  • With Finland joining NATO, the alliance's border with Russia has doubled in length. DW's Teri Schultz reports from the town of Imatra, near a border area where Finland is constructing a pilot security fence of 3km length. The fence is set to stretch over 200 km in the upcoming years.

      NATO was never gonna invade Russia, there was also no formal agreement between NATO and Russia that it won’t expand into former USSR territory.
      Eastern Europe willingly joined NATO because they saw A possibility of a resurgent Russia invading them again.

US troops and many volutneers from different NATO countries have been visiting us long before we joined NATO and have been equally often beat by our conscription lads in different kind of situations in rural forests and in winter. Our strenght is that we will defend the land we know how to defend, not diving into unkonwn and trying to attack on a foreing land. That's where we make the difference and most of the men believes in it to this day. If you ever would want to invade our lands, be afraid.

    For over 20 years the Finnish Border Guard have been asking for a proper road on the border. They actually agree that a fence won't do much, but to build the fence there needs to be a proper road. So they saw their moment had come and supported the fence idea to get the road. 😅

    The new fence and technical surveillance will be built on sections of the border that are close to population centers and roads, places that can be easily reached.
    Ultimate majority of the Finnish-Russian border is in unhabited, remote area. There are very few roads or any other traffic infrastructure near the border, especially on the Russian side of the border. Therefore, it is not very likely that Russian authorities could easily have massive amounts of people cross the border, if it requires wandering in the wilderness for several days.

    Every decision is/has made by thinking risk of attacking from east. Finland has most bomb shelters by capita in the world. There is not that many main roads from east Finland to main cities. 900 000 men reserve and largest artillery in west EU is there for a reason.

    Obviously you need to start somewhere. 3km test fence around one of 9 border crossings is cosmetic. Same amount around every border crossing is only 27km. On the other hand building a wall or even a fence over the whole border seems silly and very expensive. From Imatra to the sea is a relatively short distance 90km. There are 10 border lakes in that distance alone. That would make most sense. 200km huh? That would mean from the sea to Kitee if fence would be in there only. Nevertheless Kymenlaakso and South Karelia counties would be fully fenced!

    What Finland also has to worry about is Russia sneaking separatist in there to try and destabilize ether parts or all of Finland.

    Problem is Russia can’t occupy parts of Finland because it would be considered an attack and instate article 5 of the treaty which would send nato troops into Finland along side Finnish troops

    you are brave to be on the front and stand against joining with tyrants, I am a veteran (1/5 1st Cav.) and please know that the internet as you know it was created long ago by our defense dept., what you have, the cell phone, made long before we had one, my point being is that we are talking about A.I., Quantum computing, Drone Tech. these days and that's just what we know about, how far advanced do you think the United States Of America is at this current time, I assure you my friends we will fight for and next to you, our word is bond, sleep well because with our strength together we can overcome any enemy and may our alliance last into infinity.
