The late great Terry Kath
Terry Kath, yes a beast. The whole band was world-class. Even Jimi Hendrix thought so. He loved Chicago and they would have joined forces if he had lived - "Their guitar player..he's better than me."
The song was written at 25 or 26 minutes before 4 am. 25 or 6 to 4
I understand it now. Lol thanks
He’d been up all night, because he had writer’s block, but knew the album needed one more song. Hence, “Searching for something to say.”
Actual quote on Terry Kath: "He's plays the 6 string guitar better than I do. He's the greatest guitar player in the universe."
- Jimi Hendrix
The thing that makes this almost criminal is, that solo was shot from to far back and didn't zoom in to catch any of that awesome string work he did.
I definitely feel the same. Like I need to see it up live and personal
From the same concert try "I'm a man". It's a cover but they do it so well!
"Beginnings" from the same concert is epic as well. Early Chicago is Amazing!!!
That incredible guitarist is the late great Terry Kath. Go dig up their debut album when they were known as The Chicago Transit Authority and play these two tracks: "Introduction" and "Poem 58". Guitar player Terry Kath wrote "Introduction" and sang lead vocals. He was called "The White Ray Charles" by his bandmates. Soulful baritone voice! "Poem 58" is nine minutes of PURE FUNK led by Terry Kath on guitar, Danny Seraphine on drums, and Peter Cetera on bass. Kath's guitar will have you needing an ice pack for your jaw after you pick it up from the floor!
When they were "The Chicago Transit Authority", they were the house band at the Whisky a Go Go in LA. One night between sets, Jimi Hendrix, who was in the audience, went to their dressing room after catching their first set. He walked up to their sax player Walt Parazaider and said, "You guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs and A GUITAR PLAYER THAT'S BETTER THAN ME! You wanna go on the road?" They said "YEAH!". And that's how they became Hendrix's opening act on a national arena tour.
You hear people talk about a band being "tight", well these guys were SO tight that Terry could start strumming his axe perfectly timed to when the others would finish getting set up and come in with him right on time, in sync, not breaking rhythm with each other, gliding into the song as smoothly as an Olympic ski jumper sliding down the ramp to the gold medal flight.
the solo just just doesn't stop
🔥🔥
Great Reaction. .RIP Terry Kath
Thank you.
I agree!!! Mind blowing, and I've seen this hundreds of times and know this song for 54 years!!!👍👍👌👌✌✌😁😁
Amazing song
And now they're using it on a TV commercial!
Nice reaction. Best ever live band
Thank you
🇨🇦 This is an example of why I say that the Best music created/sung/performed in the last Century, came from 1959 to 1989 ! 🇨🇦
Great response. Thanks sister!
Tanglewood is the super famous venue where the Boston Symphony Orchestra gives sold out performances. It has been around for a long time.
Tanglewood is a music venue and festival in the towns of Lenox and Stockbridge in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts. It has been the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1937. Tanglewood is also home to three music schools: the Tanglewood Music Center, Tanglewood Learning Center, and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Besides classical music, Tanglewood hosts the Festival of Contemporary Music, jazz and popular artists, concerts, and frequent appearances by James Taylor, John Williams, and the Boston Pops.
When this came out AM radio cut a lot of that guitar solo. Lots of people never heard the full version till years later.
Oh... wow that's interesting! I'm glad I got to hear it now
You should hear him sing the song "I'm a man" The best guitarist in his-story . They are still questioning his passing. It was not a accident..
What happened to him?
@@DTSQUAD it was 1978 and was said he was playing with his gun and it went off. He had a lot of great songs. Like " colour my world "
@@SIR-DanielHunter oh.... wow 😔
This song is a great lesson for creative people. If you’ve got writer’s block, write about the writer’s block.
It was so cool watching grooving on real music my dear. More please. Thank you
Thank you
Hey, great reaction, Dalisa! We grew up with all this great musicianship. We all played in each other's basements ( until we got thrown out :)). There was more lovin back then I see now. Anyway, great to see the young people enjoy our music! Inspirational! God Bless you!
Thank you! Oh... wow that's really cool and yes I really enjoyed reacting to this group. May God bless you too! Thank you!
And if you watch closely during Terry Kath's solo you can actually see him trying to increase the tempo..
I was going to mention how they kept pushing faster and faster.
THIS VIDEO SHOWS THE WORLD THAT TERRY KATH WASN'NT JUST THE GUITARIST AND MAIN SONG WRITER BUT THE BAND LEADER ITS ALL HIM DIRECTING THIS SONG
Great reaction, lovely lady! 😁
Ty 😊
TERRY KATH GUITAR OUT OF THIS WORLD ..INCREDIBLE BAND
The horns!!! Here we go!
You should listen to the studio recording of this song. Live versions can never duplicate the mix done in the studio and that's the way we heard it on the radio in 1970. This song was recorded in August for the self titled album "Chicago". The album was released in January 1970 and this song was released as a single in June1970. This live version is inferior to the studio recording. The band is from Chicago and was originally known as 'Chicago Transit Authority'. The CTA is the name of the mass transit system of Chicago, IL. They threatened to legal action if the band didn't cease and desist using that name, so they shortened it to 'Chicago'. The name of their debut double album is Chicago Transit Authority, recorded January 27-30, 1969 and released April 28, 1969 on the Columbia Records label. It didn't do well at first but fortunately, this during the advent of FM radio and eventually it sold 2 million copies on its initial pressing. The impact of FM radio can not be understated, it is what was directly responsible for the explosion of album sales and relegated the 45 rpm disc to a marketing tool to initiate /invigorate album sales. This was the beginning of the Golden Age of the music business.
Jimi Hendrix told Chicago's publicist that Terry was a better guitar player than he was. They actually had plans to do shows together. ---
When Chicago made the studio album with this song on it, Cetera's jaw had been broken and he had to sing it through clenched teeth because his jaws were wired shut.
Got home from Army in 69 lived in Chicago. Jamin times 70' in my 20's !! Brother knew Peter and Kath on gutar was better than Jimmy says ? Jimmy. Great wild times the 70's do more. Lol enjoy your reaction girl !!
Lol I bet it was a great and wild time. Thank you!
Imagine this Terry was going to launch a solo album before his untimely death just ,what could have been OMG !!
This is great!!!
Great reaction!
Thank you!
25 or 26 minutes until 4. That is when this song was being written.
Great reaction! Terry Kath was def a beast. This whole concert is 🔥 🔥
Thank you
The song is about trying to write a song. He’s been up all night and he sees the clock is now 25 or 26 til 4am. 25 or 6 to 4.
Terry Kath was in another dimension on that solo!!!
Also, Terry Kath was self-taught and didn’t read music
Oh... wow that's really good
@@DTSQUAD from that same live performance give “Beginnings” a go
He inspired me to be half as good as him. Still breaks my heart that he was taken so young under such suspicious circumstances. There is still a case open into his demise. There is a documentary about his passing and the way it happened and the shady people involved 😢 love you baby girl 😍💕
Yes, I remember you telling me how he passed away from what they said the gun went off while cleaning it. But if the case is still open, it's definitely more to it than they're saying.
just some info, it's 3 am in the studio, and the song is called 25 or 26 to 4 am, well, that's what it means
Thank you
Imagine being able to play guitar like that and showing up for an audition for a band of musicians who have never heard of you.
well it's a bit of trivia people dont know about but the singer-bassist had jaw medical issues and he had to work hard to be able to sing ... the AI didnt even know it at first but : "
You are absolutely right. Peter Cetera did indeed suffer a broken jaw in three places after being attacked by a group of Marines at Dodger Stadium in 1969. He had his jaw wired shut for a period of time, which did affect his singing style. There are several accounts of Cetera recording with his jaw wired shut, including those from producer James William Guercio and horn player Lee Loughnane. However, it's important to note that these are personal recollections, and the exact details of the recording sessions may vary depending on who is recounting the story. Cetera himself has said in interviews that the incident made him self-conscious about opening his mouth wide when singing, which contributed to his unique vocal style."
Oh.... wow, thank you for the insight. I never would've known all of this information.
really belongs with Hendrix and SRV category
your neck muscles are very expressive & pretty.
That's different but thank you 😊
You are delightful young lady, I'll be back and may subscribe. Saw them in 1970 'Goose Lake pop festival' (not the right name) had 300K hippies rockin. Most of us were on 'high grade LSD', oh well I made it through, old enough to be your grandpa now. Had a blast at your age. Stay sweet, 'live long and prosper'.
Thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words. Have a blessed night
You're so 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

👇•••TRUE STORY
💥💣👉•••Once, a famous music industry reporter interviewed Jimi Hendrix, and asked him how it felt to be the greatest guitar player in rock and roll...and Jimi answered, I don't know...ask Terry Kath!
Love that! Giving credit when it's due
I love to watch young people react to The Carpenters. Especially for the first time. My mother had anorexia nervosa just like Karen did so I know firsthand the devastation it can cause. RIP Karen and Mom. Oh your next video auto loaded while I was writing this. Nice! I love Tanglewood 25 or 6 to 4. Chicago Transit Authority 😂. I’m watching it on my 65 inch.
Lol thank you so much. Awwh I'm sorry to hear that. RIP to your mom and Karen
@@DTSQUAD. Thank you. Karen died so young at 32. If you do another Carpenters reaction I would definitely consider “rainy days and Mondays”. Karen and Richard made a lot of great music in the short time Karen was on this earth. And “close to you”. There is a video with Karen playing drums and singing “close to you”. I think close to you might actually be my favorite Carpenters song ❤.
RIP Terry Kath…
