Installing an EL panel as backlight in DX6i Transmitter.
I followed the excellent directions posted here -
www.helifreak.com/showthread.p...
Backlight purchased from HobbyKing (see update at top of description) -
www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/st...
I did a few things wrong such as not marking the LCD position and not using 3m tape (didn't realize I didnt have any until I'd started), as such the screen is a little bit off, but I'll fix that when I get the right tape.
The advertised current draw for the backlight is 60~90mA which is pretty minimal. I have not noticed a decrease in time between charges, but I always charge well before I get a low voltage alarm. - Jak na to + styl
I'm 63, new to the sport of RC electric flying. Eyes are not so good these days. Bought a DX6i but could not see the display in late evenings. This young man didn't have to say a word, followed his video to the T and my blue turnigy 9x display works great.. bright, display is level. Not sure why some would be afraid to remove the ribbon... just use the right tools for the job! I had a fair soldering station, fair glue gun, set of small screwdrivers. Took a photo with my iPhone to make sure the connectors were put back in the factory slots. Just pause the video, follow each step and you CAN'T mess this one up! Going to do another one tomorrow... bought another DX6i for my grandson! Best video on installing a backlight that I have seen!
Well, I can't find the right words to adequately thank you for making this video. I bought this light kit almost a year ago. The kit did not come with any installation manual. I tried to install it by reverse engineering the factory one in my dx6i but no luck. I got frustrated and put the kit away until now. Your video was clear and up close enough and easy to follow. Mega thanks pal.
After 5 years still the BEST Instructional Video!!!!
Great tutorial! I followed the video instructions exactly as shown and now my DX6i works as advertised. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Very much appreciated.
No thanks needed. Great to always see more Dx6i owners doing it. Since your not a member, I'll put it up so there will now be a visual reference as well! Thanks again!
Just finished mine using the Turnigy blue backlight kit. Looks awesome! And for the tape I used 2 x 3M 1 inch mounting squares. Thanks for a great vid and thanks to Tim from the Helifreak forums! It really amazes me that the DX6i and DX7 do not have backlights factory installed.
I just installed my backlight kit today by following this video. Everything worked out perfectly. Now I have a nice green backlight. Thanks for posting this informative video.
PERFECT!
This is amazing how much better it makes the screen. So good!
Thanks for the video. I just got done backlighting two DX6i's. One blue and one green. Both turned out AWESOME. Lining up the main screen was easier than I thought. Just lined the top of the main screen up with the top of the LED panel and then lined the top of those with the top of the circuit board and centered the main screen up with the two lines on the circuit board and it was right on.
Excellent tuto, just did it and it works great. many thanks as well to the initial helifreak tuto.
Thank you very much. Your video was very helpful. Took me only 10 minutes to make the modification. But I didn't glue the LCD, I just put 2 pieces of 2 sided tape to both ends as I saw in another video. Works also very well and no danger to put glue on the LCD.
Just finished mine last night. Thanks so much for the video!
Awesome tutorial video. I need to get the DX6i first but plan on the mod when I do. I like the idea of the connecting it to the beeper with an off delay timer.
thanks so much for making this video. Looks fairly easy to do. I have wanted to do this for a while now and im putting in an order to HK soon so i might as well get this as well. I will watch your video again when i do it and take my time with it. Thanks once again. Im sick of not being able to see my screen down the park. I have the autotimer mod already and its great.
Thanks for the walk through. Worked the first time. Only thing I did different was to keep the ribbon cable connected. It's easier to move the charge plug from its slot.
Hey thanks for the tutorial man... I was reading from some hobbyking forum instruction of how to do backlight screen....its confusing as hell. Your instructional video is so much easier ! thankyou once again, cheers.
I was a little leary on this mod, because of this video, it looks like TURNIGY sold another back light. AWESOME VIDEO!
Thank you for your time making this video.
I finish mine!!
Excellent tutorial. Thanks for posting this.
I will follow suit now that I know it can be done without much expense.
Loving this! The DX6i *really* should have had a backlight, even if it was just a couple LEDs. Thanks so much!
Thanks tons! I did the mod today, and it worked out great, also in the comments someone stated you should not detach the ribbon from the LCD screen. I couldn't agree more. There is no need to remove the ribbon. You are only causing trouble if you do.
Great video. Some narration would have helped a bit but the high def really helped out. I utilized the adhesive pad to attach the led light to the pcb so I could avoid all the hot glue it would require. The light does not sit flush on the pcb due to the pins that are protruding. I also did not detach the ribbon cable to avoid any complications. Works great. Thanks again.
i did it a year ago and my dx6i looks great with the blue light
Thanks, this was very helpful and informative. I just did mine according to this video and it works great!
Bravo!
I just got done doing mine and it looks awesome!
If your watching this vid thinking I cant do this,You can! If I can do it,im certain everyone else can as well. Between this vid and his link with the pics,Its not a problem at all. The hardest part for me was unplugging the wire clips, some of those was a PITA but other then that smooth sailing. Great vid!
worked great..just finished my fourth one.
Nicely done!
Great video. Thanks tons. Took me 20mins to do the mod..
Thank you very much for the video!!! Just finished mine,,, it was a breeze thanks to you.. :)
Thanks for the easy tutorial man, I now have me a blue backlight. :)
@sNstRflyEr There is one quick video of my first flight with my 450 from last year... I'm still learning, will make some more as I progress but that might be a while !
Thanks for the walk through. Works great.
With the back light under the LCD, and the ribbon connector for the LCD being at the bottom, then the black wire from the back light should be at the bottom.
9:17 in the video shows it. Also the first link in the description has a very well written tutorial (which is what I followed to make the video) and he has a photo of it too.
Thanks (and thank you for making the directions). I have not posted the video in that thread - I'm not a member and wasn't sure about how the group would see me making an account just to advertise my own video.
Double check orientation of the connectors with the photos on the forum (link in description).
If that still looks OK then I'd disconnect and reconnect everything.
hi just finished this mod. and i had the same prob. try switching the 2 plugs on the lower right corner of the screen board. the mix plug &the one next to it. worked for me. hope it helps
It draws very little power. Batteries will not last as long because there is still an extra drain, but I have not noticed a decrease in time between charges myself.
Yeah, the light is connected to the Power switch circuit board. Someone posted about a month ago that it worked on the DX7, but I'm not familiar with it.
Fckn legend.. Just finished mine. It took as long as your vid... Awesome!!
Firstly, an excellent video version of the directions I posted on Helifreak! Glad someone had the time to make a video of it! Did you post a link of this vid on the thread? If not,...please do so that everyone can have both a visual and scripted reference which makes the whole installation even easier! Once again...great job!
nice job, thx for this beautiful tutorial
The white connector attaches to a PCB which is required by the light. You could duplicate the components on the PCB in your wiring, but I didn't see the need to do that and just kept the connector.
Just did mine after watching this, Thanks!
I'm sure it could be done, but I'm happy with it being connected to the main on/off switch and as the additional battery drain is negligible I don't see much benefit to adding to the complexity of this. However If you do it that way, I'd be interested to see it.
Cat got your tongue? Although I do appreciate that you did not use some obnoxious and loud musical sound track, I kept waiting through the entire video for you to SAY at least "something". :)
Thanks! I've always wished my DX6i had a backlit screen. This looks easy to do.
It's a Dremel, just tried to find it on their website and its not listed and Amazon says they are unavailable so I think they were discontinued. I got it from a family member a while ago, I like it a lot.
Thanks for the video. I am getting ready to do mine. One tip to pass back, though. Get rid of the 1500mah batteries supplied with the radio and get a set of the 2300mah AA's. That way you get more battery life ;)
Dude: Two words---- Magnetic Screwdriver.
Cool video,
Thanks for posting.
Just installed my backlight by using this video nice one ;)
Yes, you can, and it's the most clean and clever way to do this.
You just cut them and throw away that white connector and stuff.
BUT you have to put a 470 ohm resistor on one of the 2 cables (the white connector little panel comes with a 470 ohm connector on it). So you're safe and done. My technician made it this way :) Less stuff around.. better work.
You'd at least need a longer EL Panel because the display is a different shape. I had a quick look but couldn't find any directions on what to use online.
Glad I could help !
PERFECT! Thanks for the video. Mine worked out great thanks to you ;)
Very good Video, now I can modify my old DX6i too... Thanks..!
LOL, you have a DX6I and no RC videos. Hmmmmmm. Great tutorial, thanks for the upload.
I don't know if you could, but I wouldn't want to because then you'll have an extra circuit board you'll need to secure inside the transmitter.
I tried the helifreak link last night when I got this message and it looks like the site was just down, it works now.
Great vid! I'm wanting to do this backlight to dx7s do you think it would be about the same process? Your wiring that directly to the tx on switch right. Thanks a bunch!
Did my grandsons DX6i and he now has a blue backlight that he loves (that got grandpa a few points). There is only one thing I can say when doing this. If you align the display up with the very top of the board on the TX, once glued in and installed, I had to trim the two little fins at the bottom of the case because the display was just a hair bit low when I glued it to the board.. I would say try to keep the top of the display 1/8th inch above the circuit board when gluing the backlight to the circuit board.. It's not a big deal because those two center fins are small so just used a pair of side cutters and cut them flush with the case... they have no purpose and only stick up a little under 1/8th of a inch. Other than that on both that I did (yes forgot to raise the display a bit above the board on my grandsons too) they were easy to do. Also do not use a soldiering iron that is above around 650 degrees, I would suggest if you have never soldiered anything, maybe have someone soldier the two wires for you. If you drip soldier onto the pins that are pretty close.. you will have a mess.. not to scare anyone from trying it but if you have a hot iron, let it heat until it just melts the soldier on the roll then quickly do the first wire, shut off the iron and let it cool to cold, then do the second wire the same way. Great Video !!!
Did they mention how much or any other specifics. I've not heard of them doing this and cannot find any mention of it on either the spektrum website or any forums.
I actually skipped the connector part and soldered the wires direct, works perfect, the only time it will cause you grief is if you plan to take your radio apart often.
Thanks for the video. Worked perfectly.
Great! Tutorial. Much better with this led kit. Thanxs
No difference that I've been able to notice. The power used is very small (I should have measured it before installation, but forgot), so I think the only way to tell would be if you always waited until your TX batteries were pretty much fully depleted, but I and most others probably charge them well before that.
I thought about the toggle switch, but then I didn't know where to put it and the risk of making a mistake didn't seem worth it due to the low drain.
The pesky ones I will pry up a little from each side going back and forth raising each edge a little bit at a time (Tweezer are good for that).
You got me right in the middle of doing just that! I am starting to re do the disconnect and reconnect. BTW, has there been any problems with the ribbon that's connected to the screen ? Thanks
Nice video, thanks. The HeliFreak thread link does not work however. One question, could you just solder the red and black wires coming from the light panel?
Hi! Thanks for the video. Do you know if this kit would work for dsx9?
Could you please explain by what process/technology it does produce light and I will correct my video by deleting the 2 letters.
First off thanks , this is best vid for a DIY IMO ...only thing I can add is DO NOT remove the ribbon I did mine without removing the ribbon ......no need to remove it and that's the part most people mess up on..!
I would think it would only flicker on when the beeper beeps unless you put in a timer circuit. I saw one that had the circuit installed but when I looked at doing it - the circuit takes more power than just leaving the LED lit. There is almost no drain on the battery from the light. It is just LED. I have been running mine for hours with the simulator and haven't charged my batteries yet.
would be very slick to put a new tiny toggle on the side to flip the backlight on and off. What is the current draw on the light, have you noticed any runtime differences ? Great vid btw
I bought a small, clip-on l.e.d. lite for $5. saved me the time and aggravation.
do the tx batteries seem to go down fast with this added light?
Your plugs came out MUCH easier then mine !!! Great mod though...
Just did this mod. Works like a charm. Thanks. I notice the +/- is important. On the first attempt I got it wrong by soldering on "ON" and "SW" on the opposite side and no backlight. 2nd attempt I desolder and resolder the +/- the other way round and this time everything works perfectly I suppose the resistor is sensitive to the current direction? (Am not comp eng or electronic train) LOL.
+Tommy Morris The one bit of info I needed!
There is a green back light panel and a blue light available. I installed the green which looks good in low light (inside) but in bright outdoor lighting I can't see that it's even on.
Is the blue light better for outdoors and especially in the sun?
hey just wondering what happens when you connect it to the beeper ? and also will this backlight drain the energy of the battery faster ?
thanks for the info; i figured the drain would be negligible; if i do the mod I'll take the measurements and post 'em. I'm sure the data sheet probably has the info also.
Thanks again, great job. 73 de ke7vzw
Which is negative and posative i wat to eliminate that stepid connector. Thanks
Hello I was just wondering with this back light will it drain the battery quickly ?
It's the "Dremel Glue Gun", It's pretty good.
My first few videos with audio didnt work out well, so I removed it and just use annotations now. Maybe someday....
Sorry, I reversed leads from light.... Works great!!!
Ok, so I just did this same mod and now I am not getting any sound or beeping from the DX6i? Has anyone else experienced this same issue? I plugged all the cables back. Am I missing something?
Seeing this is becoming so popular, why does not Spektrum just factory install backlights?
hi how do you get them "balance charger style" connectors out so easily? im having a really hard time dis-connecting them :(
hello, the reflex foil remains on display or have it off?
Thanks
hello what size 3m tape should i use?
Well.... I found the problem! During the install I damaged the wire ribbon attached to screen. Now I have to find a screen to replace it! Do you know anyone selling parts?
This can be done without soldering on a turnigy 9x backlight. The ones thatbare being sold as plug and play are just 9x backlight rewired. Any one can do this, Just have to swap the wires on the backlight conectors and also from switch board.
Hello, I just installed the turnigy and I was very careful not to be in a rush and after completing the step by step instructions my screens color (green) came on, but no lcd (words) are seen at all? Menu rolls and beeps, but nothing too look at which is the main reason for the screen. The ribbon is in place and the other connections have been triple checked, do you have any idea of the problem?
Thanks, Todd
Can somebody tell me something. I want to buy it to control some nitro car. Is its left stick full throtle or half is throtle and second half is reverse if you undertsand me.(mod 2).
Thanks!
Can double sided tape be used instead of hot glue..??
Nice video! Question: the light stay on all the time or turn off?
It's on whenever the transmitter is on.
I didn't notice a difference in battery time.
My dx6i doesn't turn back on after doing this, any ideas why? I did everything like him and dit just doesn't work anymore
I meant 470 ohm resistor, not connector!
No voice ?
What is the name brand of your glue gun?
