- With Finland joining NATO, the alliance's border with Russia has doubled in length. DW's Teri Schultz reports from the town of Imatra, near a border area where Finland is constructing a pilot security fence of 3km length. The fence is set to stretch over 200 km in the upcoming years.

Every decision is/has made by thinking risk of attacking from east. Finland has most bomb shelters by capita in the world. There is not that many main roads from east Finland to main cities. 900 000 men reserve and largest artillery in west EU is there for a reason.
“What Finland’s concerns are?” Seriously? Russia is a threat to their safety.
Allways.
I would consider the long, little fence a simple statement worth it's price.
Obviously you need to start somewhere. 3km test fence around one of 9 border crossings is cosmetic. Same amount around every border crossing is only 27km. On the other hand building a wall or even a fence over the whole border seems silly and very expensive. From Imatra to the sea is a relatively short distance 90km. There are 10 border lakes in that distance alone. That would make most sense. 200km huh? That would mean from the sea to Kitee if fence would be in there only. Nevertheless Kymenlaakso and South Karelia counties would be fully fenced!
I’m glad Finland has been welcomed into NATO, they are a peace loving modern society who belong with the alliance as their values, in the parts that matter most, generally align with the rest of NATO.
All former subjects of the Russian empire are at risk, I completely agree with their prep. Russian infiltrators were already active before the war, I can only imagine that activity is increased now. Shame about the ecological impact, but necessity demands it.

A russian Buffalo Jump...brilliant. I hope the Ukrainian strategists are paying attention.
@@wekurtz72 Lol, you didn't think that The United States can see a war going on and not get involved did you?? We are the strategists, we give Ukraine military coordinates for the targets, so I say they are paying attention.
@@luisrivera3056 I'm American and pro-Ukrainian. I want the russians smashed. What are you going on about?
Not about its length nor about keeping out advancing military forces....it's about drawing that perverbial ..."Line in the sand." A hard limit if you may? Russia is notorious for overstepping. Testing limits. I believe Finland is on point in this regard. 👌

Oh this is classic journalism
lol russia isnt going to touch finland, or they will find out about article 5...
If it is so easy, then just invite ukies to nato, and russia will immediately windraw they troops in fear of an article.
@@palar4195 to join nato you can't be in a conflict...that is the whole reason why putin attacked ukraine, and georgia...
If Putin did not want NATO to expand, he should have not attacked Ukraine and left things alone, Puttin is the only one to blame for Finland joining NATO and Sweeden seeking membership also. Like all dictators Putin is never happy with what he has and wants more and I hope he's made so bad of a mistake that it will end him.
Putin attacked Ukraine because NATO expanded. NATO broke an agreement with Russia not to expand eastwards. But they did it anyway. A U.S. sponsored coup of Kiev, overthrowing the pro Russian leader was the final straw for Putin.
Observe the excavator skimming relatively featherweight snow off of the ground to accelerate ground thaw. This is happening.
I guess walls and fences make no sense to people who aren't living 50 feet from the threat....
I say line the border with farmers and tractors.. 🤣
Nah that's too OP.
Finnish Number One !
What Finland also has to worry about is Russia sneaking separatist in there to try and destabilize ether parts or all of Finland.
Problem is Russia can’t occupy parts of Finland because it would be considered an attack and instate article 5 of the treaty which would send nato troops into Finland along side Finnish troops
Russia does not scared to attack them if they are being harmed by finland and nato.
@@amycabacungan6640 Cool but EVERYONE knows Finland joined NATO to be left alone. Why would we "harm" Russia?
