Power ON Light for DX6i. Why and how.

  • **I bought*** a 3rd Spektrum Dx6i, which is the same as my others only this one has DSMX technology.
Since there are no backlights or on lights on the transmitter, I found myself several times leaving the Transmitter on after a night flying session. I made a video similar to this before over 2 years ago and many asked me to tell the value of the resistor and LED, and show better where to hook up the power, so the reason I am doing this now.
My logic is based on Fuzzy Algorithms, and I know many also will tell me to buy a backlight to put behind the screen, but this is expensive at between $45 and $150 and still I can't see it from a few feet away in the dark!
Open up the Spektrum DX6i and add a 3.5-3.7 Volt LED indicator from Radio Shack.
The voltage on the Spektrum is 6v nominal, so any 6v volt LED will work.
But any smaller size, simply put a 100 ohm resister in series with the LED and it will work fine. This is a 3.7 Volt LED I am using.
Make sure to put the negative to ANY black wire in the radio. I used the black wire right on the lower plug.
Then simply solder the + lead to the red wire on the same plug. You can see where I did it in this video.
Make sure no wires are interfering with any stick action and put the back on.
This may or may not void any warranties, but was a necessity to me after leaving it on so many times.
Thanks kindly for all your support. I would appreciate if you would please take a moment rate the video, subscribe to be notified when I produce another RC Television show, and if you know of others that would like to see this video, please pass it on.
    Best Regards,

I'm spoiled and bought myself a 9503 a year or so back, even with the fancy back light I still sometimes forget to turn it off. Helpful and practical, thanks for another great how to.

What a great idea! Can't tell you how many times I've left the Tx on. I figured "well, at least it's only 4 batteries instead of 8 to replace!!" This is one mod I'll definitely do.
    Thank's again Herb !!

Dave, I used your LED power on on my DX6i. Thanks for the tip. The backlight panel prices are cheaper than you think. Only $15.50. I installed mine from 2 parts ordered from Ebay. First, the "EL Lamp electroluminescent panel" was $9.50 and second the "USB 5V DC to AC inverter EL Lamp Foil Wire electroluminescent" was $6. For $15.50 (shipping included), it's worth it. The seller is abakuscom. There are videos on CZcams describing the installation.

Thanks Dave! I did nearly the same thing as you but without the lens after watching your first video. If I remember correctly I found a 3.5v source on one of the unused plugs so I could skip the resistor. I just wanted to talk you again for your great videos. Hats off to you.

Just did this mod, and I want to give you a big thanks because I was constantly leaving my DX6i on and killing my batteries.
However, one point of fact. I used the exact LED and resistor in your video from Radio Shack (276-320 and 271-152) and they are no longer $.99. In fact, the LED costs $5.99 and the resistor (pack of 2) costs $1.49. I had to order the Lens cover that cost $.39 each. So overall it costs about $7.87 or a little over $8 with tax. But either way well worth it for me.

I just might try this. I finally had to open mine up to replace the antenna ( yeah, I know: "Never drop your TX") It was easy!
They should have named the new version the DX6x. I'm sure it would have been a 6x... (sorry)
