Me too man. As a kid Future Trunks appearance and defeat of Frieza totally floored me, even now when he says 'Ahh so you must be Frieza' I get the most intense chills still, I swear Future Trunks first appearance is the best first appearance in a manga/anime ever. It simply can't be topped.
Michel van der Linden well the English dub made all the characters a lot more provocative. Trunks in japanese, both in cell arc and the zamasu arc, was always about saving his future and helping mankind. However, Funimation didn't have access to the best japanese translations back when they first started dubbing, so a lot of times they added flair to the characters to make up for that.
it also helps that trunks WAS actually that cocky when he first showed up, but only because he knew he would be able to handle frieza. When he came back things were out of his control because the enemies were much stronger than him and he didnt know what would happen beyond that point
not really. they didnt tone him down he just knew he'd kill frieza easily but knew he wouldnt beat Android 17 and 18 as easily. thats the reason he returned in the past, for help.

Sure we can all agree he was cocky regarding Freeza, and uncertain regarding the androids, but he didnt just become insecure; he became overloaded on daddy issues to the point of it being ridiculous. I get it, he wanted his dads approval. But the moment he realised Vegeta was an outright asshole he should have put that on the backburner. In fact given what Vegeta did and didn't do, Trunks should have actually just challenged him into combat. If not for respect then to at least get it through his skull that he isn't the powerhouse he made himself out to be.
