Today I thought I'd show you how I make one of my signature best-selling silver necklaces. The funny thing is that initially this design was meant to be a pair of earrings, but ended up being an even better necklace after I modified it.

Nice studio setup! Glue a piece of Mass Loaded Vinyl under your table top to reduce the sound of hammering. The table is a giant box drum. You need to lower the THAM THAM THAM to a soft thud thud thud. Same principle as your bench block." The table is amplifying the sound. I would also add Mass Loaded Vinyl under table legs. You can roll a sheet under the whole table. It absorbs sound.

FINALLY! you are the first jeweller to comment/instruct about proper file direction (one way)...been doing this on and off since the early 70's when i first learned techniques in college...^^^#oldgit
for smaller things like jump rings, i'll put solder on the ends and melt that on, then solder it on the the main piece...saves time/patience having to wiggle tiny bits of solder during the heating up process.
Hahaha! Yup! I learnt about file direction from my dad when I was very young! And thanks for the tip, great idea for the solder. Funny I do it that way on some items, but been making the Arc necklace so long that I kinda just do it the same way. Thanks for that! 😅 Totally going to save me time! Woohoo!

Thanks Sue! ☺️ Another option is to sweat solder onto the ends of the jump rings first and then position it in place. Bit less fiddly.

Hi Lina, so glad you are finding the videos inspiring. ;) The ring on my left hand is made from wax. This is a great way of making more complex shapes/designs. This then gets used to make a mould, which is then used to make the piece out of metal. I'd be happy to do a video or two on wax carving if you'd be interested in seeing that. ;)

I live in a 2nd story apartment and I just lay a bean bag on my bench then my metal block. I havn't had to apologize to my neighbors since. And seems to work great.

Awesome!! So glad to hear that! 😊 The steel wool I use is 0000 extra fine grade. It's great!! I use it all the time! You can find it in some hardware stores or jewellery shops. 😉

Hello and welcome Robin! So happy to help! Love that term 'baby smith'!! And yes I noticed the same with other videos so I do really try to make mine beginner friendly as I feel this is when we need the most support. With regards to thickness for a focal piece, if using sheet, it depends on how much is cut out if its an intricate design. but for example my Arc necklace (there is a video on the making of this one) as I hammer it it hardens, so I use 0.6mm sheet. But if its a delicate cut out, I wouldn't go less than 0.9mm. hard to say unless I see the design. Feel free to send me a picture on DM on Insta @megancollins.co ;)

Yes I use ready made chains. You can try using solder paste. It behaves a bit differently from the chips. 😉

So glad you enjoyed it! In terms of suppliers it varies a lot from country to country. In the UK I used to use cooksongold or Bellore Rushbelle for chains. Do a bit of research in your area and make sure it's pure metals if that's what you're after. ;)
Hiya, thank you for a wonderful laidback video. I found problems using a rawhide mallet and switched to a plastic face one, the same effect. I would have used paste solder to help hold the ring in place. I'm very much still learning and found your film very useful.

I have some questions for you. The wire gauges you used in your rings are they 18g or 16g and same question for your earrings too? Any recommendations you can suggest? You have lovely pieces ;)
Hello Carmina, for the rings on the back of the necklace here I use around 25. (0.5mm) but for normal finger rings I use around 18 - 19 on average but depending on the profile of the wire I sometimes use wider. Say if it's a rectangular wire or D-shaped. Hope that's helpful. ;)

Where is the best place to purchase economical jewelry saw, blades?
Really depends which country you are based in. But personally I avoid the cheap cheap ones as they are such low quality and just don't glide as well and break very easily. I used to get these cheapies in London in person from a shop in Hatton garden called S&M tools, yes weird name I know, lol! But Walsch or cooksongold were better and worth it. I don't break them too often so would rather use these. Rio Grande is also good I hear but haven't tried them personally yet. ;)

Hiya again, when you are annealing if you scribble permanent black ink Sharpy on the silver, it must be that brand, the ink burns off at the annealing temperature. So when the black ink fades it is ready. I can't always see the colour change. Stay safe, Steve...

A different comment: I notice your ring in a chain on your own neck. I have some nephrite jade doughnut with a very small hole. How do I fix something tightly through that hole? I dare not solder closed to the jade, I think it might break. Kofod, Borneo.
Hello hello, I'm not sure I understand what you mean. But yes, do not heat near the stone. Do you want a chain to go through and not fall out?
@@megan.collins Hi again. I have this doughnut jade like your red one and I want to make a nice setting to it with a bail on top. So I want to make some organic shapes that hold the doughnut, possibly with a small clear stone in the hole. Of course, I could place a tube in the hole and flare it out, but do you have other ideas? If so, I am sure others would like to hear and see it too.

There's something strangely captivating about you. That aside... do you have baking soda in your water rinse, or no? And also... did you put the solder directly under the jump ring? It looked like it sank down at the end. New to this (to the point that I haven't even started yet... just got some torches, third hands, and some silver coming in, etc).
Aah thank you so much! ☺️ I do not have baking soda in my water. It's just straight up tap. Some people do, some don't. I don't. Yes I placed the solder just next to the jump ring with gravity in my favour so that when it's heated up it flowed. Another option is to sweat solder the solder onto the end of the jumping first and then position it in place. ;) Have fun with all of your new skills! It's such a great time I'm when you are learning so much all the time! I loved it so much when I started!! ☺️
