Finland NATO: How Finland will strengthen NATO's border with Russia

- Finland, along with Sweden, has officially been accepted into the NATO alliance.
The small nordic country of just 5.5 million people, which shares an 800-mile border with Russia has reversed decades of neutrality to join the ranks of NATO in a massive blow to Vladimir Putin.
So, what will Finland bring to the alliance?
In this documentary the Sun's Max Molyneux travels to Finland to meet members of their 900,000 strong reservist army, attend a live-fire military exercise with young Finnish conscripts and tour one of the countries largest public nuclear bomb shelters.
Find out Finland has spent decades preparing their country for war and how this readiness will strengthen NATO's northern flank.

There has always been some bond between the US and Finland. There were some US volunteers even in the Winter War, for example John Jack Hasey (Finland awarded him the Liberty Cross) and when the WTC happened the Finnish parliament unanimously voted for joining in the ISAF (Afganistan), they've served around the world in UN, NATO and EU missions. I'm actually surprised Finland didn't join sooner because they've already helped NATO even more than some of its current members.
Intelligent planning and willing conscripts. That’s the way to go. Finns lead the way. Respect guys. From Scotland.
When we leave the UK, maybe we can join the Nordic belt.
@Patrick Bateman I think it had something to do about be in EU for UK voted against but Scotland want's to be in EU .
@Patrick Bateman Just let him/them, get on with it!
@Bin Loony why do you suppose Scotland would have no weapons? Scotland is part of that '[Great] Britain and Northern Ireland' - it has its stake in the armed forces. Much like every other independence movement, the assets (and debts) would be divided amongst the new country and the rest of the country that remains. It's quite daft to think otherwise.
Not to mention, in all likelihood, a newly independent Scotland would retain the monarchy for some time, much like some other Commonwealth countries.

My grandparents on my mother's side were Finns. I grew up with many Finns in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I am part Finn and very proud to have Finnish heritage! Finns are very strong people, something they refer to as Sisu. Sisu is strength of will, determination, perseverance, and acting rationally in the face of adversity. Sisu is not momentary courage, but the ability to sustain that courage. Great people. I am glad they will be joining NATO. Love and respect from an American of Finnish heritage. Stay safe.
As a Finn I would say that you have the best definition to Sisu so far.
"Sisu is strength of will, determination, perseverance, and acting rationally in the face of adversity. Sisu is not momentary courage, but the ability to sustain that courage." Hienosti kiteytetty. Ja kun kaikki muu loppuu, sisukkaalla on yhä sisunsa jäljellä.
I remember a documentary about the Winter War and the guest was explaining Sisu. She said “Not only do we possess Sisu but we also have puukkos. One of these between the ribs does not feel so good” as she gently twirled the blade on the tip of her finger. I needed no further explanation!
@@CFarnwide
A good reminder! The following story is a bit raw. In the North, during the winter war, the battle is fought until dark. Then an order was given that you shouldn't shoot, that you wouldn't hit your own. Only a "puukko" (knife) was allowed to be used. So then there was hand-wringing, and in close contact it was first confirmed that the one being hit was a "ryssä" (Russian) and not a Finn. This is how the battle was won. They were tough Northern men.
@AwareBear Our army would make Russians discover totally new ways of getting yourselves badly hurt if wondering these neighbourhood. Finnish army have trained for last 100 years solely for shooting the bear between eyes.
My respect for Finland grows with each video I see. A disciplined, clear-minded people with a correspondingly well-prepared military. What an asset to NATO they are and what an example to other western countries, including the US, my own home. We can learn much from them today.
Hell yeah!
TY, if you saw our country you'd likely understand both why we are not going to go give it up, and why we are as stubborn and relentless as we are. This video didn't go into much detail really, for obvious reasons, but I'll just say that our defenses are a lot more elaborate than what was covered.
@@noth606 Most of the people I talk to (in the US) know Finland is virtually unbeatable at home.

Very well said, my friend.
The British have been training with the FDF for years now and the respect between the two militaries is immense. I whole heartedly welcome the proud nation of Finland into the NATO family, along with Sweden, both having far more in common with us in our shared values of life than those of the dictatorship of lies behind the iron curtain.
They have no common values - one is self sufficient in all aspects - one cries and hides behind the US - one is in the EU and one does not want to be in the EU so what is the point of being in Nato then.
They stull have to hand over 33 PKK members from Sweden to Turkey before Turkey signs off on the ascension - of course you dis know this Turkey presented a deal and Sweden signed off on it
Comrade - Ukraine last week banded 11 opposition parties - hardly a Multiparty Democracy - you seem to forget - Hungary 56 - Prague 68 - Berlin 45 - mass Murder - Rape - you seem to forget that the Ukrainians were Soviets too. So what happened - hey needed you to give them things for nothing - “Help Me Help You” - next you are going to have to rebuild their entire Rail Network free of course.
@@cliveengel5744 I'm not sure you're entirely on this planet Clive. No shared values? What about moral values, democratic values, human rights values, trade and scientific research. You're uneducated on the matter. NATO differs greatly from the EU, I'm not sure why you're mentioning them in the same sentence. One is a defensive alliance the other is membership into political governance of trade and law. Your clear anti US stance provides answers but while it's sad you have a clear misunderstanding, I find it hilarious you think these countries hide behind the US. Nobody needs to hide behind the US, the fact you diminish the pride and capabilities of nations shows a sincere lack of respect and true understanding.
@@tacticaldelusion Dream on Comrade I am from Boston. You cannot accept any alternate view and analysis and that is why the British lost their Empire by going to War in 1939 in the defense of Poland. After 5 long years of War they never even came to their aid.
It was the Soviet Union that got the job done while the Englanders were messing around in North African and Italy. How did they plan to get into Germany via Italy. They almost missed the War altogether from 1939-1944.
By 1943, the Germans were defeated and in retreat - Battle of Moscow - Volgograd - St Petersburg - Minsk - Vilnius - Tallin - Finland - Kharkiv - Kyiv - Sevastopol - Krakow - Warsaw - Prague - Budapest - Bucharest - Austria - Koenigsberg (Kaliningrad) - Odessa - Lviv - Bulgaria - then Berlin all the way to the Elba. - Then To Sakhalin - Kuril Island - Manchuria. All in a space of 4 years. Tremendous sacrifice - 200 cities destroyed 12-20 million people dead. 8 million Soldiers.
Now I ask you one more time - Englanders did what? 😁
So remind me what the Englanders did in the Great Patriotic War?
So which Planet did you come from Herseyland?

However the elite in Helsinki and Stockholm decided for economic and for future military sales that Nato Membership is the right way to go.
Given the sale of the F-35As to Finland, the contract probably had some conditions written in for Nato membership . They could have procured the Saab Grippens rather.
Saab of Sweden are probably scared of getting excluded from Weapons sales if they did not accommodate Nato and the US.
Since when did Russia ever threaten Sweden other than playing “Hide and Seek” down the inside channel of Gotland Island by Russian Subs.
The US and UK use Nato to push their Anti Russian narrative and the goals of Nato is to war economic war on Russia.
This is from the Helsinki Times from Monday - Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union and dissolution of the Warsaw Pact -- NATO's original betes noires -- in 1991, the alliance has grown like Topsy with new member states located far from the North Atlantic, all while launching or joining in numerous wars of choice in the Balkans, in the Middle East, in Central Asia, and in Africa.
Characterizing NATO as a "collective security" or "defense" coalition these days is pure fiction. It's an alliance for global conquest and US/European hegemony, and that's all it is. The criterion for NATO military intervention is no longer, per Article 5 of its charter, an actual attack on a member state, but rather any refusal -- actual or potential -- to slavishly obey the edicts of the alliance or its heavyweight regimes.
Think what you may of Vladimir Putin's decision to invade Ukraine, his stated concerns about Ukraine potentially joining this violent supranational gang and bringing it right up to Russia's border were completely understandable. That war might have been avoided if not for NATO's obsession with constant expansion.

Getting to see our friends and allies so well prepared gives me a great deal of confidence. I have a lot respect for Finland, and Sweden too. Seeing the way the tradition is around conscription, makes me think it's done the right way and healthy way there.
In America, we also have conscription, but it's not normally used much unless a major conflict (such as a world war) breaks out. In World War II, our numbers swelled to more than 12 Million soldiers total. We can assume that with today's increased population, the U.S. numbers would far surpass that total personnel of force if conscription was ever invoked because of a world war again. But as they say, deterrence is the best policy. There's a quote that goes something like, "If you want peace, you must prepare for war."

Joining NATO for Finland and Sweden is the most stupid thing those countries have ever done. For many years Finland was the number one place for peace between east and west. The country became rich out of the peace. Now Finland will have to spend huge amounts of money on re-equiping its military. Instead of being defensive Finland will need to go on the attack. That requires totally different weapons and training. To defend is always easier than to attack. Many Finns think Russia is a threat and it will be a winter war again, deluded fools who want to fight a modern war with the cannon fodder mentality of WW2. All that has happened is a wedge was driven between Finland and Russia many years before was a beneficial peace that was not there for many, many years. USA wanted sanctions and Finland always paid the price for American policy, all industries were affected. Now Finland will become a land based missile carrier for the USA. Up goes the dollar and down goes the Euro. "Stupid is as stupid does". Western countries went to Iraq, Libya, Syria and Afghanistan and bombed them into the stone age turned their cities to rubble. I do not see that in Ukraine. What I observe is the lack of levelled cities. Russia has the capability to level every city but it does not. An American surgical strike hits hospitals, slaughters innocent civilians and not one f**ing sanction against the great satan America. The west kept pushing Russia and the Russians kept saying we want peace. The west response missiles to the Baltics. Now you see real Russian diplomacy in action. The Finnish economy is already in chaos.

22:28 the MLRS driver says the essential thing:
Soldiers are not superhuman. They are normal people. Like any sane person of any nationality, most of us would be very scared if we were thrown into a real combat, a life-threatening situation. But with a good training, and with service mates supporting each other, one can still do their duty even when scared.
The fact that (according to several polls) Finns are more willing to defend their country, even against an overwhelming enemy than any other western European nationality has less to do with our national charaacter and more with the compulsory military service that has made us, and our parents and grandparents willing to fight for our country.
This is just a hint to the political leaders of those western countries that have abolished conscription.
For me, SISU means the kind of perseverance and subbornness, that you keep on trying, and never give up, even against all odds, even when any positive outcome is very unlikely. In other circumstances, it might even be called stupidity. But this "stupidity" has saved the Finnish independence more than once.
A well known Finnish military march song "Sillanpään Marssilaulu" (lyrics written by a famous author F.E. Sillanpää) describes this determination in a good way. This is the last chorus:
So you children and old people
And you mothers and brides
