- The Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace) in Venice is the former seat of government of the Republic of Venice. The residence of the Doge, ruler of Venice, is a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture and a symbol of Venice's power and wealth.
The Doge's Palace in its current form was built in the 14th century in the Gothic style and replaced an older previous building. After several devastating fires, the palace was always rebuilt according to the original plans. Only the interior was adapted to contemporary tastes.
The three-wing complex is completely clad in colored marble. The facades facing St. Mark's Square and the lagoon were particularly magnificently designed. In addition to Byzantine style elements such as the pink and white diamond decoration and the crenellated crown, the Venetian Gothic style dominates with columns, pointed arches, custom-made windows, ornaments and sculptures.
From the lagoon side we enter the courtyard of the Doge's Palace. The courtyard is surrounded by colonnades and loggias. On the north side, the inner courtyard borders St. Mark's Basilica. The most important Venetian ceremonies took place in this courtyard, such as e.g. the coronation of the Doge. In the middle we see two richly decorated bronze fountains. They were also used by the population, as this inner courtyard was previously freely accessible.
The Giant Staircase (Scala dei Giganti), guarded by the two colossal statues of the gods Mars and Neptune, and the magnificent Golden Staircase (Scala d'Oro) made of gilded stucco lead to the upper floors. In the gallery we see a Lion's mouth (Bocca di Leone). Citizens could submit their complaints anonymously here. An effective system to improve administration, as only complaints against officials were allowed, but not against private individuals.
The interiors are very sumptuously decorated. The upper parts of the wall and the ceilings show works by the leading Venetian artists of the time (including Titian, Bellini, Veronese, Tintoretto) and praise the power and wealth of the Serenissima, the Republic of Venice.
We begin the tour in the Doge's private apartments, where today an exhibition about the 1100-year history of the Republic of Venice and the 120 Doges is on display. The doge's multi-stage election process was extremely complicated to prevent manipulation. However, over time, after various attempts at overthrow, the doge's power was increasingly restricted until he ultimately only had representative functions. The actual power lay with the committees of the merchant families, such as the Council of Ten.
Each of these committees had its own magnificent meeting hall. We admire the Sala del Collegio, where the Collegio del Salvi (Council of Wise Men) met. Also magnificent is the Sala del Senato (Senate Hall), where the Senate, which was responsible for overseeing trade and foreign policy matters, met. The Senate was composed of members of the most influential families. The Council of Ten, a very powerful committee responsible for internal security and justice, met in the Sala del Consiglio dei Dieci. It was founded after a failed coup attempt and then remained a permanent institution.
But the undisputed highlight of the Doge's Palace interior is the extremely magnificent Sala del Maggior Consiglio (Hall of the Great Council), where over 1000 nobles elected the Doge. With a length of 54 m, it is the largest hall in the Doge's Palace and is unique in Europe due to its unsupported ceiling. The entire back wall of the hall is taken up by the painting “Paradise” by Jacopo Tintoretto, which is considered the second largest oil painting in the world.
After all this pomp, we then go into the dungeons of the new prison in Venice. It is separated by a canal opposite the palace and we reach it via the famous Bridge of Sighs. The dark prison cells are a stark contrast to the palace's magnificent halls. Unfortunately, the even more notorious lead chambers of Venice can only be visited as part of a special tour.
Finally, we visit the Venice city museum, the Museo Correr. Here we learn a lot of interesting things about the history of the city and can admire other magnificent rooms.

Der Dogenpalast ist wirklich ein Meisterwerk klassischer Baukunst und Kunst. Die Gemälde sind überwältigend schön. Die alten Meister waren eben noch wirklich Künstler.
