Excellent and detailed review. The best in fact. I’ve got the Enan for five years now, and the Akto is next on my list. I’ve also got the nammatj 3 gt and the Unnan, which is my favorite of all, and in honesty could now never take a step back with ANY other maker as to the quality and attention to details is so amazing with Hilleberg tents. Price? Who cares. We only live once.
There is so much interest in these two tents among the hill climbing communities. I thnk many people are interested even if not considering choosing between them to buy, but because they provide a market leader point of comparison for the tent they are buying or already have. So very interesting to have the actual tents compared side by side in detail so one can comprehend features, livability, and 3 vs 4 season use. Thank you for your effort in posting.
This must be the most comprehensive comparison of these two great tents on YT, and I have seen a lot of these reviews. Personally still think the Akto (which I have) is a great tent after all these decades. Reasonable weight and very strong build. Snow however can be a problem, as the "roof" will sag on to ones face because of the single hoop design. Dome tents are better in winter. Condensation can be a problem, especially with outside temperatures around zero or slightly freezing, when the "dripping cave" effect can spoil your night.
LESSON LEARNED - Wrap a towel around poles so they can be inserted into sleeves DRY. I saw a video where the reviewer of the Unna inserted wet poles into sleeves while it was raining. Later that night the temperature dropped to below freezing & it snowed. The next morning he had a difficult time removing the poles which had frozen to the sleeve material & the pole sections were also frozen together. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.

Great thorough review. The main ‘design flaw’ of the Akto is the drooping inner ends. I have seen someone use their spare pole section to hoist up the outer tent to try to reduce that. The main ‘design flaw’ of the Enan is the lack of an upper wet weather vent. I’ve seen a guy put a clothes peg in the gap between door and zip flap to keep it slightly ajar. As you say, both excellent tents.

I'm just in the process of deciding what tent to buy - my husband will use it too - and have been considering the Enan. I'm not at all an experienced camper but keep coming back to the Hilleberg brand, as I always believe in buying good quality stuff which will last. brilliant video, so comprehensive, by someone who really uses and knows these tents. I have picked up some useful tips for my akto here. Your presentation style is head and shoulders above the rest, and I have watched a lot of videos! Hillebergs are not cheap, but the materials used and the care that goes into making them means they are great value, and I trust mine in bad conditions.
@@WildCampingWelshman yes and when I bought it it was probably much cheaper. You can see how good it still looks at the beginning of my second day on the south down way on my channel. My friend used it. I recently got a BA tiger wall UL2 for my planned AT hike. But the AKTO is amazing in bad weather.

Bin liner over your foot box and I use a chamois like cloth I stole from my mrs. I have one in every tent bag moist and stored in a ziplock. The hillebergs aren’t any worse than another brand if your camping in winter learn to live with its consequences. Perfectly explained video
Thanks for a great comparison between the two tents! I own the Enan, bought it to save weight during at two week trip in Sarek 2019, I didn't want to lug around my Soulo since the weight with food was quite much. I was a little nervous at first on how the Enan would handle bad weather with heavy rain and wind, but during the first three days of the trip we had some really bad weather and the Enan handled it perfect! Towards the end of the trip when we made camp on the border between Sarek and Padjelanta national park the next storm hit us, the only thing I had to do that time was to close one of the ends with the kerlon fabric, as you demonstrated, because it rained horizontally 😂 I also have some extra guylines at the ends and it really helps keeping the inner and outer fabric tensioned and separated during bad weather.

Thanks Mattias for your inputs. I'm considering the Padjelanta trail for next year and the Enan is a consideration as the hike will be over 10 days. I own an Akto and a Nallo 2 but as you mentioned, the weight over longer hikes is a major concern. In a CZcams video by Tom Heaney, at Tom Heaney Adventure, he recommends to put a 10 mm pole from a Nammatj 2 tent. I'd also consider 3 mm guy lines and more of them plus larger pegs, just to be on the safe side.
@@larsmoller870 you don’t need the stronger poles and thicker guy lines. Enan is super sturdy as is. Put 2 extra guylines where the toggles are in head/ foot end and use the bigger Y pegs from hilleberg for stronger grip.
An excellent comparison of the 2 tents. I am looking at a new hike tent. Had not thought about the Enan, so it is good to get a good rundown on both tents.

You can absolutely tell that was a good day's work there Jiffy - a superbly comprehensive vid once more - definitive even. One I've been eagerly awaiting! At 6'1" I do find the Enan lacking in headroom (especially after getting used to the Soulo) so that tip of the upper toggles is obvious but priceless, thank you. You are so right about condensation too - I've slept open air with a small tarp just sheltering me from the wind on one side, not even really covering me, and it still dripped with condensation by morning. I'll admit to still being puzzled by your comment a year ago about the Enan being an expensive bivvy bag - I interpreted it as you not liking it, but I guess now it was a joke that went over my head! Cheers Rich. I’m pretty sure I know what you mean by the other film, which I have seen and thought missed a few bits. I’m glad you realised I was only joking about it being a bivvy 😉 They are both great tents and with a bit of “adjustment” can suit most people (I’m 5ft 10). These type of films are time consuming to make but worth it because I have often looked for other ones which always seem to miss the details I was looking for. I hope you are well mate. I love my Akto. I know, 500 grams is a lot actually. But I love the extra features you get with the Akto, the door vent, the 4 season inner tent, the fully open sheltered vents on each end. There are sleeping mats that weigh a kilo. And I'm not dissing the Enan, it looks like a great tent. But I've been so happy with my Akto. My first experience with it- like you, I bought a used one from Ebay- was in Ullapool. I went for a hike down from Ullapool to Gairloch in Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands. When I arrived in Ullapool, there was 50 MPH winds. I pitched the Akto in that wind and I remember some guys nearby who were hanging out in their land rover laughing at me. But I pitched that tent in 2 minutes flat and I was inside and dry and warm and although the wind literally pushed the outer into the inner and onto my face quiet often, that tent stood up and took it. I moved out the next morning very confident and that tent has never let me down. It has a small footprint and can be pitched anywhere your body will comfortably fit. I know the world has moved on since the Akto entered the market, but this is still a great tent, and you can't really go wrong if you are faced with $300 on ebay for an Akto and $1,000 for an Enan. Save the 700 and spend it on your sleeping system. The Akto won't let you down. That's a fact. It don't matter what you walk into, you can weather it out in that tent.
Thank you, ive had the the tent (Enan) for a couple of years now. Its working well for my expeditions in the alpine areas of sweden. The condence problems you mention only accurs when the temperature is about -2 to -10, when doors closed. If you keep the outer tent door open its no problem.
Really enjoyed this. Just got and used a new Nammatj 2 GT and absolutely love it and will buy Hilleberg again. I think for a lot of folks these tents are overkill but for those that camp in the worst weather the price of these tents is so worth it.Cheers.
I've bought the Enan tent on internet a couple of days ago. Can't wait to get it. Will use it on a bikepacking trip here in Norway this summer. I'm only 170cm tall, think this tent will be perfect for my needs. After watching this video I'm even more convinced I've made the right choice ordering this tent. Meget fornøyd med teltet, angrer ikke et sekund på at jeg kjøpte det. Perfekt størrelse til meg. Syklet til Lofoten forrige sommer med det. Uvær på Andøya på natten, fossregnet, lynte og tordnet, null kondens alt holdt seg tørt. Står godt imot vinden og. Jeg klarer å sitte oppreist i det, og får stappet inn et exped oppblåsbart liggeunderlag 7cm tykt, 183cm x 65cm. Så mye mer er det ikke plass til, akkurat så at liggeunderlaget går inn på bredden, men perfekt til mitt bruk og sykkelturene mine. Forteltet er stort nok til å stappe sykkelbaggene og klærne inn dit, som sagt meget fornøyd, blir å bruke det igjen denne sommeren og på en ny sykkeltur 😊

That tent will be extremely tough if pegged down correctly and the ground is good. I’ve had my red label one out in some strong winds and it held up fine 👍🏻
I’ve experienced strong winds in the Summer months mate. I check the MWIS website before I go and take the tent I think most appropriate to those conditions. If it’s forecast strong gusts, it’s the Soulo 👍🏻
Great vid Jiffy. On the back of your Peak District / Enan vid I picked one up myself - I’m glad I did. I personally added a 10mm pole for that little bit of extra rigidity (with a tiny weight penalty) and it’s actually done the job well. Feels even more solid. Great tent. They both are.

Whatever the material is on the akto it loves moisture . I've set one up on a dry day with footprint and not slept in it and insides have been soaking . I've set one up on coast before and outside was covered I'm moisture in minutes , I love my akto but moisture is without a doubt a problem that I've had in no other tent . Great review , in fact best on CZcams 👍

Of the two I think I’m leaning towards the Enan, as I’m unlikely to be out in snow and it looks to be stronger than almost any other 3-season tent (I’ve watched a lot of other tent videos lately). I’ve read about the ability to create a storm opening on the Enan using a clothes peg (thanks to the ‘Westonfront’ Wordpress blog) by unzipping the door from the top and clipping the clothes peg to zip protector and the back of the peg holds the main door open. I’m planning to go bikepacking with my Brompton and I’m looking for something lighter than my TN Ultra Quasar.
Watched far more of this than I should of done. I have ZERO interest in buying either of these tents, but what an absolutely epic review. Remarkably good.

Made a big improvement to my AKTO by replacing the small mesh vent window with that whole part being a zip down (2 zips) mesh panel / inner tent material - Nice views from tent ! Also a tyvek footprint that extends out past the entrance ( that triangle bit can be folded back at night / when outer door is closed. Also bought a Nammatj 2 10mm pole to use with the Akto. (my original version has KERLON 15 material - ie mid way between a Red & Black Label tent) Tip - to make more space above face, put rucksack at head end instead of foot end, i put pillow on top of partially filled sack.
Hello and very good video. I got rid of my Akto because when I was lying on my side in my sleeping bag, the inner tent would lie on my shoulder and really wet or dampened my sleeping bag. Found the inner to low. So switched to the Soulo which has steeper sides as you know. I now use Easton or Alpkit round steaks for a lot of my wild camping now because of boggy ground and heather which I find a lot better. Really enjoyed watching. Atb Steve 👍

Thanks for a very good and comprehensive comparison. This will help me to decide in favor of adding an Enan tent for hikes longer than 6 days (mainly based on a comparison between equipment weight and food weight) in snow free conditions. Pls try the recommendation by Tom Heaney to use a 10 mm pole from a Nammatj 2 tent. Adds a lot of extra strength with a weight addition of less than 50 grams.
I recently bought the Enan, thanks in large part to your windy camping trip in the Peak District. I'd not noticed the additional guy out points at both ends on the Enan. I'll be attaching some guyout lines at those points, just in case. I'm camping at elevations above 8,000' where it is often strong gusty winds at night. Much to my surprise 10 days ago I woke up in the morning with snow on the Enan & Mother Nature treated me to a beautiful snowy winter wonderland. I like being able to pitch the inner, outer, & footprint simultaneously & not having to fool around with small plastic clips that all my other tents came with to attach the fly to the inner. Pitching my Enan in strong gusty winds is no problem. My Enan is dark Green. Same as yours. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.

Shannon, in the Seattle office, confirmed that my tent did indeed, come with the 70D Triple Coated Polyurethane floor material that is used for the floor of the Akto. Apparently sometime in February 2020 Hilleberg made the decision to use the same floor material for the Akto & Enan. The Hilleberg website hasn't been updated to show the change. What a good review 🙂. I have only just bought an Akto, secondhand off eBay, previous owner had only used it a couple of times so it is in really good condition. It has been a much wanted tent for too long. I’ve read all the comments about condensation issues, but my previous two backpacking tents were the same and like you said, a wipe round with a microfibre cloth is little trouble. I find opening everything up while you eat your breakfast is usually good enough to mean everything is dry when you pack it. Glad George is still around 🤗, I did wonder whether his behaviour on the previous video meant he ended up in the pot 🤣🤭

As Always a really well made video. I use the Enan and Rogen all year round just for that reason you mentioned. Condensation and ventilation. I’m a large guy (186cm & 110kg) and the condensation is a problem. Well made video 👍
Thank you. I just deal with the condensation as best I can, it’s a problem in any tent if the conditions are right (or wrong). I’m only 5ft 10ins (176cm) so have a bit of extra room at either end. 👍🏻
Really interested to hear more about the Rogen - I'm selling my Niak with the aim of going to a Rogen for the extra space. I've found my Niak, with the scalloped fly to be the best 'low condensation' tent I've ever used. I was hoping for the same from the second version of the Rogen with the same fly design.
A good perspective on these two very highly regarded models. I used to use the older version Akto, really liked particular features, but had felt a bit claustrophobic. Last year I got an Enan, so far used for cycle touring, it is a roomy, cosy and frankly quite warm tent and I will be using it for typical UK four season. I also like the footprint of the Enan for finding a pitch in tighter spaces. Being quite compact, I use a lightweight sleeping bag cover for condensation (plus adds a little extra warmth), which is not really an issue and the fabric dissipates moisture effectively the following morning. Like you mention, I always look for ways to lighten my load and the Enan fulfills this, without the need to go into ultra light weight where a shelter is concerned.

Bin liner over your foot box and I use a chamois like cloth I stole from my mrs. I have one in every tent bag moist and stored in a ziplock. The hillebergs aren’t any worse than another brand if your camping in winter learn to live with its consequences. Perfectly explained video
Thanks for a great comparison between the two tents! I own the Enan, bought it to save weight during at two week trip in Sarek 2019, I didn't want to lug around my Soulo since the weight with food was quite much. I was a little nervous at first on how the Enan would handle bad weather with heavy rain and wind, but during the first three days of the trip we had some really bad weather and the Enan handled it perfect! Towards the end of the trip when we made camp on the border between Sarek and Padjelanta national park the next storm hit us, the only thing I had to do that time was to close one of the ends with the kerlon fabric, as you demonstrated, because it rained horizontally 😂 I also have some extra guylines at the ends and it really helps keeping the inner and outer fabric tensioned and separated during bad weather.

Thanks Mattias for your inputs. I'm considering the Padjelanta trail for next year and the Enan is a consideration as the hike will be over 10 days. I own an Akto and a Nallo 2 but as you mentioned, the weight over longer hikes is a major concern. In a CZcams video by Tom Heaney, at Tom Heaney Adventure, he recommends to put a 10 mm pole from a Nammatj 2 tent. I'd also consider 3 mm guy lines and more of them plus larger pegs, just to be on the safe side.
@@larsmoller870 you don’t need the stronger poles and thicker guy lines. Enan is super sturdy as is. Put 2 extra guylines where the toggles are in head/ foot end and use the bigger Y pegs from hilleberg for stronger grip.

You can absolutely tell that was a good day's work there Jiffy - a superbly comprehensive vid once more - definitive even. One I've been eagerly awaiting! At 6'1" I do find the Enan lacking in headroom (especially after getting used to the Soulo) so that tip of the upper toggles is obvious but priceless, thank you. You are so right about condensation too - I've slept open air with a small tarp just sheltering me from the wind on one side, not even really covering me, and it still dripped with condensation by morning. I'll admit to still being puzzled by your comment a year ago about the Enan being an expensive bivvy bag - I interpreted it as you not liking it, but I guess now it was a joke that went over my head! Anyway, big thumbs up, a video that needed doing (there is another out there but this went much more in depth). Cheers mate. Rich. 👍

They are both great tents and with a bit of “adjustment” can suit most people (I’m 5ft 10).
These type of films are time consuming to make but worth it because I have often looked for other ones which always seem to miss the details I was looking for.

I love my Akto. I know, 500 grams is a lot actually. But I love the extra features you get with the Akto, the door vent, the 4 season inner tent, the fully open sheltered vents on each end. There are sleeping mats that weigh a kilo. And I'm not dissing the Enan, it looks like a great tent. But I've been so happy with my Akto. My first experience with it- like you, I bought a used one from Ebay- was in Ullapool. I went for a hike down from Ullapool to Gairloch in Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands. When I arrived in Ullapool, there was 50 MPH winds. I pitched the Akto in that wind and I remember some guys nearby who were hanging out in their land rover laughing at me. But I pitched that tent in 2 minutes flat and I was inside and dry and warm and although the wind literally pushed the outer into the inner and onto my face quiet often, that tent stood up and took it. I moved out the next morning very confident and that tent has never let me down. It has a small footprint and can be pitched anywhere your body will comfortably fit.
I know the world has moved on since the Akto entered the market, but this is still a great tent, and you can't really go wrong if you are faced with $300 on ebay for an Akto and $1,000 for an Enan. Save the 700 and spend it on your sleeping system. The Akto won't let you down. That's a fact. It don't matter what you walk into, you can weather it out in that tent.

Thank you, ive had the the tent (Enan) for a couple of years now. Its working well for my expeditions in the alpine areas of sweden. The condence problems you mention only accurs when the temperature is about -2 to -10, when doors closed. If you keep the outer tent door open its no problem.

Jeg klarer å sitte oppreist i det, og får stappet inn et exped oppblåsbart liggeunderlag 7cm tykt, 183cm x 65cm.
Så mye mer er det ikke plass til, akkurat så at liggeunderlaget går inn på bredden, men perfekt til mitt bruk og sykkelturene mine.
Forteltet er stort nok til å stappe sykkelbaggene og klærne inn dit, som sagt meget fornøyd, blir å bruke det igjen denne sommeren og på en ny sykkeltur 😊
Very pleased with how it performed, no condensation, and stable in winds, and the size is perfect for my needs, expensive but well worth the cost.

That tent will be extremely tough if pegged down correctly and the ground is good. I’ve had my red label one out in some strong winds and it held up fine 👍🏻

I’ve experienced strong winds in the Summer months mate. I check the MWIS website before I go and take the tent I think most appropriate to those conditions. If it’s forecast strong gusts, it’s the Soulo 👍🏻
Great vid Jiffy. On the back of your Peak District / Enan vid I picked one up myself - I’m glad I did.
I personally added a 10mm pole for that little bit of extra rigidity (with a tiny weight penalty) and it’s actually done the job well. Feels even more solid.

Whatever the material is on the akto it loves moisture . I've set one up on a dry day with footprint and not slept in it and insides have been soaking . I've set one up on coast before and outside was covered I'm moisture in minutes , I love my akto but moisture is without a doubt a problem that I've had in no other tent .

Many thanks for this video comparison. Of the two I think I’m leaning towards the Enan, as I’m unlikely to be out in snow and it looks to be stronger than almost any other 3-season tent (I’ve watched a lot of other tent videos lately). I’ve read about the ability to create a storm opening on the Enan using a clothes peg (thanks to the ‘Westonfront’ Wordpress blog) by unzipping the door from the top and clipping the clothes peg to zip protector and the back of the peg holds the main door open. I’m planning to go bikepacking with my Brompton and I’m looking for something lighter than my TN Ultra Quasar.

Made a big improvement to my AKTO by replacing the small mesh vent window with that whole part being a zip down (2 zips) mesh panel / inner tent material - Nice views from tent !
Also a tyvek footprint that extends out past the entrance ( that triangle bit can be folded back at night / when outer door is closed. Also bought a Nammatj 2 10mm pole to use with the Akto. (my original version has KERLON 15 material - ie mid way between a Red & Black Label tent)
Tip - to make more space above face, put rucksack at head end instead of foot end, i put pillow on top of partially filled sack.
Hello and very good video. I got rid of my Akto because when I was lying on my side in my sleeping bag, the inner tent would lie on my shoulder and really wet or dampened my sleeping bag. Found the inner to low. So switched to the Soulo which has steeper sides as you know. I now use Easton or Alpkit round steaks for a lot of my wild camping now because of boggy ground and heather which I find a lot better. Really enjoyed watching. Atb Steve 👍

Thanks for a very good and comprehensive comparison. This will help me to decide in favor of adding an Enan tent for hikes longer than 6 days (mainly based on a comparison between equipment weight and food weight) in snow free conditions. Pls try the recommendation by Tom Heaney to use a 10 mm pole from a Nammatj 2 tent. Adds a lot of extra strength with a weight addition of less than 50 grams.

I recently bought the Enan, thanks in large part to your windy camping trip in the Peak District. I'd not noticed the additional guy out points at both ends on the Enan. I'll be attaching some guyout lines at those points, just in case. I'm camping at elevations above 8,000' where it is often strong gusty winds at night. Much to my surprise 10 days ago I woke up in the morning with snow on the Enan & Mother Nature treated me to a beautiful snowy winter wonderland. I like being able to pitch the inner, outer, & footprint simultaneously & not having to fool around with small plastic clips that all my other tents came with to attach the fly to the inner. Pitching my Enan in strong gusty winds is no problem. My Enan is dark Green. Same as yours.

Shannon, in the Seattle office, confirmed that my tent did indeed, come with the 70D Triple Coated Polyurethane floor material that is used for the floor of the Akto. Apparently sometime in February 2020 Hilleberg made the decision to use the same floor material for the Akto & Enan.
The Hilleberg website hasn't been updated to show the change.

What a good review 🙂. I have only just bought an Akto, secondhand off eBay, previous owner had only used it a couple of times so it is in really good condition. It has been a much wanted tent for too long. I’ve read all the comments about condensation issues, but my previous two backpacking tents were the same and like you said, a wipe round with a microfibre cloth is little trouble. I find opening everything up while you eat your breakfast is usually good enough to mean everything is dry when you pack it. Glad George is still around 🤗, I did wonder whether his behaviour on the previous video meant he ended up in the pot 🤣🤭

As Always a really well made video. I use the Enan and Rogen all year round just for that reason you mentioned. Condensation and ventilation. I’m a large guy (186cm & 110kg) and the condensation is a problem. Well made video 👍
Thank you. I just deal with the condensation as best I can, it’s a problem in any tent if the conditions are right (or wrong). I’m only 5ft 10ins (176cm) so have a bit of extra room at either end. 👍🏻
Really interested to hear more about the Rogen - I'm selling my Niak with the aim of going to a Rogen for the extra space. I've found my Niak, with the scalloped fly to be the best 'low condensation' tent I've ever used. I was hoping for the same from the second version of the Rogen with the same fly design.
A good perspective on these two very highly regarded models. I used to use the older version Akto, really liked particular features, but had felt a bit claustrophobic. Last year I got an Enan, so far used for cycle touring, it is a roomy, cosy and frankly quite warm tent and I will be using it for typical UK four season. I also like the footprint of the Enan for finding a pitch in tighter spaces. Being quite compact, I use a lightweight sleeping bag cover for condensation (plus adds a little extra warmth), which is not really an issue and the fabric dissipates moisture effectively the following morning. Like you mention, I always look for ways to lighten my load and the Enan fulfills this, without the need to go into ultra light weight where a shelter is concerned.
