Your a great tech, Rick, and care for the customer. I strive but I’m nowhere close to being as good as you, but I don’t allow perfection to be the enemy of the good. You may find doing such will make you happier with delapidated equipment outside of your control. Yes the suction line could have been brazed better 22 years ago, but then again it lasted 22 years. Keep up the great work and videos. They help me become better. Thank you

Nice job. My mom has the exact unit made in 99. Last year burned the same terminal. Did the exact repair you did. Went today to clean the coil and check the pressures. She's still kicking it (knock on wood) Loud as hell, as always, but still going strong with no evidence of the wiring heating up as before. Hopefully that unit will keep going for another couple years while she gets her money together. We both know those old Goodmans are on borrowed time.

That's my Goodman. When the wire connectors corroded, I soldered the wires back on, 10 years ago. 5 years ago, I found a new R22 Carrier Air Handler with TXV. Replaced an unknown brand, really old air handler. I also bought a 30 lb jug of R22. $500, but at the time the going rate was $100 a pound. Now, I'm seeing $250 a pound. Couple of years, and I'll be able to swap the jug for a new car.
I'm obviously an Amateur. Apparently, $15K is the going rate to replace old with new. My duct work looks like it was installed by monkeys. I've fixed numerous holes, and moved the ducts being blocked by being hung over rafters.

This is exactly my unit, the CK24-1B. I replaced the cap as it was reading 25 and 3.9. But it still would not run the compressor but fan runs. I have the same 00, so I fear the same compressor terminal erosion. I have a replacement system sitting in the garage, but my recovery tank doesn't come for another couple weeks. So I was considering doing what you just did in the mean time.
It will likely work for several years and fail on something else.
Carrier gives you directions when you replace the motor terminals on an 06D on “how to wreck a perfectly good crimp tool” to crimp the barrels on them. I’ve had my pair since 07, and have never thought of using them on the flag terminals. Going to have to give it a try now. Thanks for sharing buddy, keep up the great work.

You are a great service man or tech as we are now called. I know because I've been doing service work for close to 50 years. I really enjoy your videos and frequently learn something. I no longer do commercial refrigeration because I am too old for the night and weekend calls. I still do residential HVAC service. I have two tips for you. 1 Take care of your knees. 2 Take about 10,000 to 15,000 iu's of D3 daily along with 100 mcg of vitamin K2 and about 1000 mg of magnesium malate. This will keep your immune system extremely strong protect you from a great many disease's.

I got a Rheem from the mid 90’s that I put a compressor terminal repair kit on about 5 years ago and it’s still rocking and rolling.
Those Rheem Classics are the last good air conditioner ever made. The sheet metal is heavy gauge. They are stout.

Rick What you said at the end is so true. I have always done my jobs ( communications tech, aircraft tech and now getting into HVAC ) as if I was working on my own equipment. The thing that makes me mad is when I hire someone to do work for me they DNGAS how they work on my stuff!

🤣 largest doesn't mean the best, just cheaper so more people buy it. Kinda like the Ford f150 is the best selling truck but it doesn't compare to the Chevy in comfort features.

You take a pair of 4.5" end cutting wire cutters and remove the remaining tab from the post. Sand paper the post as well as possible. Take a Hi-Temp chrome straight sta-kon 10-12 awg and the wire end will go over the terminal post tightly. You can take the same pliers and crimp it slightly if need be. Then strip your wire back to a clean unburnt section and use your pliers to crimp the spade end over the wire. Works perfectly. Cover will still fit , etc. Ive probably repaired 75-100 like this and never had 1 reburn. The cause of this wire burning , like the cause of nearly every Goodman problem is a dirty condenser sometimes in combo with an over heating fan motor. Pro Tip #1.....If you can see a Goodman Condenser its dirty. NEVER in 30 yrs walked up to 1 that wasnt.

I think you made the right call. Sure, everyone's going to have a different idea, but there are these things called courtesy and tolerance.
That one fusite terminal definitely looked a bit sketchy. Still, it held and your customer has air conditioning again...

Ahhhhh, good ol residential work! I’ve bought some crimpers that are made specifically for flag style disconnects. Works very well!

You seem like a good guy and worked with the customer which is great, but you _can_ get a new A/C for under $2k plus installation costs of course. I just bought a new precharged A/C, furnace, coil and precharged line set for under $4k. The A/C alone - $1,900. Installed myself saving $7k to $15k.

This happened to my 22 year old nordyne 2 years in a row. July 2020 was terminals corroded and burned the wires. July 2021 condenser fan motor and terminals burned off again. This time we put on a terminal repair kit... august 2022 comp blow out all the R22.... Now searing for a new unit
Not sure if you know this but there's a company named blue one if your service technician you can take the tests and send them proof that your technician but they have 24-hour service they have every wiring diagram for all different types of units and it's a form for us older text to help the newer guys but also the freon TDX 20 AKA are 458a is a direct replacement for r22 and it works with mineral oil makes unit higher capacity low is the coolant temperature of the compressor.
Also I've put those steak on repair kits on terminals and they've been running for over 5 years
5/9/24 just had a new Bryant unit installed .. $3960 complete, that was AC only ..
Good job Rick, I don't think going out of your way for seniors is bad, I also liked Ryan's idea for the wire crimper, it would be nice if a manufacturer would make one for that purpose, instead of grinding down a pair, Good work again.

They have a 1/4 in impact driver, wire wheel brush that would make those connections from the compressor terminals shiny as heck just a thought man they rock and they make really small ones
👍👍🤦🏻. I have three different sizes of those on my truck I use for brazing pipe and other cleaning tasks, I forgot about them, but I'm not sure how well it would have fitted into the tight spot I had to work in. Good call!

You can always use a small file or a portable reamer from Milwaukee if you have one or it's really good idea to buy a Dremel with the flexible head I encounter this a lot with power fluctuations melting the tabs all too familiar on the East Coast
I have the Milwaukee Dremel style tool, the fact remains this piece of equipment should have been replaced and was slated to be replaced until the customer found out how expensive they are. You have good points 👍👍 thanks for the feedback!

Aww man... Thanks! My soft spot is for those that did their best but need a little help. My grandma survived by herself on less than $600 a month back in the early 90s from social security, I had no idea🤦🏻 I was just a teenager.... I'm not sure how she did so much for others with so few resources.

I tried to crop it out but it looked weird.
If you want a really good crimping tool for those terminals any of the automotive tool brands like snap on, Mac, Matco, and blue point make a very good open barrel crimping tool. It works great for repairing engine wiring harnesses that have hundreds of pins to the larger ones you have here.
I've been looking for a good F terminal crimper for a few years, once I get the crimper the next issue is getting the shop to buy the terminals. The only reason I keep holding off is I only need to do this repair maybe a few times a year and I haven't found a 10ga crimper yet, normally all I see is 14 if I'm lucky and they're normally only good for insulated crimp terminals.
@@HVACRSurvival - I have a couple of F terminal crimpers, but I suspect you're not talking about coaxial cable connectors. (F connectors are the standard threaded coaxial connector used by just about every piece of TV related equipment out there, and cable modems)
@@tbelding correct, there similar in design. Most crimpers that are F style are insulated that I've found

Do you ever solder the connectors? I grabbed the milwaukee m12 solder tool. Yeah its a pain but it was my own stuff so... not sure if it helps though
I have the 12v Milwaukee but where are you soldering at? You can't solder the metal connectors.
@@HVACRSurvival Connector crimps, I clean the contacts and put new F or other connectors on then solder them, hoping they will hold up better if resistance gets high again, which eventually it will.

When they ask you how long will it last and what is the warranty i give them 10/10 warranty and it will run log enough to make it through the warranty they aak what exactly is a 10/10 warranty i reply 10 feet or ten second which ever comes first

Congratulations you think identically to myself it is sad when you think about how much people get screwed over on money because of simple issues on residential units especially straightforward AC units like this but the top of that recip is toasted that thing's being overheating for a while just thermal resetting continuously most likely had impacted condenser coil and got taken care of too late in life

I would forget about trying to put on new connectors. I would clean the pins on the compressor real good and solder the wires directly to the pins. This should solve the problem for good.
The pins on the compressor are steel and the material that's holding them in place is glass.
@@HVACRSurvivalGood point. I thought about that after I posted my comment. Some steel you can solder to and other types of steel you can't solder.
I don't know when they started using wimpy flag terminals on compressors. There is a flag terminal crimper, specific.
Good luck finding a 10 gauge flag crimper. I've looked. Nothing under $60

It’s time for the manufactures of these condenser units to use bolt on compressor terminals and use oversized stranded wiring. It might add $50 to the price of the unit, but the customer in making an expensive investment. It’s a great selling point for the brand and it does not run the cost of the unit up that much for the best electrical compressor connection on the market. This is truly upgrading the equipment. Just Waite till you touch one of those terminals and the entire charge blows out and the customer has to pay for a new compressor and a system charge and a new eyeball.
The customer shouldn't be in there messing with it so if they do they take on all the responsibility, if you were in the field you know that the compressor manufactures do have screw on terminals available but the manufacturer of the equipment chooses to buy the cheapest piece of $#/t they can put in there because the consumer is cheap, that's the reason why Walmart is one of the largest retailers in the world along with amazon. People don't want to know why it costs more money, they just want it cheaper. If you're wearing your safety glasses you can see what I'm saying 👀
