Thank you. About to do my first soldier repair and this was so helpful. No doubt I’ll just do the other 20 rookie mistakes instead, but at least I won’t do these.
It's a learning curve, but you'll get it!
So amazing of you to show what not to do instead of just showing how to do it perfectly. Brilliant and much appreciation❣️ So happy I found you💞
I'm ssooo glad you're here😊
Thank you! Great video for beginners.
Lovely and educational as always Megan 😂 I loved the music too 👍🏻 great video thank you for all the tips ❤
Thanks so much! 😊
Great tips! Love your energy💜
You're so sweet, thanks so much!!
A light video about soldering ^^ enjoyed watching it
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for sharing 😊
Thank you so much. I need to watch this video 100 times, I've definitely made 200+ attempts at soldering with bench basics silver solder paste, and have only been successful with 2-3 solders.
Hi! I just found out about your videos. I like them soooo much! thank you for the very educational videos!
Oh yay!! Welcome to the channel! So glad you are finding them helpful! 🤗
Love your video's, very empowering. Where did you ever find such a small borax dish?
Very useful tips and very amusing as well.
Hahaha! Thought I'd have a bit of fun exaggerating a bit! 😅 Glad you enjoyed it!
Im just starting and have somehow managed to melt literally everything ive tried to make 🤦🏿♂️. Im so bad at this 😂😂
Grrrrr. I hear you. I feel like I have more melted peices than finished pieces.
@jjsmama401 Ur probably alot more experienced and skilled than I am 🤣🤣. I'm finally able to make a simple claw setting 🤣
@ericdavis9210, you're the problem
You are great ❤❤❤
Many thanks for the 10 advices.
Houcine from Morocco
You’re so very welcome! Hope they are helpful to you on your journey!

You’re so very welcome!🤍
Great advice. By the way, I'm French and your "voila" (2:27) has a very good pronunciation.
Thank you!😊
Thats the right thing to do. Follow your Heart.I believe the most of the people have dreams like u have, and never jumps on the train.Have fun :)
Exactly!! I couldn't agree more!! I'm planning a video about just that coming out soon. 😉
have you experienced a lot of butane fumes when you are soldering? I found that even with ventilation, my room fills with fumes...and I have the same torch you are using in this video
I am just getting started and made a few rings where the Sauter flowed nicely. Tonight I could not get solder to flow. I’ve tried paste Sauter, pre-cut little solder squares, as well as solder that I cut myself. It’s so frustrating.
Thanks for this, love the bloopers 😂
So glad you enjoyed it!😉
@@megan.collins always 😊
This was extremely helpful! I started jewelry classes a couple of months ago. Some teachers say that a watery flux isn't that much of an issues and others say we shouldn't. I always put a tad too much soldering 😅 now I know I shouldn't. I would just like to ask where did you find that heat gun (idk what to call it sorry I'm french canadian😂), I'd like to get my hands on a similar one to be able to work at home.
A heating torch:)
Stars.reborn i'd like to know the brand if possible :/ if I write heating torch on google I get different results and can't find the one she's using or anything similar :(
Hi, you can search for "small soldering torch" or "butane torch" I have the Dremel. Proxxon also makes a good one.

You the best jeweller in the world thx God bless
Aaah, thank you! 😊🙏
Hi Megan I have a 22kt bracelet that’s had a bit of extra work done happy with it. However I noticed the area that’s been worked on it’s not as yellow as it use to be it’s more red/pinkish. and I believe it’s due to the way it was heated causing oxidation. What can be done to restore its lustre?
Fire scale. Remove with a file and re-polish.
I'll be sending you some more viewers
how to make the different types of solder hard, medium, and soft, thank you, have a nice day
Do you wear a mask and goggles? Would you recommend a fume extractor? X
Another quick question...I wanted to go in and review photography video I purchased but I can never remember how to get in there to open it. Where is the log in......
Here is the log in page: www.megancollins.co/login :)
Hiya Megan,
Thank you for the video. A few points, if I may. In the first and, I think, the third demo, the solder was not melted but in a half-melted lump. Plus, in the third, why add more solder when you had already almost soldered the pieces of silver together, and sufficient solder was already there.
There are more than three sterling solder types; there are five. Extra hard/enamelling solder; hard; medium; easy, and extra easy. The colour the solder ages to depends on what type of solder it is. The higher the melting point, the more pure silver in it; therefore, the more 'Silver coloured' it will look. Plus, a full explanation of how the joints react on re-applying heat to add more joints would have been good.
Three times and a sixth are different by a factor of two. The first would be two; the second, one-piece, different from what you implied they would be.
When soldering a ring, rather than putting the solder on the flux, on the ring, if you place the fluxed ring on the solder there is less chance of it moving when the flux boils. Adding the solder after the flux has boiled is another way.
At one point, you called the flux; the solder.
You don't mention pickling; most consider this a vital part of soldering. The fact that it's often an acid is essential. Basia has explained about the need to neuter this.
I'm not a teacher, just someone who has been soldering in different ways for 54 years and is learning to be a goldsmith. There are a few books on jewellery making and soldering that I've learned from that might help you. Cookson Gold has a fine selection.
I'll leave it there as I've added enough.
Stay safe, Steve.
Hi Steve,
I'll admit I exaggerated some of the mistakes for dramatic effect as I mentioned in the video - the too much solder for eg. 😉
In terms of the different alloys of the solders and the subsequent different colours the solder leaves, I have mentioned in a couple of my previous videos. Probably could have mentioned it here again, but I forgot as I'm only human , last time I checked at least 😋
You definitely have more soldering years under your belt I'll hand that to you. Probably not a very helpful video for you, but I hope that my 'slightly humourous' ( I hope) video helped some beginners.
Take care
Super porady!!! pozdrawiam Zbyszek 😊👍
Glad you enjoyed them!
I am abeginner with 73 years old.
Amazing!! It’s never too late to start, cannot wait to see what you do!
Hi from Houcine From Morocco.
Hello there to you in Morocco!😊
I’m a beginner. How do you know if solder is off?
Smell, color and taste.
go back to scoll user hard soldering ponga las 2 partes juntas perfectas ponga la soldadura en medio y soldar
All of a sudden my solder won’t melt. I can hold the heat on there forever and the solder won’t melt or flow. What could be causing this? It’s easy solder! Oh and my hands shake so bad! It makes me crazy! The more I try to hold something still the harder they shake!
I had this problem in my metals class at niu. After days of not getting the solder to flow (I was using hard ) I got it to work. I’m positive it was combination of things like what part of the flame I was using (refer to the video). The right temps, portion of the flame, and even heating of the metal is so important. The info I’m talking about is midway through the video). I’m late but hope it helps if you haven’t fixed it already
Some solders are not consistent. Buy from a reputable refiner.
Lay off the coffee.

Or you could have called this video..."How to keep your bangs while soldering ! " LOL !!!! I only have butane torches and I am sure they will all blow up at once on me !!! LOL !!!!! I have never once had any issue with any of them but I have lost some length off my bangs !!
Hahaha! You didn't, did!? 😂 I made sure I tied my hair back 😅 I may have exaggerated the excess solder one! 😋 Had fun filming it all. Thanks for watching and tie your hair up! 😂
💯😂💟
Glad you enjoyed it! 🤗
love your videos do you have any tips for gold soldering ? @megan.collins
