Hotel Fronfeste, Amberg - Overnight stay in the historic prison

- The Hotel Fronfeste is a former prison that is over 300 years old. It is part of the medieval city fortifications of Amberg. Today it is a historical themed hotel where you can feel a bit like you are in prison.
In the past, the massive building served as a prison and courthouse, including a torture chamber and execution site. The last execution took place here in 1935. The building was still used as a prison until the late 1950s. It has been a hotel since 2013. The atmosphere of the old prison has been preserved in the cells and rooms. The original furnishings serve the upscale “sleep penal system”.
Today we sleep in prison! We enter the Fronfeste and can immediately understand how one feels in prison. The long corridors, the old walls, the barred windows and the original cell doors create a spooky atmosphere. And the scaffold is still waiting for delinquents.
You can choose between the former prison cells from 1699 and the more spacious and bright themed cells, which are located, for example, in the chapel, the guard's room or the former doctor's room. Our room was the former prison chapel, which was still very stylishly furnished. But despite all the atmosphere, the cells are now equipped with heating, WiFi, TV, a comfortable bed and a bathroom. But the bars on the windows remained. In style, every guest receives free bread and water for their stay.
But there is not only water and bread, but also a rich breakfast buffet every morning.
We liked this:
- Original and fun decoration of the rooms and the whole building
- Good breakfast
- Nice location on the city walls and not far from the city center
We didn't like this much:
- We felt very comfortable in our themed cell, a classic cell would have been a bit too dark for us (but it certainly has more of a "prison feeling")
- The original floorboards creak quite loudly and the cells are quite noisy
Our conclusion:
An original hotel and a slightly different way to stay overnight!

Was für eine Idee...im offenen Schlafvollzug... Lieben wir 😂
Bisschen Fetisch auch abgedeckt mit den Handschellen an der Wand. So gemütlich hätten wir uns ein Gefängnis garnicht vorgestellt.Das Frühstück sah klasse aus.
Wir finden sowas als Konzept ja soviel netzer als die Bettenbunker. Ganz klasse, danke fürs Teilen und liebe Grüße Vicky und Alex

Hallo ihr Beiden, eine interessante Tour habt ihr da gemacht. Ein interessantes Hotel, mit einer großen Geschichte. Nach einer Gefängniszelle sah das Zimmer aber nicht aus. Der Gang zu den echten Gefängniszellen, war schon hoch interessant. Man möchte da aber auch nicht eingesperrt sein. Aber gut gezeigt. Beim Frühstück fehlte es ja an nichts. Sehr schönes Video. Der Daumen hoch Nr. 26 ist von mir. Gruß Rainer

Hallo und einen schönen guten Abend! Im Amberg in der Oberpfalz war ich auch schon, so luxuriös wie ihr durfte ich dort aber nicht wohnen. Das ist ein toll her gerichtetes Hotel in einem uralten Gebäude, man merkt die Geschichte noch an allen Ecken und enden! Genial! Und das Frühstück endete die ganze perfekte Übernachtung natürlich noch mal ab. Danke für diesen tollen Tipp, vielleicht reicht’s bei mir auch mal für diesen Luxus. Viele liebe Grüße, Martin und Maxi

Hallo. Das hat sich der Erbauer dieses Gefängnisses wohl nicht vorstellen können. Das die Gäste eines Tages sogar Geld bezahlen, um übernachten zu dürfen. Das Hotel wirkt detailverliebt, überall Anspielungen auf die Gefängniszeit, wie Handschellen an der Wand. Auch wenn einige wie der Hinrichtungsort makaber wirken.
