I am just getting started and made a few rings where the Sauter flowed nicely. Tonight I could not get solder to flow. I’ve tried paste Sauter, pre-cut little solder squares, as well as solder that I cut myself. It’s so frustrating.

This was extremely helpful! I started jewelry classes a couple of months ago. Some teachers say that a watery flux isn't that much of an issues and others say we shouldn't. I always put a tad too much soldering 😅 now I know I shouldn't. I would just like to ask where did you find that heat gun (idk what to call it sorry I'm french canadian😂), I'd like to get my hands on a similar one to be able to work at home.

Hi Megan I have a 22kt bracelet that’s had a bit of extra work done happy with it. However I noticed the area that’s been worked on it’s not as yellow as it use to be it’s more red/pinkish. and I believe it’s due to the way it was heated causing oxidation. What can be done to restore its lustre?

    Hiya Megan,
Thank you for the video. A few points, if I may. In the first and, I think, the third demo, the solder was not melted but in a half-melted lump. Plus, in the third, why add more solder when you had already almost soldered the pieces of silver together, and sufficient solder was already there.
There are more than three sterling solder types; there are five. Extra hard/enamelling solder; hard; medium; easy, and extra easy. The colour the solder ages to depends on what type of solder it is. The higher the melting point, the more pure silver in it; therefore, the more 'Silver coloured' it will look. Plus, a full explanation of how the joints react on re-applying heat to add more joints would have been good.
Three times and a sixth are different by a factor of two. The first would be two; the second, one-piece, different from what you implied they would be.
When soldering a ring, rather than putting the solder on the flux, on the ring, if you place the fluxed ring on the solder there is less chance of it moving when the flux boils. Adding the solder after the flux has boiled is another way.
At one point, you called the flux; the solder.
You don't mention pickling; most consider this a vital part of soldering. The fact that it's often an acid is essential. Basia has explained about the need to neuter this.
I'm not a teacher, just someone who has been soldering in different ways for 54 years and is learning to be a goldsmith. There are a few books on jewellery making and soldering that I've learned from that might help you. Cookson Gold has a fine selection.
I'll leave it there as I've added enough.
    Stay safe, Steve.

    • @megan.collins
      @megan.collins  Před rokem +6

      Hi Steve,
I'll admit I exaggerated some of the mistakes for dramatic effect as I mentioned in the video - the too much solder for eg. 😉
In terms of the different alloys of the solders and the subsequent different colours the solder leaves, I have mentioned in a couple of my previous videos. Probably could have mentioned it here again, but I forgot as I'm only human , last time I checked at least 😋
You definitely have more soldering years under your belt I'll hand that to you. Probably not a very helpful video for you, but I hope that my 'slightly humourous' ( I hope) video helped some beginners.
      Take care

All of a sudden my solder won’t melt. I can hold the heat on there forever and the solder won’t melt or flow. What could be causing this? It’s easy solder! Oh and my hands shake so bad! It makes me crazy! The more I try to hold something still the harder they shake!

I had this problem in my metals class at niu. After days of not getting the solder to flow (I was using hard ) I got it to work. I’m positive it was combination of things like what part of the flame I was using (refer to the video). The right temps, portion of the flame, and even heating of the metal is so important. The info I’m talking about is midway through the video). I’m late but hope it helps if you haven’t fixed it already
