I had a chao that I loved as a kid. I never had a pet so every day after school I would go to the chao garden and play with Angel, my chao that... never became a hero. I fed it and loved it and pet it and spent so much time with it, every single day.
And then it died. I thought it was evolving but it was just gone. That was how I learned about death as a kid. Sometimes the things we love are just gone.
And now, as a twenty six year old adult, I learn that my chao that I loved with all my heart was never happy.

I had a dream once where they expanded the SA2 chao raising and gave it a competitive fighting game that was like Gunz where based on your chaos abilities you could just curb stomp other player controlled chao. Idk. I can't remember much about it but it was an awesome dream.

@@relaxalax well i'm actually pretty sure there is a cheat menu you can download that can skip time.. i had it before for the exact reason.. it could be pretty cheaty as you could edit everything about your chao's aswell but i never used it apart for debug reasons or to skip time

I've never really thought about how unnecessary it was for Sonic Team to make the Chao Garden so complex. So glad they did, though.
@JayLeeBeanz Same. I was already a Sonic fan (having long enjoyed Sonic 1, 2, 3 and K), but when I later got to take a turn playing SA2B on my cousin's game, it was the Chao that drove me and my sister to save up all our pocket, birthday and Christmas money to buy a Gamecube and the game. We even bought our own memory card before buying the Gamecube and game itself so when we visited our cousin's place we could still play our own save file.
Same, it defined my life.

Tiny chao garden is not in Sonic advance 3 it's in Sonic advance 1 and 2 and Sonic pinball
And unleashed originally was the third adventure (something that 06 couldn't do) but while in the west it's called unleashed on Japan its called sonic world adventure the original title that was changed to unleashed on the west

U forgot to mention that u can raise a chos to look like the sonic characters (sonic, shadow, knuckles, tails, rouge, egg man)I spent so many hours on my Shadow chao, he was a beast
there only sonic and shadow in game you can make there is no tails, rouge,Eggman, Amy chao. to get a real tails chao you have to get another game and gba and that gc to gba cable link. other then that there no way to get the others.

I used to write guides on chao, i was a breeder of sorts and figured out how to make See through Chao yes i said see through as in transparent and they came in multiple colors even just a pair of eyes
Alex Oliver Jr. Transparent Chao weren’t hard to get. You needed the Advanced GBA games and play the Mini Chao Garden there. That’s where you got the gems, sparkly and transparent chao. Once you hatched them you had to transfer them over with a link cable of sorts.
Me and my friends put so much effort into the chao garden. We even had one that was invisible. Just eyes and any hats you gave it.
I had a see-through chao too, but it was a normal-colored transparent Chao.
I also had a completely invisible Chao. The only thing you could see were the eyes, mouth, wings, and any animal parts it had. It was freaky the first time it hatched since I thought it was a dud, then I saw the ball floating around.

I remember very well, hunting the gba games, exporting from SA1 and then getting some hacked ass sonic/tails chao from the jp versions of the games and shit. The jeweled chaos, the shiny and sparkle ones, mix and match, the colors that made no sense and the colors that came from pure specific stats and combinations, I had my aqua transparent neutral chaos chao just because Chaos was my favorite character as a kid, my parents poor electricity bill from me leaving my gc turned on for days…
Good times, I also love that there were the ghost animals and the legendary animals even tho animal parts were ugly as sin, I loved the ghost tails…
You should've mentioned that you can stand in the water while leaving the game on overnight to prevent the Chao from losing happiness (like when they walk up to you for attention but then get ignored), since athere's no action that causes happiness reduction they can do while swimming.
Does drowning reduce their happiness?

I gave my favorite Chao to my childhood friend via GameCube memory card trading, and when I wanted him back he told me “it went in a white egg and disappeared”.
I didn’t believe him back then (because I didn’t know that could happen) but NOPE turns out my Chao lovingly named after Crest toothpaste died alone at my friend’s house.

You know... that only happens if the Chao is being mistreated... if it WASN'T, then the egg would've been a different color and left him an infant again. Only way to freeze the reincarnation cycle is to meet the crazy specific requirements of turning a normal Chao into a Chaos Chao... like those special race opponents at the end of the Hero, Dark, and Special course packs.
This is why you can't trust ANYONE.

Chao Garden could have fixed forces for me. I would be more willing to play minute long levels if doing it would give me stuff for my Chao.

To be honest, that isn't even unreasonable statement.
Forces levels are designed around replayability, but gives you no real reason to wanna do so.
When I was a small kid playing this game, I got rid of my favorite/most time-invested chao through the GBA screen thing all because I read the description of the Goodbye where it says "Your chao will have a happy life in a faraway forest..." and I thought, "I want my chao to be happy, maybe it'll be happier far away without me." So I gave them away, not realizing this feature was really just a way to get rid of chao you didn't want, and then I cried because I missed my chao.
That's how I learned love can be cruel and hard to navigate friends.

Damn I remember spending HOURS playing with chao’s. I went through so many levels over and over just to get animals and chaos drives.
I also remember there being so many guides with bullshit advice. This was my first exposure to the wacky world of internet video game rumors.

I don't think the people who want a stand alone chao garden game understand what made chao garden fun: It gave you an incentive to go back and replay the main stages in SA2 for chaos drives and animals, and since your time was split between the garden and the main game, it drastically reduced the tedium of both: You were constantly taking breaks from one to do the other.
If you had a stand alone chao garden game; or even one attached to a game, but one without as replayable and fun stages as SA2 (and yes, I stand by that SA2's stages are fun: Only rouge's are bad on average), it would quickly become boring and tedious.
I can easily see it doing well as a mobile game.

Merps I enjoyed the werehog bits more than the day levels I think the only bad part is for some reason in the Xbox and ps3 version you don't have a drop shadow making platforming kinda hard I originally played the ps2 version and have recently played the Xbox version and in ps2 combos are more simple but you have a drop shadow and graphics arnt as pretty but in Xbox you can pull off all kinds of awesome moves as well as being able to pick up enemies b4 they despawn and use them the attack other enemies sorry to trail off and this is just my opinion and its totally cool if you don't like the werehog or unleashed this is just my take on it and I also respect that people just don't wanna play a beat em up instead of racing to the goal or homing attacking bots

Imagine how great they could make a chao garden game for the switch? tell all your friends to tweet at SEGA that they should make a chao garden game on the 3ds or switch and maybe they'll realize that it's easy money compared to the resources Sonic Forces took. Perhaps one day you'll be able to race your chao online, or challenge people to pass the time while waiting in line at game/anime conventions

7:14 Actually a chao's alignment CAN be changed when it goes back to infant form. Like say you have a dark chao that's reincarnated, all you have to do is pet them really rapidly and repeatedly so their little antenna thing turns into a heart with a hero character and they'll be influenced REALLY fast. I used to change my Chao's alignment multiple times through different lives.
"I mean from mating, evolving, reincarnating". I played Chao Garden to tiredness (back in the time) and had never watch a chao reincarnating. My guess would be that they all where happy and I didn't ever noticed they did the thing.

I think I heard in an interview that back when Sega was working on Sonic Adventure, Tamagachi and virtual pets were really popular. So, Sega created the Chao Garden as a way to attract players, who were not usually interested in 3D platforms. In fact, the Chao Racing mini-game was designed to help those players transition from the pet raising game to platforming games.
That actually seems like alot of fun! Sega should make that it's own game!

This mode is probably the only reason people remember sonic adventure 2 so well. Because to get the drives and animals you need to play stages so people would just play the good stages over and over which reinforced the good parts of this game.

Sonic adventure 2 battle is my favorite sonic game hands down. I remember grinding out each chao type, maxing stats, beating mini games, beating my chao, creating a class divide amongst them, force feeding them small animals I collected throughout my travels. It was beautiful.
The chao garden is literally the only memory I have about sonic from when I was a kid. I mostly watched my brother play games instead of playing them myself and this was one of the only sonic games we had and I remember this part the most
But the day time levels of Unleashed are so good. Also the Chao Gardens are like the best part of the adventure series. I remember being so angry when my gamecube gave up like a week after I got the golden chao.
One project of mine is to get an S rank in all stats chaos chao. The chaos rank of a particular stat increases one stage when it undergoes its first evolution. So yeah it's been years and im almost on life three. I really should just leave the game on overnight.
JP Back when I was a kid I managed to get an all s-rank Chao on complete accident. Two Chao that had s-ranks in a few of the stats had mate over night to make a Chao that had s-rank in everything except power if I recall correctly. I woke up that morning thinking "where tf did this Chao come from?!?". Over the course of the next few days I turned that little guy into a monster that had 3000+ in every stat except stamina b/c fuck leveling that up to max on anything except a Chaos Chao.
Shadic6098 maxing out stamina is the worst. I've only maxed out stamina on maybe three chaos ever.
JP The highest I ever got was around 50 on my first chaos Chao. You literally never have to max out your stamina stat because your all your other stats should make up for the stamina deficit.

Shadic6098 oh yeah it wasn't necessary at all for the events, but I still wanted lv 99 in everything. I just feed them for hours. Eventually I got into a routine of like 3 levels a day and just kept that up for awhile. Then I made my little brother, who at the time, never had played a videogame, do it instead. He was just happy to finally use the controller for once and took him months to grow bored of it.
