Flashback to '79 😌 How cool was Rickie Lee Jones for this one. And WHY hasn't Sheryl Crow covered this tune yet?! ❤️ Do you remember the first song you heard Steve Gadd on?
50 ways probably 👌🏽
Like it was yesterday. I was fourteen or fifteen and I was flicking through the THREE channels that we had in Germany at the time (those were the days!) and the arty farty one of those three had a Jazz program with a wonderful concept. They woud just invite a Jazz musician to handpick their favorite sidemen, taped a show with a small audience, laced it with short interviews in between the songs and that was it. I happened to be stumbling on a Steve gig. He had Eddie Gomez on bass, Warren Bernhardt on keys, Ack van Rooyen on trumpet and flugelhorn and a sax player whose name I have forgotten. So the first song they played on this set was a Mercer Ellington standdard, Things Ain't What They To Be. How fitting, cause I used to think before seeing that show that Phil Collins was the best there ever was and will be. I couldn't believe that there a cats out there like Steve. I watched the whole show and tuned in a week later when they aired the second part as well. Even though I couldn't make head or tail out of the music. It simply sounded terrible in my ears. But I figured, if a guy can play such incredible stuff and chooses to play this kind of music, there must be something to it which I don't get. And I thought to myself, there must be more of this where this is coming from and I educated myself and started to check out all those famous fusion players like Al, Herbie, and Chick and started to gadd it, pun intended. Having been a jazz fan for 30+ years is entirely Steve Gadd's fault.
50 ways for me. Had no idea as a little one who it was, just that it was special. Like “Sir Duke”, just something about it. Such a nice job on your cover!
50 ways. Was only 7, didn't know who Gadd was and had only banged on a drumset a few times (babysitter's son had one) but loved the drumming on that song. First song I was aware of being Gadd was "We're in this Love Together" by Jarreau. Loved Jarreau, and Gadd's drumming for him was a major early influence on me.
50 ways! But back then I didnt even know who Paul Simon was, let alone Steve. Mom just played it on the radio, and I was jammin in the back seat.
Damn , that kit sounds S0Oo beautiful when your play Gadd. Like butter and silk.
The fill after the break part is so god damm cool
Gadd also opens with it on the paul simon tune Oh Marion. Never heard anyone else do it. He’s the man.
I've heard a lot of drummers try and play this tune. You are the 1st one that gets the groove and feel. Thank you. 😊
Man you look like the happiest guy on earth! Good for you. Love your channel!
I first saw him live (not knowing him at all) with Paul Simon on 6th June 1980 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. An amazing concert. The best sounding rock concert I've ever been to. When they played Late in the Evening the place went nuts. A few days later I bought Melody Maker, and there was a review of the concert, and Gadd's drumming was mentioned specifically. I kept that review and 43 years later it's on the wall in my rehearsal room.
This is the definition of responsible grooving. Loving the covers man!
Thanks for the smile Rob.
Butter.
Frickin. Butter.
Nice Pocket... Nice Groove. You did it justice man.
Does it get much better then that? The little fill into the verse after the break is so buttery sweet!!
Super funky swing time.
I was entertained
i've heard this song dozens of times in stores or restaurants and never knew that was Steve Gadd on drums 🤯
Me neither! Such a cool song
Bamm, so cool so musical!
Timeless!
Awesome- thanks. I had just tried playing along to that song tonight. I did ok, but now I can see/learn the tricks I missed.
The first time I remember hearing Steve Gadd, was when I was with my dad, as he was driving around in his red Pontiac Parisianne. He had the radio on, and Paul Simon's 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover came on. I was intrigued by the drumming, but was unaware of who it was. This was in the mid 1970s. I also remember hearing Paul Simon's Late In The Evening, on the radio, in the early 1980s. Again, I was mesmerized by the drumming, but was unaware that it was Steve Gadd. I also remember this song. You did a great cover of it. In 2016, I was fortunate enough to see James Taylor, live in Edmonton, Alberta. Steve Gadd was the drummer. The concert was awesome. I hope you have a great weekend. Cheers, Rob! ✌️🥁
Steve Gadd, wow, Aja Album 1977 one of my good friends and drumming guru KJ played the 'new' Steely Dan album, sigh! I've been practicing ever since!
Leave it to Rob to kill it! Great job! 👍🏻
Wow - that was amazing to watch~ thank you!!!
That was Greeezzzzzayyy !!
That song came out when I was in the 9th grade. Didn't find out it was Steve Gadd until much later.
Epic Rob. Brilliant. I used to play this song in one of my old bands. The signature Gadd lick at 2.10 is genius.
That Steve Gadd is pretty good. Kid's got somethin special.
J'adore Rickie lee jones et spécialement l'album Pirates dans lequel aussi de grands musiciens jouent
Gadd a une énorme musicalité sur les rythmes lents
Merci pour votre travail
Bravo Rob!!!!! Soooo sooooo good. You really bit into the meat there.
Very Nice! - First time I've come across Robert 'Beatdown' Brown - such a sweet groove! Nice playing - really love your style. You have quite the touch for sure. Thanks for sharing such a great video. I think the first time I heard Gadd was 50 Ways - and yes - I didn't know who Steve Gadd was at the time and I don't think I was playing drums yet - but I remember distinctly how cool the drums sounded. I had to be 7 or 8. Very cool - Thank You!
Fabulous job....and I have a signed Gadd snare head on my wall at home.
Beautifully played!
That was so good to watch, you make it look so easy. great feel!!
Wow! That is super-tasty - and I really enjoyed watching you play it. Thanks! 😍
Spot on...perfect feel
Hey rob
Just watched mr. Steve Gadd play for 2 hrs with James Taylor . Totally shocked as I had no idea he was playing.
Seeing James play was making the month fantastic as we had to wait since 2020 to finally see play , Yahoo , what a night . And now by surprise seeing the Gadd get behind the kit .... oh my I’m in heaven “. Loved every moment. Went by way to fast though!! What a night!
Smooth.....!!!!!
Beautifully done Rob.... 🙌
Wow! So awesome!
That snare man. Dialed in to the max for this tune. Sounds really good.
Spot on man !
i love the sound of your cymbal playing man!
Super cool Rob lovely controlled played dude 👍✊
Thats a Real masterpeace this track...congratulations on your take...i think Gadds approach combines all his finesse in swinging and grooving a pop track, Never heard anything like this again. I remember this track made me think as a kid, that this was very special. ..
My father who is also a drummer was and still is an avid Steely Dan fan. He bought my first drum set for me for my 5th bday in 1975.,(68 ludwig set that I still own today). Anyhow my first Taste of Gadd would probably be Steely Dan Aja album that my father would have me practice songs to. Little did I know I was being influenced by many great drummers from all the music he picked out for me to learn and play. Ricky Lee Jones album was one of my mothers favorite she wore that vinyl out! Nice job covering it Rob!
Totally awesome ! Would love to see a cover of Lido Shuffle
I remember discovering this song about 15 years ago quite randomly, and absolutely had to figure out who it was! Totally addictive.
No idea it was Gadd playing here! Brilliant cover :)
My first awareness of Steve Gadd was from the Double Vision record by Bob James and David Sanborn (1986). Timeless jazz music.
Somehow I made through 50 years and never heard the buzz about that flutter lick of Steve's. Got all the rest in line, but missed this one.
Man, Edie Brickell really sounded like Rikki.
Perfect!!
So great, so musical, and still groovin'
Nice freaking job, Steve
I loved your drumming Rob!
50 Ways To Leave Your Lover was the first song that I heard with Steve Gadd in it. It was popular on the radio when I was younger and even then I was captivated by the drums on that song. While in high school, the Aja album by Steely Dan was a favorite of mine and I was drawn to the great drumming on that album. Gadd's playing on the title track was way impressive to me from the first time I heard it.
So smooth
The song a timeless treasure, great job Rob !
I'm probably older than most of you who follow Rob, I was 12 yrs old when "50 Ways" came out - my father and I were immediately blown away by that groove! Rob, thanks so much for exposing this classic to all and great job covering it - I only realized much later in life that I grew up in such an incredible era - fun times, great TV shows, and phenomenal music! Okay, the clothing styles were pretty ugly!!!
Oh that is so cool. Every movement, every beat.
Loved it!!!
Very nice. Love this tune & gadd playing on it. Great job on your take 👌🏽🔥
This song is a great tune for a drummer to get in to. I think your feel and groove sounds great.
Loved it!!!! As a drummer back in the day I knew it had finesse, but you always school me for sure.
Keep up the good work!
Man...that brings me back!
Thanks.
Smooth!
Outstanding!
Impatient !!!
Knocked that one outta the park Rob, some smooth groove right there!
Steve Gadd's drumming w/ Ringo on McCartneys "Take it Away" was killer too, he played on that Tug of War lp in 81'.
What a career he’s had, man ❤️
Great drumming, Rob. 👍
Killer!
Nice cover Rob. Must be "50 ways" was the first song I recognized Steve on in 1975, I was 15 or 16 playing a couple years by then. He started fairly late in life showing there is hope for all late starters. I was working in a Hi-fi shop back in 1982 and Rickie LJ's were among the demo albums we used. Vinyl of course !
Awesome..........
So nice...just makes me smile
Amazing pocket!
My first glimpse at Steve Gadd was the slightly older “50 Ways to Leave your Lover” by Paul Simon-long before I knew who Gadd was.
Awesome 💕
Bruh. GADD IS SO FREAKING IDENTIFIABLE! U copped the feel tho man. So much fun to play.
Big fan of yours Mr. Brown :)
Kit sounds great and them pies are dark and nasty! Bangin.
Very very tasteful cover of this groovy number. Played this quite a lot note for note from a drum score, but after watching this I'm gonna start improvising a little more freely. Love the channel by the way. Hey on the subject of Steve Gadd how about you cover Steely Dan's Aja. Apart from Mr Gadd (who does a solo at the end) there are some awesome musicians on that track including Wayne Shorter on tenor.
garate flow bro 👏🏼
So Kool...
How do you get track without drums? Sweet song. Love the flutter lick Gaddism.
I use an app called Moises for iOS. There's a full review of the app on my channel
@@RobBeatdownBrown LOVING Moises!!
YES!! Everyone who didnt know Steve played on this one, also go check out We Belong Together by Ricky Lee Jones.
Awesome job Beatdown!! Rob what is that your using on the snare. Literally just watched a Stanton Moore demo of a Gretsch snare, and he was using the same thing!!!
Hey Rob, I have recently found myself looking for the right ear piece to practice with. The wifi ones I have just get so easily buried with the acoustic sound of the drums. Then it just turns to mud and have to stop, then restart. Thank you for all you do, cheers!
Heyyyyyyy yeah!
Great feeling! Awesome performance, all in smoothness, control, and nicely « velvet-oriented ». This piece of drum seems so natural, so spontaneous musically speaking, that it suggests me a simple question, Rob.
When you are in a track like this, what is your balance between conscious and unconscious played notes? 20/80? 40/60? 60/40?
I am curious 😉
I love your style and your cool - groove responsibly - attitude. And You are a part of my drum journey with your youtube channel.
I am myself what I call mainly an « unconscious » player.
I practice a lot in all consciousness, but when I play with my band, I let my hands and feet go. It’s how I love it, but I was curious about your opinion about this.
Sweet! Great feel!
Which crash is that on your right that's between the ride and crash? It's lower in height than the other 2. It sounds so good! I want one! Thanks.
Great cover! Fantastic kit!! What sizes are you using for you PHX?
Musical and floating groove. What kind of snare is that, Rob?
Damn ur good
Holy crap, that was tasty. 🤯
Haha. Thanks man 🙂
Hey Rob, what brand/model of monitors are on the stands behind you?
Dude you got it down. This couldn't be your first listen?
Interesting that this is the first Gadd song you heard. You didn't hear him on Aja, only two years before this? 😎

🥳🍻🇫🇮🤝🇨🇦
You captured that lazy, greasy, effortless Steve Gadd sound; really tough to do.
Great song. I always thought it had sort of a funky bluesy feel to it. Nice job man.
