- Everyone has experienced the nightmare when your air conditioner decides to stop working when you need it most. Add insult to injury, it seems like everyone is currently experiencing a heatwave, and some places are breaking record temperatures everyday, like down here in the Florida Keys. Well, my 1 year old Marinaire marine air conditioner recently stopped working in the middle of the afternoon on my boat. Not good! However, this is not my first rodeo, and I addressed the situation with the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) method. In this video I discuss what the problem was and how to fix it. If you have ever wanted to know how to acid treat your boat's air conditioner, I give you step by step directions on how to do so. I also discuss what to look out for and how to monitor the performance of your air conditioner so you can keep your boat nice and cool all summer long.

Going against the grain is a bold move Captain... while everyone else heads north to escape heat/hurricanes you go south and get amazing slips in amazing Keys locations and just deal calmly with the challenges that come with it.

Well done Captain - as a retired HVAC service manager I watched with interest - you did an excellent job creating and describing the whole process - it would have taken considerable time. A hint for other owners of similar vessels might be to create maintenance log of tasks completed and due. Regards down under

Damn did this bring back alot of memories lol. Was a little more cramped on my Morgan but doable. Did this procedure once a month during the summer on mine just to keep it cooling well. Great video my friend.

Hey Butch, Great video. Had to do this procedure many times on our 44, especially down in the Keys. One thing that you m might consider next time you are hooked up for a clean out is to hook up the pump/bucket just past the shutoff at the sea chest and run the Barnacle Buster through your sea strainer and all the valves in your a/c water manifold. As you saw, you can get stuff growing anywhere in the system....even in the ball valves. Your engine room looks great!

Lots of great information again! Just a note that those white/blue pvc ball valves in the raw water cooling system under the water line are a hazard.
Much appreciated Ryan. Yeah they are not the best for the application, and they will be changed out for something more substantial in the future. But after many many years using them in multiple applications, I feel the risk is quite minimal for the time being. But thank you for pointing it out, as they are not the most advisable product for that location and use
The inferred meter is only good for reading surface temperature, they really don't do a good job at reading air temperature. Just go to the auto supply and get a dial thermometer.
You are correct, and I could have clarified better in the video. I was not reading the air temperature, I was reading the surface of the supply and return ducts. Not 100 percent accurate, but gives you a good enough idea how well the air temp is being drawn down
Thanks for showing your procedure. Our boat is always in fresh water in Georgian Bay and air is not needed as much as Florida obviously. Wondering, is this still required from time to time in fresh water? Thanks!
Thanks so much for tuning in. That is a great question, I have not done much freshwater boating. I would imagine you could get some sort of scale buildup, or freshwater mollusk growth, so I think an acid treatment would be a good idea as well. Also, you tend to get other crud that builds up in the lines, so it’s good to blast that stuff out of there to keep things running efficiently

Appreciated. Yes and no. You can have lots of water flow through an ac, but have a layer of scale in the coil that will majorly affect the exchange of heat, but it won’t really noticeably affect the flow of water through the pipe. And since I have self contained units throughout the boat at different distances and heights from the water source, you sometimes need to close a valve half way that goes to the nearest ac so that you can get enough flow to the ac way back in the aft of the boat.

Thank you brother. Other items would be the raw water circuit for your main engines, and stuff like a raw water wash down. Just about anything that uses raw water to function

I use bleach to shock my well , might work on your air conditioners as well . Tinting your windows or sun blocker shades also works . I wonder if ammonia would work better then Freon ? Just some thoughts .
When you say “well”, are you referring to a sea chest? Yep, I tinted my windows several years back, I also have window shades, and I have an exterior suns shade over the fwd windows/deck. Hmmm, yeah I have never heard of ammonia being used.

Hey Butch, can you share what size adapter you had to install on that pump to attach it to your Ac out hoses? It looks like it's a nylon fitting of some sort, but curious about the size since i just purchased the same pump. Thanks, Tim G
Hi Tim, I used a 1/2” female coupler and a 1/2” MIP x 5/8” nylon barb. The coupler screws on to the pump, and the the barb fitting screws in to the coupler. And then the standard ac water hose is 5/8” ID so it will slip over the barb.

AC's do not cool the air they remove heat!...lol Great Video...
😂 and if I understand correctly, when you run the ac in heat mode… it doesn’t heat the air, it removes the cool! Wait….🧐

I was lectured in school how you don't cool you remove heat! Engineers are A-holes...lol
Actually you are still removing heat but reversing the airflow from the evap to the cond!
