Add a 99 cent "Power ON" Indicator light for your Spektrum Dx6i TX. Easy to Do.

- I knocked my DX6i on the floor! Broke 2 switches! I decided, since I have left this TX on more times than not, to put in a "Power ON" light in too. Then I tested it on Blacklight MCX.
No strap would help me not drop it, as I knocked it off the bench, when I wasn't even using it.
The Power on LED is so I can see from a distance if I left the TX on, not to try to read the screen.
I don't need to read my screen after I am done flying. You can't see it when night flying anyway.
I opened up the Spektrum DX6i, replaced both switches, and added a 3.5-3.7 Volt LED indicator from Radio Shack.
The voltage on the Spektrum is 6v nominal, so any 6 volt LED will work.
Any smaller size, then simply put a 100 ohm resister in series with the LED and it will work fine.
Make sure to put the LED negative Lead to ANY black wire in the radio. I used the black wire right off the battery pack.
Then simply find where the positive turns on and off with the power switch.
Find a place that is easy to solder the + lead from the LED to. You can see where I did it in this video on mine.
Make sure no wires are interfering with any stick action and put the back back on.
This may or may not void any warranties, but was a necessity to me.
Hopefully, in the future models, Spektrum will add lights like most other Transmitter Manufacturers have become accustomed to doing.
Thanks for watching and Happy "NightFlyying.

Hi Dave,
I am an 80 year old "Newbie" just getting into flying RC helicopters and planes, and I have watched several of your videos. You are obviously a very talented and experienced guy. I really appreciate you sharing all that talent and expertise.
I will be subscribing, and hoping to learn and enjoy more of your great video help. Many Thanks.
Dave, you rock bud. Using a servo screw driver to mod a DX6i is just pure class.
Outstanding. Great Tutorial Sir. I was able to goto a electronics hardware store and
$36 bucks later. 15 leds (5 colors @ 3 of each), 15 clear led caps and a 100 ohm resistor and Boom 1 Blue power Led. I truely thank you.

Dave you always have a cheeky look on your face at the end of your vids lol lov it!
No, I'm not upset or anything, honestly. I've been looking up on how including some subliminal messages in a youtube vid can somehow boost it's viewcount, which would be helpful. I wasn't sure if you were doing that, or just including a funny, signature closer type deal.
Let me remind you, I love all your videos, especially the night-flying ones :) I NEED to get back into RC hobbies! I also appreciate all the good deals you post here, and your ads don't piss me off like most peoples do, haha.
Cant wait to see you take the MSR for a spin!!!Good luck to Jeff this little bugger is going to be a tuff one to film. Its fast!!
dave you are one of the most ingenious ! all the little tricks that you do and i use makes me look good! lol awesome work keep it up sir. p.s. really hope to meet you some day ! Semper Fi and god bless
wooah I could never have the guts to open my beauty! Very nice idea Dave 5*****
Great to see you working. I have learned a lot. Thanks! BoB
I've done this many time to my other transmitters.....just haven't done it to my DX6i yet. done it to some other units too. Too bad Radio Shack isn't in town anymore. Great video!!!
Jeff your video is really pleasant to watch.
In your descriptions you should not say 20mA an hour or per hour.
The usefull unit in this case is the instantaneous consumption, and that is the intensity in A, then mA in such a LED case.
And if that is 20 mA, I think this is far not negligeable since my DX6i draws no less than 35mA in normal mode and 20mA in sim mode.
So with that in mind, one can quickly imagine that the batteries will last shorter, since for example in sim mode, you'd double the current consumption.
There are some super bright blue or other agressive colour LED that can be seen as well as your red one (I really believe) while drawing only 1 mA.
Again, nice tuto.
Awesome vid Dave!!
Great page, liked and subbed!!
i made one of those skrewdriver and i have to say it works great. thanks for that video.
hehe, nice flying with the MCX! it looks sweet with the glowing parts :)
An LCD backlight is another good option and is a must for this transmitter. I don't know how I managed so long without it, plus the LCD light reminds me to turn my transmitter off.
Posted video response with my DX6i backlight kit for you DAVE. If you have any question feel free to ask, It would be an honor to help you out for a change since you have help me so much.
Awesome idea. Good music!
nice vid again dave well done
I think it would have looked better to put the LED on the dot of the "i" in DX6i, but it still looks great! Outstanding vid!
Excellent-excellent tutorial. Next, let's see a vid for the Drop Protect accessory. This is a contact sensor at the neckstrap loop, such that when the neckstrap is disconnected it turns on the antigravity module. Then when the user accidentally bumps the radio off the bench it will not fall to the ground but simply hang in midair awaiting retrieval. (See Spektrum accessory antigravity module part number SPM33497.)
nice video dave, very clever idea, and you're right, i would have ever thought of seeing you drill into you DX6i. anyway nice video (as usual).
Great Idea Dave I definitely think it needs a light. I have left it on twice and had to send it to Horizon to be reset after it entered backup error. I think Horizon would replace the switches free of charge also. but I know how you love tinkering with stuff. Anyway I need a light but don't want to void the warranty. Great work!
@jphysco ,
Go to any sportbike motorcycke shop, and they usually carry these pliers. We use them to safety wire our bikes for the race track.
wow very cool, that is really impressive.
I really want one of these!!!
no idea how i got to this video ... but its cool none the less! =D
great idea!
Great idea! Cool man space too! and that is awesome with the night flying going on there! Where did you get that handy dandy palm screwdriver??
excellent videos, thanx so much for all the info, it has helped me to be a better heli pilot.
I have a blade 400 that crashed due to a malfunctioning dx6i, which horizon hobby gave me a brand new rtf and repaired my tx. so now i have two blades.
your video on head repair for the 400 was so helpfull.
Have you used the 5 star cnc head for the blade yet ? If so could you do a vid on tightening the slop in feathering shaft, as this head uses rubber bushings.
Thanx again for all your work.
Great idea. Where did you but the snap in lens cover. I check everywhere without success. Thanks!
Hi Dave, great video and i'm liking that mod. I was just wondering if you've got any advice as i have a Futaba T6EX and the ON/OFF slide switch is quite loose, it has come on a couple of times in my bag and has left me with a flat Tx that is very annoying when you get up the slope! Have you got any modification ideas to improve this switch..? thank you!
Nice to know. Thank you!
Thats Cool!!!
I Noticed you have a Msr in the background, what do you like better, the Mcx or the Msr?
I am going to do this when I get a Dx6i!
Nice transmitter
I broke gear and rudder switches. Wondering where i can get similar switch and model no if possible.
Dave I can't seem to find the video were you describe how to make that power screw driver. Anyone??
what type of switch would i need to replace my trainer switch on my Dx6i is it something i could probably find at my local radio shack? kewl power on light as well.
Their are backlight LCD kits available and you could see the screen when you NIGHT FLY.
Hey Dave, What's the metal loop in the center of the TX for??
LOL!
I dropped mine...
...once!
way to go dave good one ever figure out how to go half rate on the blue ray 450 tail servo?
Very smart. But are you able to tell me something? I have converted Spektrum DX6i from Mode 2 to Mode 1 and when I tried to test fly my heli I found that the main rotor trims have changed. When I accelerate the rotor for lift-off, the servos are behaving out of order. Upon speed increase the main rotor tends to pull left as seen from behind the heli, and when I decrease speed the rotor tends to pull right as it stops. Also affected is the stabilizer bar. In other words, the swash plate is not flat on stand-by and as I increase the revolution speed the right side of the bar tends to lift up and the left side and lower itself. Something has gone wrong with the heli, despite that the DX6i working properly wit the conversion but I don't seem to know if it has also affected the dual rate or, what do you call it when a heli flies upside down with the use of the Mix Switch? Do you know the reason the DX6i and the Blade 400 are now enemies? So much said about doing your own conversion and then there are unexpected problems with the operation of the heli servos. But I wonder why did they do 2 Modes, why not stick with one Mode and that is Mode 1 because of it's simplicity. Are they going to make another Mode so even dogs can learn how to fly with a new RC called Mode Finger? It would probably be my last time I will ever buy a Spektrum. Their customer service is really disappointing. :-(
Great video. Very helpfull for us noobs. Finding switches for spektrum transmitters can be a hastle, but Futuba have some that fit. FUTM3676 works well. It's shorter, but it works. In my case it was the Trainer.
is thear a way to switch from right to left hand throttle on this transmitter because i have been using the standerd controls that cum with the mcx but now that i have a dx6i icant get used to the controls so if u can help me pls respond
Do you have like Glow in the Dark Spray???? It was ALL glowing in the backround in the end...
where did you get the LED? Did it come with the resistor already on it? Nice job! I do wish the DX6i had a back lit screen.
how did u make the servo drill it is cool
make a video of the servo drill plz do one
@jflessne
even i liked the tool.the name of the video is"Make Electric Screw Drivers from R/C servos"
was watching your video and saw a tool i've not seen in awile and was wondering where you got your safety wire plier's?
Anyone know how to do this to JR XP9303?
Yeah, whatever you call it, lol. I noticed that on a few of your later videos. Is it actually helping?
Jeff you should patent that high speed servo mini screwdriver. I've watched you use that on a bunch of your videos... Great video by the way and thanks for the tip ..
Yea that thing is great:)
i agree Dave MSR review would be great!!! I would get one but I just got a Walkera cb100 and gott save up again, but would love your opinion on it!! ( I really trust your judgement.
Thanks Eric.
what is that yellow button on the top left of your transmitter?
cool!!!!!!!!! nice
Thanks i wish i was able to get a pair whean i got out of the navy. BTW im an AT myself
where did u get that srewdriver thingy from?
does this effect the warranty?
Hey Dave im looking for a beginner plain thats fairly cheap got any ideas?
is the amazing goop anything like shoe goo? I've seen you use it in all of your vodeos. :D I haven't seen amazing goop anywhere here, but I can get shoe goo.
what is that yellow stuff stickin onto your dx6i?
thanks a bunch daqve my lhs said they couldnt get them andi would have to shio it out 6 weeks and no flying nio way lol !
Are those chargers on your wall? Our cu-koo clocks are almost identical.
:)
great mod dave,i could never understand why the dx6i has no power on lights, all my car based txs have power on leds etc. ive also left mine on with a brand new set of top brand batterys in it 3 times.
You could maybe find it at radio shack or you could get one at your LHS and that will be an exact match
PS I bought the Blade MSR BNFly, I love it, you should check it out, flies quite stable and quick :-)
put them near / in / around the screen so you can actually read without any other lights :P
Great idea Dave, I love my two DX6i too. I had a problem with the trim tabs breaking, Horizon Hobby were great with sending me some new ones to replace, but I found some machined aluminum ones from East RC. they work great and probably will never need replacing, check out my trim tabs repairs video :-)
is that a servo?
0:55
at 7:58 is that the new MSR?
i wouldn't do this because you have the lcd if the lcd is on then its on unless the lcd shows when its off
i love mine too..the only thing i hate is that theres no power light i leave mine too sometimes ill be doing this aswell thanks..
also the trim buttons break easy on this dx6i they have cheap plastic on the trim switches i had to fix one..CA glue wont work you have to use paper clip drill a hole on the center on the trim leg then put paper then bond with CA then wrap a string.
good grief excuse my night typing lol lol
8:05 really tripy man
Could be retitled "The hardest way to find switched 6 volts". Right under the RF module, solder dots just begging to be warmed up.
Why not use a super-bright LED and mount it behind the LCD display? Then it could act as a backlight.
page 6, appendix A to be exact
MSR review pleeeease?
help please, I accidentally power'd my spektrum dx5e today backwards, now it just does the startup beeping continuously! has something broke just because
a reverse polarity fault? damn!!!!! im not gunna throw it.
im sure you shorted out alot of things, nothing you can do about that
yes i shorted out the dx5e months ago, now im using turnigy 9xr and it does have less range fact. im gunna make a video about it, it can loose link at around 500m or less sometimes. my dx5e never lost link at 500m.
@jphysco i also have one and cost me 2$or so,
you also have it in hobbyking
oh man that mustve been painful
Done that my self, but I stubbed my toe on the chair it was sitting on. Nothing broke though. I got lucky.
That small electric screwdriver you were using is the cats ass. Please tell me Dave what brand and name. Thanks.
Whats up with the subliminal messages at the end??
I like to watch your videos Dave. Thank you and Jeff.
Could you please tell me the names of the songs from 6:34 and 7:47 till the end. Thanks.
@lukey546, it's a servo without potantiometer and modified gear so that turns 360 degrees. It already own it's power suplly (cells). It's made by Mr.Dave. He was invented it many years ago while the power screwdrivers were not common.
now its a do6i :P
You shouldve put the light on the dot of the i
make MSR vid!!!
better fit a turnigy backlight in the LCD looks a lot better without drilling into your set
i broke some switches to lol never fixed it tho
i know here in ajax it poured bad! :l
cant you just look at the screen
If you're going to the trouble of splicing the coating off a power wire to solder another wire, you might as well just cut it completely. This enables you to slide heat shrink over it to better protect the exposed wire than just ducttape. I understand the whole mantra that cutting it ruins the integrity... but you just soldered it!!! There's no major difference in impedance between cutting and resoldering versus keeping intact and soldering.

another reason I dont buy used electronics...
