I'm a current college student and was SO close to buying some basic silversmith starter kits. Little did I know how.much was involved! I definitely appreciated the video.
Hello pony, Glad to see you are starting silversmithing. Sometimes in the starter kits they put in extra things that you don't really need at first. Start with the basics and grow into your tools. Get a jeweler's saw frame and blades, some needle files, one flat and one half round file, raw hide mallet, one planishing hammer, bench block, vice, and soldering tools. You will start to know which tools you need with more experience. I remember when I was a senior in college ( 50 years ago!!) and I had a few basic tools. I found a steel drawered tool box. I was very excited to gather my tools all in one place. I still have that tool box and use it every day! Start your collection slowly and grow into your tools. One thing that I have been using for soldering small items is a small bowl of carborundum grains. Been soldering with it for many years and have grown to love this little bowl.

A bit more about a good workbench, how to place tools, parts, on the wall in drawers, etc around you for comfortable and effective work. Which chair to use... i only participated in a half day teaser course, watching lots bof videos now, will build a little workshop during x-mas holidays. Hello Robert. Thank you for your nice comments. I appreciate it. Also, thank you for your interest in a beginner workplace video. You must have been reading my mind. I am starting to work on a series on setting up a studio with different ideas for tool placement etc. Unfortunately, I will not have it finished by the holidays. In the meantime, make sure you have a solid bench. That is the beginning step in a successful studio. Decide if you want to sit low or high at the bench. This is a personal preference. Generally, you will be sitting low to the bench so you can saw and work on the bench pin. You can start off simple for the tool storage which can be expanded as you learn more and need more tools. Get a tool box that has front drawers. This can be put on top of the bench to hold the few tools when you first start. In the videos, I will show you my first tool box and how I still use it today. The more you work in the studio, the more you will feel comfortable with ever changing arrangements. I have had many studios over the last 50 years (Oh my gosh), and each has been unique. The layout changes with the space available. Make your space comfortable and inviting. You will spend many hours in it, so enjoy your stay! Thank you for this video! My head is spinning trying to build inventory in the last year to make my own li'l studio at home. It's been a challenge to prioritize my tool purchases, and I'm only a quarter of the way there. I DID just invest in a set of Fretz jeweler hammers that should be arriving next week, though! My very first set of my very own hammers! It's a big deal.
Hello Nicole, Wow!! New hammers, very exciting. Yes, it is a big deal. It can be a challenge to prioritize your tool purchases. I would recommend that you order your tools when your work and design ideas dictate which tools to use. Example, you may not use a burnisher for 8 months. So why buy it now. I am happy for you because it is exciting to build your studio and get the tools that you will use and love for years to come. Some of my favorite tools I have had for over 45 years. flushcut pliers are best to make yourself, by grinding the back or regular cutters, flush!
also you can make flush cut gouging cutters, by grinding the pliers flush and convex.
this way you can get truly flush cuts.

Hello Marco, Thank you for your kind comment. A triangular scraper is use to "debur" cut tubing, rough edges of metal after sawing, scraping extra solder off of metal. I would add, that of the pliers one often requires a pair of those for certain works (chain nose, flat nose, parallel). With the saw frames, the basic ones are good - not only for starters - but one should have frames with different depths as I feel that a smaller depths enhances accuracy when sawing but a deeper saw frame might be requires for certain projects. When it comes to making jump rings (I make a lot of those) I go for plain steel rods that are cheaply available in any sizes and which are good enough to also make some custom stamps and punches. Butane torches: I happen to be a slightly ambidextrous right-handed guy, so I can do a lot of tasks with my left hand as well. The only butane torch I found working independently of what your main hand is, is one from Proxxon - it can be operated single-handedly and with both, left and right hand. All other torches I found basically require both hands to operate or are based on the assumption that you are a right-handed person. This can slow down your work and also affect the amount of fuel burned as you cannot handle the device as quickly. I also found a couple of butane torches sold be jewelry suppliers that I would rather see unfit for the task as you could easily burn yourself because the handle is not properly insulated. For pickling I have been using potassium alum for years. It is dead cheap and can also be used for a lot more tasks. Works best at 60-80°C but also has nice results at room temperature if you leave your piece in the pickle over night. Flexshaft/Pendant motors: Must have ! Don't ever go for the Dremel type options - The pendant motor comes with a variable speed control and can operate at very low RP/M. The price difference isn't that much if you consider burning off hundreds of bits due to the high minimum RP/M of a Dremel tool.
Depending on what size of jewelry you're making, I would add a bench polishing motor (e.g. if you make cuffs and bracelets - much easier to polish larger surfaces) and once you have accumulated enough waste material, an ingot mould and a small rolling mill. The latter saved me lots of time on different projects as well.

Hello Greg excellent video, helps a lot to know what are the most essential tools to have for jewelry making.
I live in Panama and work with the Wounaan indian artists from the Darien rainforest.
They carve beautiful shell cameos for me to set.
The cameos range in size from 23mm round to 42mm round.
We work with a filigree artist in Panama that set a 42mm round cameo in filigree.
The weight of the silver filigree setting is 8.1 grams.
It's very light and beautiful.
I am finishing pieces set on 42mm
.950 silver discs that are hand pounded on the back of the discs.
The pieces I've just finished setting range from 26mm to 32mm in weight.
They seem much heavier than the filigree settings.
We've sold smaller disc pendants that weight between 11 grams and 15 grams and the weight hasen't been a problem.
In your experience do you think that a necklace pendant of 32 grams is too heavy for most women?
I'm just getting started and would like your opinion as to whether the 32 gram pendants are generally too heavy for women.
I can try and hand pound the silver discs to a lower gram weight.
What weight do you think would be best for the 42mm size?

I thinks the 32 grams is a little on the heavy side, but should be fine. Many wearers these days do not mind the extra weight. Keep the thickness of the .950 silver discs, BUT, you might think about piercing the discs with an interesting design or pattern that would relate to the cameo. This way, it would add interest to the back of the piece AND make it lighter. Put some of your pictures on your channel and I'll take a look at them. Sounds interesting. Hey Greg, I love how you marked your tools. Ambiguous. My guess is that you also have a wood burner but never ever use it for anything so one day you were trying to get away from life and you didn’t feel like making jewelry because you knew you would just screw it up if you tried so instead you dig out the old wood burner you only used once and then you burned 666 into all of your hammers. Then had half a bottle of scotch and cursed the fact that the scotch makes your hands shaky but life in general and creating things with metal make you need scotch. But you can be free. The scotch doesn’t control you. You are the sentient party. The scotch is a crutch for when you just can’t find the right GD hammer. So you fill your days with regrets and your gullet with a nice single malt scotch that you paid too much for because paying extra makes you feel like you are a connesiur rather than a victim. So you put out a big white blanket under the moonlight and display your hammers to the gods in hopes that they will admire your collection and identify with you as they too use very well crafted and specific tools in their work.
Side note: this is an assignment for my creative writing class. I am to find videos that interest me and create a story around said video. As I am a hobbyist silversmith that just got some new old hammers gifted to me, this is where I find myself. The video itself isn’t shared in class unless the creator wishes that it be shared.
The gods, slightly interested in the precision and functionality of your collection take you and your tools up to the land outside of time so you can repair their adornments that they have taken from the time realm. You never meet any of the gods but you do meet their wardens who hold you under the threat of eternal pain and force you to do the work. If it isn’t subjectively perfect for the gods then you will again be subject to an eternity of immense suffering. If you create a perfect piece that they love in a manner they do not approve of you will be sentenced to an eternity of pain, suffering and confusion. If you create a perfect piece in a godly manner they approve of but they dislike your haircut, again it is eternal turmoil. So you work endlessly to hammer out the details and become perfect enough to suit the gods. After they have looked upon you and your masterpiece and have not given you praise but grudging and apathetic acceptance you finally realize that they never had the power to take you or hold you or force you to do anything for them.

Is it safe to have a crockpot with pickle in the living room, on low heat for long periods of time? I know it isn't ideal, but it's the only option I have at the time.
Hello Red Eye Stones, The pickle will give off fumes which could be a health hazard. If you are using vinegar or citric acid, then it is not a big problem. Unless you don't like vinegar smell in your living room. The commercial pickles will work at room temperatures, but take longer to work. So this could be an option for you. I hope this helps you. Hello Vj, A round figure for the basic tools is $600. and a flex shaft is $150. to $250 (basic flexible shaft) So your total is approx. $800 to $1,000. You do not have to purchase all of the tools at once. Start with the tools that fit the type of jewelry work you want to try. (example) Wire work or sheet metal forming. It looked like none of your pliers have teeth, is that right? I'm assuming it's so they won't chew up the soft metal. So far it seems like buying the materials for jewelry making, the metals I mean, are more expensive than the tools. A small piece of sterling silver costs more than a few of these tools combined.
Hello Patric, You are correct, no teeth on any pliers. I try to polish them also. The less amount of damage to the metal the better. Yes, the price of metal is high for sure. You can do some work with copper to keep the expense down and to learn some of the techniques before you do your projects in silver. I remember sitting around the jewelry studio in collage and talking about the price of gold. It was a HUGE price for us, but we should have pooled our money and bought a ton of gold at the HUGE price of $52. an once!!! Thank you for watching and sharing. Greg Greenwood

All those tools are indeed essential yet the above list is too minimal, you would need more to start more then just a hobby,
a mill to flatten the metal, wire draw plate, ingot form and few others
