    I received this incredible message from the guy who originally sold the ring.
    You were correct about someone standing on it, the pliers and it lying outside.. Here's the rings story.. In approximately the late 1970's, my father bought a dressing table in an auction. In one of the drawers he found that ring. He stamped on it and threw it out the back door and it hadn't been seen for over 30 years. After that long time I was out cleaning guttering on the extension which he had finished 30 years ago and found that ring stuck in a pile of mud.. I tried to straighten it with pliers at the time and that's how the crack happened. Then the ring lay around the house for a few years until I put it on ebay thinking someone might have an interest in it....Then you bought it and did that amazing job!!! Fair play. I'm delighted the ring had a happy ending :)

      Hey Dave, do you have a getting started video with tool list spply ect.? I do watch repair and this looks like it could help.

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  Před 6 lety

      A few people have asked what tools to buy. And the answer is never simple, as it depends on what you want to make. I do a lot of wire work, so for me its pliers (i have several drawers full). But others like to add texture by hammering, so some have lots of hammers ( i only have a couple). Some engrave, some set gems, etc etc. jewellery is such as vast subject, so everyone set up will be different. For watch repair, again it depends how advanced you want to get. For starters, you want to adjust and replace straps (so pin tools, leather punch, and spring bar tool), then to change batteries you will need a selection of case opening tools, knife and a watch case press. Small screwdrivers and an optivisor are pretty mandatory. Check out my friends at eternal tools. Dave www.eternaltools.com/

      No I have the watch repair handled, what I was wondering about begginer gold/silver soldering. To repair cases.

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  Před 6 lety

      Simple..
      Solder. Use Syringe solder as that negates the need for borax cones and flux. silver easy, 9ct easy should cover most jobs.
      Small torch, one of the butane Chef's type torches will be fine for small jobs, no need for gas canisters and regulators. just a can of lighter gas
      solder block, just a cheap solder block to protect your worktop.
      You will also want some "pickle", to remove oxide and clean the piece after soldering. You can buy powdered safety pickle which you mix with warm water in plastic bowl. simple. If you want to improve its effectiveness a babys bottle warmer or small electric crock pot is perfect for keeping the pickle warm.
      That's it, torch, solder, block, pickle. below are "some" of my tools....Dave
      Solder czcams.com/video/en2KLTb-CV4/video.html

    I work in the waste water industry and was lucky enough to find an onix ring and also one of these swivel Masonic rings with the blue enamel.
    I am wanting to shine them up to sell as I have no use for them. Could you recommend something around the house I might have that will polish them up like brasso etc or will I need to buy a gold specific polish? I have a dremel for making the job easier but unsure on the compound.
    Kind regards
    Marcus

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  Před 8 lety

      +Marcus Brown ..You really need the correct polish. Typically this would be Tripoli and rogue which you could use with your dremel on a felt wheel (Tripoli) and a soft cotton mop for the rogue. But ideally, you'd use buff sticks firsts and rubber polishing tips to remove scratches. I have a huge assortment of polishing accessories and getting a finish like this does take work.
      If you don't have any polish, you could try a set of 3M radial discs. these will get you a "decent" finish without buying too much. You use them dry... czcams.com/video/uUBnN4j98Nc/video.html
      A simpler alternative would be to take the rings to a local jeweller who can clean and polish them for a few pounds.
      Dave.

    Great video, I was wondering if I should use red rouge or a compound called fabulustre to get the light scratches out of my 10k signet ring, it may have one tiny spot that may be considered a medium scratch, but it may just be a light scratch as well?

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  Před 2 lety +1

      I'm not familiar with fabulustre, so many comment on that. Rouge will give a polish, but isn't abrasive enough to remove deep scratches., only fine surface marks and tarnish. For heavier scratches you need something with more cut like jewellers Tripoli. If in doubt take it to any jeweller, who should only charge a few pounds for polishing, they will also be able to get inside and ultrasonic clean it too so a much better job that you could probably achieve yourself (and cheaper than buying the polish). +iuli sidorov Since trying the menzerna polishes, I no longer use Tripoli or rogue . The IP on its own will take it from 600 grit emery paper to a mirror finish on one step. That's the stuff ! The SF just gives that final showroom shine, particularity on yellow gold. As I say, I don't use anything else now.

    Hi Dave. What do you call a signet ring that spins like that? Have you ever come across one that spins that isn't a masons ring?

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  Před 8 lety +2

      +Pablo Barclini ..They are just refereed to as "Masonic Swivel rings". The idea is that when in mixed company you can wear the ring as a normal signet rig, but when in the company of fellow brethren, you can rotate your ring to display the square and compass. Still very popular today, when discretion is required. Hence many items of Masonic jewellery change in this way. ; )

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  Před 3 lety +1

      Depending on what the discoloration is, it may need to be removed mechanically. I've had this myself when i've forgotten about things and left them in there for days. I've had to run them in the tumbler, with abrasive powder to clean it of and then polish it again. If you don't have a tumbler, then just take it to your local jeweller and asked them to tumble or magnetic polish it. Should only be a couple of pounds for a clean up. Hope this helps. Dave.

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  Před 3 lety +1

      If the gold is "peeling off" then its obviously not real gold. Perhaps its gold plated, or rolled gold (thick layer of gold over the top of a base metal). Either way, * * polishing it will make it worse * * . You need to take it to a jeweller, who can look at it carefully and ascertain what it is. If its plated then it can be replanted for a few pounds. But if its rolled gold that's wearing off, there is probably little you can do. Hope this helps. Dave

    How many carats is this ring? Do you advise on buying 9ct, how bad can tarnish can get on a 9ct?

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  Před 4 lety

      Carat (or USA Karat) refers to parts per 24. So pure gold would be 24Ct or 24K. Gold sovereigns are 22ct, wedding rings may be 18ct, or 14k in the USA .
      But Here in the UK we have 9ct (this ring) which is 24/9 or 37.5% gold (just over a third gold). the rest being copper and nickel. It does darken a little over the years due to the copper, but its very slow and minimal, Higher carat gold like 14k or 22k would not tarnish much at all, as gold does not really oxidise. So the more gold , the less it will tarnish. Dave

      @CelticDreamsCoUk  Před 4 lety +1

      If its an old ring then the "blue" will be glass enamel. This is difficult to get repaired, using traditional glass powder. However, we now have what is called "cold enamel" which is basically coloured epoxy resin. I use this method to repair anything enamelled. Just chip the remaining broken glass enamel out and fill with the coloured epoxy. It gives the same result but without the need to kiln fire the ring. Any local repair jeweller should be able to do this for a few pounds. Hope this helps. S & F. Dave

      I presume you are in the USA as you have said Karat with a K. It depends what you mean by "clasp" but just go online to a large supplier such as Riogrande.com and you should be able to get a gold lobster clasp. 22k is hard to find though, as its soft. (18k and 14k are more readily available) 22k will be expensive though as its very high quality gold. Attach with a jump ring and you're done. If the necklace is heavy you may want to get the jump ring soldered. Should only cost a few dollars for soldering, but buy the clasp yourself as a jeweller will buy it from the same place and add a profit on top. Hope this helps. Dave

      +Luke Shepherd Well, obviously I don't know where you live.But even if I did, I can't comment on any jewellers local to you. But what I will say is that most high street chain stores do not employ bench jewellers in the stores, as its too expensive. They will send work off to service companies (and charge you for it). What you need to find is a small independent jeweller, who has a workbench in the back of the shop. That's the kind of guy who will polish your ring for a few pounds. Sadly there aren't many "real" jewellers and goldsmiths left. Look for the small jewellery shop, down the back street somewhere.

      As to the price for such a job, it's the time that's the factor. The video was filmed over several hours and if that's all the jeweller is doing in that time then it's going to cost you. depending on what they charge per hour. My plumber is £75 per hour, the local garage is £60 per hour. I don't see why a highly skilled jeweller should be any different. difficult to say but I hope this sort of answers your question. Dave.

      What do you want to know? it's a masonic signet ring, featuring the Square and compass, the symbol of the Freemasons. The G at the centre refers to "The great architect of the universe", God to most, but Masonry is non religious so, G symbolises whatever you consider the great architect to be. No one asks. The compasses reminds us to circumscribe our passions and prejudices. and no to go beyond certain boundaries. The square reminds to act according to masonic line and rule, to be straight, upright. Basically the insignia is a series or reminders and moral lessons to be a good person. Every tiny part has meaning and symbolism. Not everyone wants to openly display that they are a freemason, so hence the ring revolves. It can be worn as regular signet ring, but when in "safe" company, the ring can be rotated to reveal ones association.Typically worn,on the third finger of the right hand and hence visible when offering your hand in friendship. In case you are wondering... the ring is mine 'and I wear it'. Dave ; )

      Celtic Dreams but will it reduce the karat and the grams?

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  Před 6 lety

      Hence why its important to always use the same carat (Uk spelling) of solder. When soldering the solder is added, so a slight increase in weight, not that it would ever be measurable, as typically you'd only use a tiny pinhead size piece of solder. Welding or laser does not use solder, so simply melts the metal that is there. No metal loss or contamination. You can also use a laser or welder to add wire to fill a gap or strengthen a piece. As above, using this technique you would use the same wire as the ring you are welding. Always use the same carat and colour. Dave
