You may or may not be a fan of old movies, but if you are a fan of fashion through the ages then you are almost certainly an admirer of Steve McQueen’s effortlessly cool style. His appearances in a wide range of films in the ’60s and ’70s have made him an icon of that era for both his talent and his style.
    The Early Years
Despite his rugged good looks, cool guy reputation and Hollywood success later in life, Steve McQueen’s youth and early years were punctuated with struggle. The actor known as SteveMcQueen was not, in fact, a “Steve” by birth. Born Terence Steven McQueen in 1930 at the dawn of the Depression, he was abandoned by his mother to be raised until age 8 by his grandparents and an uncle on a farm in rural Missouri. His uncle was one of the few adults in his childhood of whom he had fond memories. He would go on to live with his mother and two successive stepfathers, both of whom were physically abusive. Dyslexia and partial deafness in one ear was also a little-known disadvantage of his youth. In his teenage years, McQueen bounced back and forth between living on the streets, his mother’s home, and his uncle’s farm. His life was one of the beatings, rebelliousness, and petty crime, and he was eventually sent to a boy’s home, the California Junior Boys Republic, where he stayed until the age of 16. The institution left a profound mark on McQueen, and he would go on to support the institution for the rest of his life.
McQueen eventually landed in the Marine Corps, a 4-year experience which was not surprisingly riddled with resistance to authority. After numerous scrapes, demotions, and even a month-long stay in the brig, McQueen committed to the discipline of the Marines and was eventually honorably discharged with positive memories of his time with the service.
    Steve McQueen’s Signature Style
Steve McQueen could not have been nicknamed the “King of Cool” without the requisite wardrobe. Steve McQueen could pull off casual workwear, western attire, and 3-piece suits while looking equally authentic in them all - not many men have that kind of range. He rocked certain nonchalant confidence that is the envy of every man who has perused a style gallery of his most famous looks. He was one of the lucky few men that simply looked good in everything he put on.

Consider: " An enemy of the people" 1864; 100 years before The Great Escape he was the Norwegian scientist / doctor! He dropped a fortune into it but: he contracted for residual's for his family. " They" locked in the can for 12 years before they walked in the courtroom and his family " bought " for -10¢ on the dollar " their est. " Half the % " they " offered the value. Catch aCopy of the movie after you read the book 82 pages: BUT DON'T SEE THE " LIVE PLAY" SOME PHILANDERER IS DRAGING AROUND , IT'S DOGSHT.
IF YOU SEE , "FORD VS FERRARI," YOU GOTTA SEE McQUEEN'S, " Le Mon".
Then see the other 16 films, IN FULL: GOOD COPY?
Can't wait to meet him again, soon. 50 was too early from asbestos ~ after the razor's edge he danced on?

The model known as the steve mcqueen (explorer II mentioned) was never actually worn by him but in passing he mentioned he liked it. As of today no one has found evidence saying he owned one. Awesome video I love how you reference specific pieces as well as giving his broad style sense!

He is one of the reasons why I like the Harrington jacket, I have my heart set on the Baracuta Harrington I want to get the version that doesn't have the elasticated waistband. I think the G4, a bit like the James Bond jacket in Quantum of Solace.

The film Bullitt was stylish all round: clothes, sharp haircuts, cars, music and who can forget a very stylish Jacqueline Bissett.
It was made at a time when hippies were flocking to San Francisco though in all viewings of it I never saw one.
McQueen was the star, but he had superb support from Robert Vaughn and Simon Oakland, not to mention Bissett and bad guys Paul Genge and Bill Hickman.
Also spot Georg Stanford Brown as a doctor, and Norman Fell too.

A few months ago I found a genuine navy blue Barracuta G9 Harrington with original Fraser tartan lining from the sixties in a second hand shop for 10 quid. Couldn't believe my luck since I'd been looking for one for years given that two of my biggest fashion icons are James Dean and McQueen. It's in perfect condition apart from a couple of small rips in the lining and I've worn it almost every day since...

I have so many jackets, that I don't have room for another one, but a g9 bottle green with the Fraser tartan lining is the one I'd probably get. The corduroy one is the nicest IMHO, but cost as much as a good leather jacket from another brand.
The g9s are beautiful and people say they last for many years.

    • @oliverholmes-gunning5372
      @oliverholmes-gunning5372 Před rokem +1

@@razor6552 hahaha yeah, I was pretty pleased with it. It's amazing what you can find in second hand shops if you search long enough and have a basic idea of what to look for. I've found some absolutely fantastic items over the years, silk ties, designer suits, premium quality shirts... and I doubt I've ever spent more than 30-40 quid on a single item. Even got a full morning suit (black tailcoat, grey waistcoat, salt and pepper trousers) from Moss Bros for £25 once. Probably my best ever buy though was a cashmere overcoat from Brook Taverner for £5, which I later found out retailed at over £1200 brand new.
So yeah, I don't know what it's like elsewhere but if you're in the UK and you have a couple of days to spare it is absolutely 100% worth spending them in the charity shops (Cancer Research always seems to yield the best finds, followed by British Heart Foundation and Oxfam- no idea why, but it's been my experience over the years). You can get a whole new wardrobe at a tenth of the price or less (and of course the wealthier the area the better the yield, as a rule I would focus on the ones down South and especially around the posh parts of London- had a mate who used to go to a charity shop in the district that Eric Clapton lived in, he used to pick up Clapton's old jackets for like 50 quid, it was insane).

Eric Clayton's jacket! Quite a find.
I've never got a really amazing deal at a thrift shop. However I saw a Harris tweed for about 9 dollars, but it was too small.
My best deal was a new $300 Nautica corduroy sports jacket marked down about four times. Then marked way down just before the retailer went out of business...14 dollars. My best clothing deal.

Great video, just a minor correction on the watches - Steve's classic watch was the Rolex Submariner 5512 (also a Bond Watch from the Roger Moore films) though the Explorer 2 has been nicknamed the "Steve McQueen" there is little evidence he actually wore one.

Hey guys, in an effort t o find someone who has a similar frame so I can see how certain styles look like, I think Steve is a close match for me.
My question though is, do yous know either Steve's measurements (chest, waist, weight, or similar) or his jacket (or suit's) sizes.
All I could find was that he was 5'10" and a very lean mesomorph and a very natural build (pre-steroid or similar drug abuse), which is very similar to mine.
Thanks Sven, and KYLE: great job with the info and how you present it. I hope to see you appear more often. Cheers.

While McQueen wasn't actually *my* favorite actor, I agree that his style is still pretty applicable today, especially his taste in casual wear.
I will also tell you this: "The Great Escape" is my favorite war movie, hands-down, and its epic theme music is like a personal anthem for me.

"you can dress like Steve McQueen but you will never look like him" ~ fredo1070. Agree 100%. But, if you want to wear a Rolex like Steve McQueen's stick with the Submariner 5513. There is no evidence (like a photograph) that he wore an Explorer II. None. Even the two photos shown in this video (6:48) are Subs.

@@mb8kr @Dakvayli Ken. While your statement is valid it can't be applied broad brush. A number of men don't need to have Steve McQueen as a role model, my sixty years experience in Corporate sales has taught me that many people lack the ability to visualise. For example the jackets that McQueen wore cover a range of styles that all men may not be familiar with.
But seeing the illustrations used in this video, they may enjoy simply using McQueen as a starting point, which isn't the same as a Role Model. Phil.

I have not been able to find out why the 1655 was nicknamed the Steve McQueen because you're right, there's no evidence he ever wore one. Tons of pictures of him wearing his personal watch, the Ref. 5513, though. This is why I bought one. And of course it's the closest I'll ever get to him. But I can try.

Looking good at University is more about attitude than style and fashion is often driven by peer group pressure.
As this video shows, the starting point is to first dress to please yourself. Phil

Dean Martin was also known as King of Cool though I don’t know if it had to do with his presence and attitude or his fashion sense. Still I’d like to see an analysis of Dean Martin’s sense of style. I hope you’ll explore that. Thank you.

He was also a friend and student of Bruce Lee. And late in life Billy Graham led him to faith in Christ. Graham was with him right as he was being wheeled into the operating room for his cancer. He died on the operating table. But he finally found the peace he was looking for, for so long.

These "How To Dress Like [Famous Person Or Character] videos are interesting. I am curious as to when The Gentleman's Gazette will take a look at the dapper, diminutive Belgian: Hercule Poirot as portrayed by David Suchet? What other actor's/character's styles might we look forward to seeing examined in the future?
