Basilica di San Marco, Venice - the golden splendor of St. Mark's Basilica

- Today we visit the Basilica di San Marco, the famous St. Mark's Basilica in Venice in St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco). St. Mark's Basilica is very unusual for a Western church, as the building was built based on the Byzantine model. San Marco is a domed building and the interior is dominated by magnificent golden mosaics. Separate from the church is the world-famous bell tower, the Campanile.
A precursor of St. Mark's Cathedral was built in the 9th century to house the bones of the evangelist Mark (Marco), which were stolen from Alexandria in 828. Today's St. Mark's Basilica was built between 1063 and 1094 as a foundation by Doge Domenico Contarini. The construction and decoration phase extended into the 17th century, and the completion date is often considered to be 1617. The church served as a representation and showed the power and wealth of the Republic of Venice. However, it was not a bishop's seat, but was the church of the Doges.
The architecture, as well as the interior design, is based on Byzantine models. An uneven Greek cross forms the floor plan. The building is dominated by 5 domes over the 4 cross arms and the crossing. The facade is lavishly decorated with countless marble columns and sculptures from different eras. These were largely stolen during campaigns of conquest (e.g. from Byzantium during the Crusade in 1204) and reused here in San Marco.
The interior represents a highlight of Western mosaic art. The upper wall zones and the entire ceiling are completely covered with golden mosaics. The mosaics were mostly created in the 13th century and earned the cathedral the name “Golden Basilica”. The mosaics in the various domes are particularly outstanding. They show the salvation history of Christianity. We see, among other things, the Prophet's Dome with the announcement of the birth of Jesus, the Pentecost Dome with the sending of the Holy Spirit and the Ascension Dome with the ascension of the risen Jesus.
One of the most famous pieces of equipment in the church is the Pala d'oro, the gold antependium of the high altar. The large altarpiece made of gold and jewels shows scenes from the New Testament and the life of St. Mark. Here too, parts of the work of art come from the robbed Byzantium.
We climb up to the gallery. San Marco was one of the centers of European music in the Renaissance and early Baroque periods. This is where Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli invented polychoral music, i.e. dividing the instruments and the choir into several groups that stood in different galleries of the church. This creates a gripping spatial effect of the music. Claudio Monteverdi, the actual inventor of the opera, also worked as a bandmaster in San Marco for 30 years. In the high baroque period, it was Antonio Vivaldi who shaped the music here.
From the gallery we reach the Loggia dei Cavalli. On the balustrade above the portal of the cathedral we see a copy of the Quadriga, the famous ancient four-horse team made of gilded bronze, which, how could it be otherwise, during the conquest of Constantinople (1204) was stolen. It probably dates from Roman times and is the only surviving ancient four-horse team. The original Quadriga can be admired in the cathedral museum. From the loggia we have a wonderful view of St. Mark's Square with its hustle and bustle and the Campanile. To the south you can see the adjacent Doge's Palace and the Piazzetta San Marco. This is dominated by two monolithic columns dedicated to Venice's city saints Marco and Theodorus (Todaro). The lion of St. Mark stands on one pillar, while on the other pillar San Todaro poses with a crocodile.

Hallo und guten Abend, nach Venedig zu kommen, war mir bisher nicht vergönnt, sicherlich eine unglaublich schöne, wenn auch ein wenig überfüllte Stadt. Ein wirklich prachtvolles Gebäude und von innen atemberaubend schön. Wobei wir solche Pracht in Gotteshäusern eigentlich fehl am Platze finden, weil solche Anhäufung von Reichtümern nicht zu unserem Verständnis von Religion passt. Aber als Kultur- und Kunstdenkmal ist der Markusdom auf jeden Fall großartig. Vielen Dank für die tollen Bilder und beste Grüße
Die Kirchenbauten des Mittelalters waren neben ihrer religiösen Funktion immer auch eine Demonstration von Macht und Reichtum! Und Venedig hatte zeitweise das Monopol auf den Handel zwischen West und Ost und war daher die reichste Stadt des Abendlands. Das sieht man dann in der Innenausstattung! In die Höhe zu bauen ging ja nicht so gut, da der Untergrund so schwierig ist. Vielen Dank fürs Anschauen und den lieben Kommentar! 😊😊🐷

Sehr interessant, wie aufwendig doch die kirchlichen Bauten immer und prunkvoll. Man denkt sich immer, das Geld hätte man auch sinnvoller einsetzen können. Wir kennen die Basilica tatsächlich nur von aussen - es war uns irgendwie alles zu voll- daher vielen lieben Dank für die aufwendige und tolle Führung Ganz liebe Grüße Vicky und Alex
Die Kirchenbauten des Mittelalters waren neben ihrer religiösen Funktion immer auch eine Demonstration von Macht und Reichtum! Für den Dogen war das Geld absolut sinnvoll eingesetzt! 😁😁Sicherlich sieht man das heute anders. Auf der anderen Seite hat der Tourismus für Venedig ein Vielfaches an Geld gebracht gegenüber den Baukosten der Gebäude, wenn man das rein wirtschaftlich sieht.
