One of the best tent reviews I've ever seen. Looking at a tent and showing it put up out of the bag has a place but it isn't a review. Brilliant review of a very good tent. Your fix on the corner poles is transformational. Well done! Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback we really appreciate it and it’s great to hear you found the review helpful 👌 all the best - BR
It’s smaller and heavier than my Fjallraven abisko 1. But the Robens SL1 is as tough as old boots. I really like the spy window which allows me to peep through in the morning to check the weather. I super glued in the end caps. I was lucky because one came off first time I used it but I found it. It really is a stupid design fault of this tent that should be put right by Robens. It really is a good tent though. Great review.
👍
Great great review!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My god i wish all reviews were like this, seeing someone who actually used his tent and talk from experience is refreshing Lol, subbed instantly.
Cheers mate! Glad to hear you found some value in the vid, we do make every effort to test gear thoroughly before we review it 👍 thanks for the sun and all the best - BR
An absolutely fantastic and thorough review.
I actually own this tent and work away from home during the week. I therefore use this tent to keep things affordable.
I pitched it for the first time recently after a long day at work, in decreasing light, in the pouring rain. It pitches outer first, which allows you to keep your kit dry. The inner can be left attached, but because I am usually packing away first thing in the morning before work, it is nearly always put away damp or wet. I therefore always separate the inner from the outer to allow me to dry thoroughly when I get home.
The first time I pitched it, I forgot to wrap the guy lines around the pole, Which wasn’t a big deal, but you can see how much this adds to the tent in windy conditions. Thankfully, that night was not windy, just incredibly wet and the tent did a great job.
I totally agree with all of your other comments especially the inner pockets which are a weird design.
Overall though, an excellent tent and well worth the money.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the tent and positive feedback, we really appreciate it, as do other viewers. Yeah it’s a great tent and is great value for money. All the best - BR
Just use locktite on the pole ends, no need for adding elastic
Thanks for the tip and all the best - BR
Easily the clearest and most concise tent review that I have watched.
Thanks for the feedback, really helps up going forward. Glad to hear you found it useful as well 👌 all the best - BR
Robens kit is good value and quality. I have the Arrowhead 1.
They don’t always get it right in our opinion robens, but for the money the starlight is compelling bit of kit! All the best - BR
Great review, honest and detailed loving the content keep it up boys
Nice one mate, really appreciate the support! All the best 👍
BEST tent review I've ever seen!!! Thank you!!!
Thanks mate, glad to hear you found it useful 🙏
Brilliant review, had mine for over 2 years , love this tent .
Great value for money and with a few mods it becomes a solid all round tent! All the best - BR
Thank you very much for this good honest long term review of this tent. Have been looking at this tent for a while now and I think you explained very well what I wanted to know. Thanks again!
Thanks for watching and glad to hear it’s helped answer some of your questions 👍 All the best - BR
Thanks I have this tent and was thinking of the pole mod it really makes it better .. great review enjoyed it diolch
It’s an essential mod on this tent mate, makes such a massive difference. Hopefully the vid helps you make it 👍 All the best - BR
Very thorough review! Has been very helpful thanks
Thanks for the feedback, glad to hear it was useful! All the best - BR
Solid review. Much appreciated 👍
Cheers pal 👌
brilliant in depth review.
Glad to hear you found some value in the vid. All the best - BR
What an excellent review on this type of tent - the best one I’ve watched to date!
Thanks for feedback mate it’s much appreciated, glad it was useful! All the best - BR
A great tent!
I used mine last weekend on the highest point of The Mendip Hills in Storm Gerrit.
Held fantastic, kept me warm as there is no mesh, and shed the 60+mph gusts perfectly!
All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧
It’s got some staying power this tent! With it being such a small profile the wind never seems to grip it. Glad to hear you got through it safely. We camped the tail end of it in the Moelwyns, hopefully have the vid out in the next week or two. All the best - BR
@@borderraiders Cool. Look forwards to it.
Oh no mesh? I was about to buy this 😢
@@xTitsUpx I meant a solid mesh not a fine mesh. A solid mesh keeps more heat in, a fine mesh is better for venting.
This is an excellent review of the Starlight 1. I got mine some years ago and its proven to be a decent tent at a low cost. Great tips for the set-up. Dont really use mine anymore due always wanting something different like the scarp 1 with more room. But even this isn't perfect for the money. In fairness Robens make some decent.
Cheers Gary and yes totally agree. We also have the Scarp 1 and it does mean you naturally reach for that with its better livability, when compared to the Starlight. But at half the price of the Scarp, it’s a puncher at sub £200 strong tent. All the best - BR
This is a brilliant review - thank you so much. I have the Starlite 2. I bought out as it was robust and stood out as different. But you’ve nailed the only weakness I perceive (that affects me), which are the dodgy corner pole cappings. Discovered the hard way on a fairly benign early camp - lost one during pitching. Christ knows how I found it, and took massive care with them after that. Excellent review you’ve done here to show this and your mod. Life is a compromise, and beyond that issue, I really love this little tent for the money, value and strength. Thank you. Subscribed 👍
Thanks mate we really appreciate it 👌you are spot on, it’s a great value, robust tent with a few downsides that can be managed if you are willing. The end pole cappings are genuinely terrible and you done well to rectify the situation out on a camp 👌 all the best - BR
good review Sir, agree with you these are a wonderfully strong tent, like you, do the mods of poles and it helps sooooo much, I personally love the small interior space as it's so easy to keep warm in cold weather. In really strong winds I also loop additional guys around the middle pole and over the end pole fittings pegging out down each side of the tent. the Roof hatch is awesome, look out at the worldfrom the comfort of your sleeping bag.
Yeah it’s a really snug and particularly warm tent. Thanks for insight aswel well, I’m sure people will look into this 👌 all the best in the new year - BR
Amazing review guys, a really great walkthrough of it!
As for the lack of a 2-way zip in the door, I find that the top vent compensates that, since you can open it so wide (good enough for cooking, and great for just sitting inside watching the storm rage!).
Since I have the Starlight 2, it's a bit heavier, but for my humble size at 172 cm it's a palace. I always have my rucksack inside with me standing on its side, and by doing that I also have a much more spacious vestibule (let's face it, it's really not a 2 person tent). And when it comes to comparing weight, weather resistance and space, the Starlight 2 might actually be more of a challanger to the Hilleberg Soulo than a "more internally spacious Akto".
Some really good points you make here! We agree the ventilation on this tent is absolutely top notch, we think the Akto could really benefit from a similar top vent. Interesting to hear your thoughts on the starlight 2 and the room it provides, hopefully it can help inform others who are maybe considering this model. It does look a lot more liveable and comfortable 👍 Thanks for your contribution and all the best - BR
Great video 😎
Thanks for sharing.. 👍
Thanks for watching 👍 All the best - BR
Great review of the tent. Have used the Starlight 2 which is a good bit heavier but might actually get it back out and spend some more time with it. It is a underrated tent and folks get put off by the weight and packing up. If you do the mods you mention it makes packing the tent so much easier. I like the polyester fabric as it feels far more secure in bad weather and high winds. Doesn't seem to flap as bad as thin silnylon tents.
Cheers Ray, glad to hear you found some value in it. Whilst we don’t have experience with the Starlight 2 it looks a great deal more practical than the 1 given the additional space. Agreed on the fabric, it feels solid and it’s nice that it doesn’t absorb much water, it almost has a waxy feel to it, hard to describe! For the weight and the fact it can do a job in reasonable winter conditions, we think it’s justifiable all things considered. All the best in the new year - BR
I am 6 ft tall so went for the Roben's Starlight 2 which I did apply the modification to. Nice review of an often forgotten tent.
Should do a job for you the Starlight 2! Thanks for watching. All the best - BR
@@borderraiders yes it has, along with my Lanshan 1, Terra Nova Voyager and Nortent Vern 1 PC. I love tents!
Did the Starlight 2 better ? @@borderraiders n i'm looking for a new tent now and your video help me so much thank you
and could you help me understand step 2 of the modification please ? haha i"m sorry, not sure to understand clearly and don't want to make any mistake if buying this tent,@@borderraiders
@@wassilylair7534 glad to hear it’s helped you out, for a better understanding of the end pole modification check out this vid: czcams.com/video/cp3p70p-pK8/video.htmlsi=cEKh4E7Cai8lJ16U
that is a brilliant review, can't think of a single question about this tent, as a motorbiker, lid, big kit, boots etc, its a bit small, any recommendations for a little larger 1 man at a similar price point.
You could take a look at the Wild country Helm 1 Compact. It’s not massive but it has enough room in all the right places. Head height is good along with the vestibule space. You also have access to a small storage place on the opposite side to the vestibule where you can store boots and bag, worth checking out. Thanks and all the best - BR
Excellent video! This looks like my perfect first wild camping tent. I'm definitely considering buying one after this video. Just a quick question if you don't mind? Is there a way to maybe guy out the door while it's open to help sheild from rain while cooking? Like a little tarp. Perhaps with an extra little pole to help hold it up? If that works it could be a really nice little modification.
Nothing comes to mind on it, only feature would be the cord on the zip, I think this may put street on a fairly delicate feature though. Could potentially look to use some sort of tent friendly adhesive patches. All the best - BR
I have a second guy off the middle ple to the end poles, I clip the door to the guy line with clothes pegs and gives you an extra area to cook in. granted not as easy to get in but gives you options
Love your content. Where did you get the pole end caps please.
Thanks mate glad to hear you enjoy it 🙌 On Amazon, if you search something like tent pole end plugs, it should throw up a few. All the best - BR
Hi which size end plugs please? 8.5mm 9..5.mm 11mm 13mm?
Hi mate I think it’s the 8.5mm but you’d need to check the official robens specs
@@borderraiders thanks👍 your correct
I'm 46, fairly fit, and only 5ft. Would I carry this on longer treks ok?
It’s a really hard question to answer that but if you have a sound level of fitness then 2.3kg for a 4 season tent is perfectly reasonable in our opinion. You have to consider other elements of your kit obviously but again. The tent is well within reasonable spec. All the best - BR
I dont understand why they don't add extra pegging points on the flysheet on the longest stretch between the main pole and end poles
Pretty sure the Starlight 2 does have them on the panels, but for whatever reason they didn’t bother on the 1. To be fair though the panels in the 1 are fairly small along with its profile, whilst the tension is also good, never found to be needing them although it wouldn’t hurt. All the best - BR
Can I have a link for the pole mod please?
4 me 2
If you search on Amazon for like camping or tent pole end caps they should come up. All the best - BR
