    Great Video: Just finished removing the oil pan from my 2000 Dodge Durango. Since I have everything apart I am going to replace the starter. For other viewers just like the video be careful removing the screws from u-joint flange and the rack and pinion screws and use plenty of penetrant. Great Job!!!!!

    This process works for a 2002 3.9L 4x4 Dakota as well. Didn't have to take off axle or tires which was nice. Took 8 hours the first time, less than 2.5 hours the second time. I did have to remove the starter and inspection cover since I didn't remove the front axle. If you remove the front axle, you don't have to mess with the starter or inspection cover. Still easier than my older camaro sadly.

    Just getting done getting oil pan in for 5.2 V8 on Dakota. Took over 10 hours... Had to take off starter, drop axle, drop sway bar, and remove 2 engine support brackets. I've done multiple oil pans, this is by far the most extra and unnecessary work to do a simple oil pan replacement.

  • @itz_gachalina6630
    @itz_gachalina6630 Před 7 lety +1

    hello Charles, I'm working on a 2002 Durango 4.7lt. it's making a knocking noise. I watched your video and have the oil pan,pickup tube,and windage tray removed. I've inspected the bearings, I found play in rods 1,2 and 7,8.I bought new std rod bearings, and gasket kit. I am changing rod bearings with the engine in the vehicle. My concerns are plastigaging and torque specs and the success rate of a repair done in this manner. This is my first time doing this any advice on this?

    • @CharlesAndCars
      @CharlesAndCars  Před 7 lety

      not sure what you mean by "found play".... what you'll probably have a tougher time telling is what kind of shape your wrist pins are in.. I don't know the torque specs off the top of my head but just google and you'll be able to find the torque sequence and specs for tightening the rod caps. As for the plastigauge.... Unless you're a machine shop ... that's how you'll be checking the clearance... done it many times.... if you're within clearance you should be fine. Without pulling the motor out and taking it to a machine shop to get it checked plastigauge is the way to go.

    • @CharlesAndCars
      @CharlesAndCars  Před 7 lety

      If you've already got the parts then plastigauge it and if it clearances out okay, run it... If you still have another issue you'll be able to hear it... it's kind of a balance between 1. spending a lot of money to pull the motor and either replace it or send it out to a machine shop to have it gone through or 2. Replacing the bearings (if the crank looks good... I'm assuming you're crank hasn't been gouged/worn due to the bearings) ... a lot less money and very possible could work out fine for you.

    • @CharlesAndCars
      @CharlesAndCars  Před 7 lety +1

      You don't have to lift the engine... lower the front axle and unbolt the rack and pinion from the frame. This will give you the clearance you need to get the pan out.

    • @CharlesAndCars
      @CharlesAndCars  Před 7 lety +1

      I'm not sure if that''s a two piece seal on that engine or not I believe it is. If so, you can get a seal puller, drop the main cap and use the puller to pull the upper half of the seal out (You may be able to just push the upper half of the seal out without a seal puller as well)... Then slide the new one in... I haven't done it in that way, but I know it's been done many many times... make sure you seal the seams on the two piece seal. If you google ... "replace 2 piece rear main seal without dropping crank" you'll find tons of examples...

    The steering jack doesn't come out until you pull a torsion bar off either. They never made it easy to clean your oil pick up ha ha. I don't know why they never fitted a port in the pan.
