Lately I've really been trying to improve my feel on the drums... and what better song to practice feel with then this Paul Simon tune "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" with the legendary Steve Gadd on drums.
Before you trolls decide to come out and tell me I missed ghosts notes, or played the main groove wrong please just save it. I know it's not anywhere near perfect or the way Steve Gadd plays it. But that's not the point. The point in learning and playing this track was to challenge myself and hopefully inspire you to continually challenge yourself and become a better musician - that's what it's all about.
So I know I took a huge risk by "covering" one of the greatest songs/drum beats of all time but I had fun doing it, and that's all that really matters. I hope you do the same!
    To your drumming success,
    - Jared Falk

The drums' part is the hook of whole song. Thank you !

This was one of the first unforgettable grooves of my early years (learning drums at age 13). Till today I haven't quite mastered it, being able to "sound like it", though.
I believe there's one kind of mystery to that groove, that has'nt been focused on, apparently. Listen to the Live-at-MSG-concert, and you'll get what I mean! There, Steve Gadd plays it different from the studio version. Not the notes - they're more or less the same - I'm talking about the feeling! It must be something between eighth notes and double time shuffle, but just a reminiscence of shuffle. And that's what really makes it dance, apart from Steve's wonderfully delicate Hi-Hat- and Snare playing, of course. Only in his drum solo he fully switches to that triplet feeling for two bars.
One more difference I recognize: Steve Gadd interrupts his four-on-the-floor in every last two bars of the chorus and syncopates the BD to the "one and". It gives you sort of a little-heart-attack feeling, which is very characteristic of the song. Never getting tired checking out this tune, it's so much worth it!

Two reasons why I fell in love with this track the first time I heard it in the 1970’s was the lyric and the drums, exceptional work guys, mi love it!!!

It's not a matter of missed ghost notes, it's just a matter of feeling.
And in this video you got a great feeling, unlike many other drummers - even very good ones - that are playing groove like this one.
Btw, it's difficult to have a good feeling when playing on a track, but you did a great job.

"The problem is all inside your head", she said to me
"The answer is easy if you take it logically
I'd like to help you in your struggle to be free
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover"
She said, "It's really not my habit to intrude
Furthermore, I hope my meaning won't be lost or misconstrued
But I'll repeat myself at the risk of being crude
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover
Fifty ways to leave your lover"
You just slip out the back, Jack
    Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
    Just get yourself free
    Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
    And get yourself free
Ooh, slip out the back, Jack
    Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
    You just listen to me
    Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
    And get yourself free
She said, "It grieves me so to see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again"
I said, "I appreciate that and would you please explain
    About the fifty ways?"
She said, "Why don't we both just sleep on it tonight?
And I believe in the morning you'll begin to see the light"
And then she kissed me and I realized she probably was right
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover
Fifty ways to leave your lover
You just slip out the back, Jack
    Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
    Just get yourself free
Oh, you hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
    And get yourself free
    Slip out the back, Jack
    Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
    You just listen to me
    Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee

Yeah! I remember being a 5 year old little girl in the back of the car and hope my mom didn't turn it off because it was "inappropriate" haha. It would drive me nuts trying to think what the drummer was even UP to, I dug it so HARD! Thank you, haven't thought of the song in years, and you made it even cooler than what was in my head. That's some lovely, complicated, awesome noise! Thank you!

How could somebody criticize someone who has a higher level of drumming than others? Come on Jared keep up the good work and never care about those trolls whom just talk in envy or vain. Besides it is a drum cover. A cover in my personal point of view, is never gonna be played the same way as the original one; that is why they are called covers, don´t they?

Sorry about that. I just don't really listen to much Tool so if I covered them it would simply be to get views or because someone requested it, not because I love the music. I think the music is great (from what I've heard), but I don't pull from it for my inspiration. So I doubt I'll ever cover the track.
