Marine AC maintenance

  • This video address’s the maintenance of a marine air conditioning system. Most AC systems on boats exchange the heat generated during the cooling process with incoming sea water. The problem is that over a long hot summer the lines supplying that cooling water become clogged with mud and bio-matter. Here is the way you clean out the system and keep that cool air coming.

I applaud you being able to do this one handed! 😊. I find it hard enough without having to hold a camera. Nice job on the video...easy to follow and understand! ⛵️⛵️

I’ve not seen a maintenance video for boat AC. Thanks!

Might I suggest some lamps. They make for a better viewing. On the other hand, you arm is constantly in the way of suject. And get farther away from the subject marterial. Lights, lights, lights…..

Two things I noticed... 1: your hoses should have double hose clamps at each connecting point.
2: your sea strainer does not appear to be bonded. You should run a ground wire to the ships bonding strap to reduce corrosion.

The cap for the strainer should be HAND TIGHT. Using a pin wrench to tighten it is why the mount
cracked from the bulkhead. Hand tight is MORE than sufficient to cap the strainer

Thanks Kevin. I did not know that. So many times you just want to fix it that you don't think about getting a new one.

hey I used to work for groco that appears to be one of those strainers if you give them a call you can get a new drain plug they are not that expensive they're located in Stevensville Maryland most everything they sell is made in America the casting for your strainer was cast in Lancaster Pennsylvania and Miss CNC machine in Maryland the plastic Bowl was also made in Maryland at a place that does injection molding as well as your drain plug call and ask for John Cly

only an ammeter uses silicone below the waterline. also, looks like you have a real problem with stray current, as green as that strainer is.

Great video captain Steve. I just moved up from a 28' to a 32' cruiser, the AC is working on the new boat but seems to be kinda weak. What would you suggest for troubleshooting? The boat is a 2000 model cruiser yacht.

I removed and cleaned the strainer, but now I'm getting a high pressure lockout message on unit, any ideas of what that might be?

lack of air or water flow. check air filter and coil for dust and check if seacock is opened all the way check if underwater pick up isn't clogged. if you've already fixed it what did you find wrong? fan blades can get really dusty and not move enough air also.

Anybody can make a youtube video although many shouldn't, including him. Then again anybody can take a 380 question test and walk around calling themselves Captain too. I took that test twice and I don't do it (sorry pet peeve of mine). Where's your ship Captain? That's just a little boat you are driving....Anyway that is a mag drive pump as you said and I can't imagine it have any effect to run water through it. We usually don't run it through it but just out of convenience, and sometimes we actually do. The tolerances in the pump are so loose the water can just blow by the impellor or God forbid the impellor will spin (wait doesn't it usually spin, huh?). IMO nonsense. It is possible you could blow some garbage into the impellor I guess, but the water itself has no ill effect. I will ask my pump distributor anyway because I am curious.Incidentally what he did will do nothing about barnacles, mussels, and the like except perhaps clean off their shells. He forgot to mention that.Maybe he should put two hose clamps on all his below waterline hoses as required.Maybe he shouldn't just stuff that obviously decayed little plug in with some silicone and buy a new one for around $5, but hey your boat man...Barnacles don't grow in standing water as he said, the water has to move.Plastic baskets are affected by seawater?? Stainless ones rust. Pick whichever they both work, and expect to replace every few years (plastic or stainless) as they both suck. But gold or platinum would probably be too expensive.
    Rant complete-

i agree that this guy is a hack. running water through a system designed for constant water flow does nothing unless its very high pressure and run backwards from the normal flow. i find that only a vinegar soak over night or diluted muriatic acid circulating for 30 minutes then flushed are the only ways to clean out a system, and i always leave the pump hooked up, never once had a problem in 25 years of doing this professionally. as for double clamping, its preferred but not required on anything but propane and fuel hoses. I'm systems creified and i have yet to come across something that mandates that hoses be double clamped below the waterline. abyc may have changed that since my certification, but i haven't seen it.
