well an it was cool having Uhtred and Edwards kids having such big roles. I think it was all tied together and was definitely a great find on Netflix for me

@@BrunoEspadinha enjoy. It's good from start to finish plus there is a film coming this year.
The book is awesome. Its written as an autobiography in style. Very good, you get alot of internal dialogue and mental notes from the narrator (who is Utred telling you his story).
Of course, books leave film for dead in the story department.
But you need to be able to read fluently and have a picture in your head.
Books have had their heyday unfortunately.

The series is a Great combination of history and fiction.
Another interesting fact: by the time Svein Forkbeard (Svend Tveskæg) was king, the Danes had already converted to Christianity. Svein's father Harold Bluetooth (being the origin of the name of that sharing function on your various devices) famously had the conversion of the Danes inscribed on the Jelling Stones, and those rune stones are colloquially called the baptismal certificate of Denmark.
The Danish way of adapting to wherever they went, being tolerant of the places they conquered bore much more fruit than their initial strategy of raiding and pillaging.

Thank you for the great visuals in this video. I was just introduced to Uhtred in a video about Bamburg Castle. It looks like you used lots of illustrations from the great age of storybooks in the late 19th/early 20th century. I'm thinking Howard Pyle, N. C. Wyeth, and the Brandywine School. I'm wondering why that king was sitting on his throne in shallow water on the seashore, however.

In Gillingham of Dorset is an outskirt called Peacemarsh, where Cnut capitulated to Edmund Ironside after the battle of Penselwood. Ironside chased Cnut to London where Cnut regained his forces, turned round and destroyed Ironside and his army. A lot of history happened round here being close to Shaftesbury and Glastonbury and on the main trading routes between Winchester and the western lands, Gillingham is one of the oldest established towns of England, said that Joseph of Aramuthea once passed through what was a fortified trading town and kings up to Edward the Confessor had their summer hunting lodge underneath where my own flat was built. The town can also boast of Edward Rawson, the Englishman who first started the tradition of the thanksgiving speech over in the American colonies making a speech at the first formal thanksgiving dinner of the colony. Sadly his children all hated the place and one by one either died or came back to Dorset.

What an epic series last kingdom wish it goes beyond 5 series actors playing the roles are brilliant

How about one that explains how Englands monarchies came into existence. Royalty has always baffled me . Because royal families had to have started from average families. 🤔
To the best of my knowledge most kings claim decent from a God, except the ones that claim decent from Muhammad, or Ali .
David Starkey has a collection of documentrys called " Monarchy"..the first one is called "A Nation State.."There are about 7 in total..fascinating watch. X
Away back when, it came down to the sword. You gained land with brute force and grew from there. The whole 'from God' thing was just man-made validation of why they should rule
If You pay attention. One of the kings Uttered help. Was a monk Dream and thats why he was coronated. Im just sick of the power of the church and tall the lies
Royalty and monarchy are strictly tied to how feudalism came about. After the fall of the Roman Empire, citizens gradually fled the cities for the countryside in small communities. The families that founded those shelters gave room to fugitives in exchange for loyalty and part of their produce. As the shelters grew, there was need for protection and those shelters became castles. The leaders of those small kingdoms became kings or marquees or counts, princes, viscounts, queens etc...
Slowly though, for one reason or another, these small kingdoms banded together in larger, powerful countries.
By far the best show ever
I am Uthred son of Uthred. My son is also Uthred, and so was my grandfather. My great grandfather was Uthred, also the son of another Uthred. Even my mom was Uthred. My cousin? Uthred. My second cousin once removed? Uthred. We are all Uthred.

So I guess the real version wasn’t exciting enough for the producers and writers of the show The Last Kingdom. Still, that is the best mini series I’ve seen in a a long time. Definitely the best out there now. It’s no coincidence that it’s not a product of Hollywood. Doesn’t have enough cheese for Hollywood.
It's a Netflix show.....based on a book series....
Mini series? It has 4 seasons with a 5th on its way
@@wispysubject6982 Much shorter that GOT as S5 is assumed to be the last
@@aishashaikh5466 still not a mini series. A mini series is usually just a few episodes and only 1 season with the aim of telling a small story.
'The real version' has nothing to do with the story. All they share is a name and a home. The show is fairly historically accurate to what we know of the time period. The kings and the big leaders are all real but Uhtred is just fictional and was never intended to be based on a real person. The 'real' Uhtred of Bebbanburg was born about 100 years later but is the ancestor of the author of the books the series is based on and so he took the name and wrote a story set during the time of Alfred the Great. The key events are all real but they have to fill in the gaps in the story. We don't know the name of every person that was alive at that time and took part let alone what kind of person they were.
Wikipedia said "The Unready" comes from "raed" which is advice, and the name would mean "ill advised". Just came to mind and thought I'd mention it.
Well that certainly fits the way he's portrayed in The Last Kingdom. Just about everything Aethelraed(?) does is ill advised.
@@David_Fellner Aethelred of Mercia and Aethelred the Unready are not the same person. Kinda like Cnut, the danish king defeated at Tettenhall and Cnut, king of Denmark, Scandinavia and England are different people.

This last season is the best one so far.
The word feud is directly a Saxon word in use today, as are many others. Ironically, the Danish Vikings came from Jutland, now Denmark and were the descendents of the Saxon Jutes 400 years earlier. There would have been a certain commonality of language, thus enabling communication between Saxons and Danes.
