10:15 Learn more about your gut microbiome!
I believe the best diet includes both meat and plants. But I understand that some people can't consume vegetables. Let's talk about how to support healthy digestion if you can't consume vegetable fiber.
The worst type of diet is the one that many humans consume. This diet is technically an omnivore diet, but the plant products are really mostly grain products, and grain products can lead to gut damage. Gut damage can make it difficult to consume foods with fiber, like salad.
One of the benefits of fiber is that it feeds your microbiome. Your microbiome has many different functions, including fermentation.
During the fermentation process, the microbes make small-chain fatty acids, vitamins, other acids, and secondary compounds that support the immune system.
But, if your microbes don't have access to fiber, they can consume other things. If someone is on a carnivore diet, their microbes can adapt to digest protein. You're not going to kill your microbes if you avoid plants. The important thing is to avoid grains.
While some people have difficulty consuming any vegetables, other people may be able to consume fermented vegetables. This includes foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, and pickled vegetables.
Fermented vegetables have additional microbes that may help support your gut. They also have prebiotics, vitamins, and other health benefits.
Tips to support your microbiome and overall gut health:
1. If you consume animal products, consume grass-fed, grass-finished animal products.
2. If you are vegan or vegetarian, don't consume grains.
3. If you have severe gut problems, try a carnivore diet with grass-fed, grass-finished animal products.
4. If you have less severe problems with digestion, try consuming fermented vegetables along with grass-fed, grass-finished animal products.
5. If you don't have any digestive problems, try consuming a combination of plants (not grains) and grass-fed, grass-finished animal products.

The timing on this is terrific in my specific case - very grateful for the work you put into helping us all stay healthy. And may I age as gracefully as you do!
I just appreciate that culinary culture of my country is built on fermented food - cucumbers, cabbage, sour cream, kefir, yoghurt. To almost any meat we eat a salad which consists of carrots, fermented cabbage, oil (in my country mainly sunflower oil, but in my family we use olive oil) and pepper to taste. We have also what's called "kapusta zasmaĆŒana" - fermented cabbage fried with bacon, carrots, onions, allspice, oil or butter and some scoops of flour (I know these are grains, but I think others benefits outweight it). Thank you dr Berg for your work!
Great đ do you mean Hungary?
The key đ is that symptoms are NOT always an indication that a food is intrinsically BAD for you. Oftentimes, it is an indication that you have simply lost TOLERANCE to that food. I see many people who have lost tolerance to high fiber foods, but once they address the root cause(s) *voila!* they can not only tolerate more foods, but thrive on them again. I see this all the time with FODMAPs and fiber in general.
(Fwiw, I agree with the basic premise of your nutrition advice in this video- limit grains and sugar, stick with grass-fed meats, and eat your veggies and healthy fats đ)
so in order to address the causes we need to get probiotics right?
@@user-qi3hf8ko3q not necessarily. Probiotics help some people, but not everyone. With IBS and SIBO (two big causes of bloating) I find that a lot more benefit comes from supporting motility and the gut-brain axis overall.
@@gutmicrobiomequeen Are you speaking of the gut-brain as the neurological capacity / functionality of the gut? Or the gut - brain communication? (determined by coherence or lack of, in the electrical curcuitry of the body, which in my opinion is a direct effect of s. a. d. combined with the stress of our western way of life in general )
@@inphiknitfractal I don't think we can separate the two. Heck, I think there are more layers still- the gut-brain axis largely refers to the vagus nerve, which is part of the autonomic nervous system. The ANS also has strong ties into the HPA axis (so, what most people would call "adrenal" stuff) and stress chemistry. When I speak on the topic, I usually layer it all into a mishmosh- vagus nerve, HPA axis/adrenals, mental health, and nervous system health in general. Hope that helps (even though it may have made it more confusing LOL)
@@gutmicrobiomequeen helps ;) I heard a theory that was apparently from the Rig Veda (saying apparently because it needs a key / initiate to be properly deciphered) that head intellect, heart intuition could have discrepancies with the gut (instinct) brain that could cause discord / stress and disrupt communication between the 3 centers. Sounded plausible ;)
(It was from an Oxford physics professor)
I love Dr. Berg's insight that we are all on a "digestive spectrum". Each person individually will discover what works best for them, and for some with severe gut issues, removing plants and fiber is a great way to start the healing journey back to omnivory.
If we remove plants what to eat instead?
Fat and protein. Paelomedicinia out of Hungry recommends 75-80% calories from fat, remainder from protein to heal gut permeability. Their protocol is called the PKD diet (Paleo Ketogenic), which is essentially a strict Carnivore Diet without any dairy or eggs in order to remove anything that could trigger symptoms. Then once symptoms improve, people slowly reintroduce plants again one at a time to make sure nothing is a trigger.

Yes i totally agree with Dr Berg I remember many years ago moving away from the standard diet to a Keto diet and quickly realised that the large amounts of plant fibres where causing me major issues about nine years ago when i came in contact with Dr Bergs CZcams channel. I remember one of Dr Bergs old videos about reducing the fibre content. I found the best diet for me is grass fed beef mainly (occasional other grass fed red meat) fresh fresh cod , salmon not farmed sardines etc and time to time good quality poultry. With vegetables only being fermented or pickled so like Kimchi, Spanish pickled garlic, Italian artichokes in extra virgin oil and pickled cucumbers. Good quality eggs and hard cheese . Anyway thanks again Dr Berg keep up the great work. đșđđ

Dear Dr. Berg,
Thank you for making this video! I am confused... I have been told about 2 different types of fiber and each seem to have a particular function in our bodies but nothing more has been explained about it. I would very much appreciate if you could kindly make a video about that and also give us some foods that are rich in one and others that are rich in the other type of fiber. Also the ratio of the two, should we consume more of one than the other? and what to look for to know which of the two we are running low on.

So difficult to talk about such subjects without including a degree-course in both biology and human-evolution to counter the usual pro-vegan or SAD muddle-heads. But one point I feel would aid understanding of a human-centric-diet that we generally follow here is that cats, dogs etc have a shorter digestive tract so are less prone to illness from raw-meat borne bacteria than humans and that we have adapted to survive from many food sources because of our opposing thumbs and the processing of food by washing, peeling cooking and fermenting prior to eating it. Thank you Dr Berg for continuing the improved diet of human-kind.

Dr. Berg, Please make short notes about what to eat/do at the end of your video. Sometimes I can't understand about it. Most non English people can't understand your explanation like me. Helpful video. Help us too. Thanks.
Excellent, Dr. Berg. Yes, people need to heal their guts. So being individuals, do what is best for you personally.
Anatomically, we as humans are omnivores, no doubt. Even our teeth resemble a cow's more than a canine's or feline's or alligator's.
However, seeing as how we've all been deceived by the grain culture, we are sick through no real fault of our own and may have problems, due to gut damage, digesting these beautiful, healthful plants, which add so much color and diversity to our diet.
I love plant-based meals and look forward to eating them more, once I've healed some health issues. Highest love to all.
Great video, I have experimented with meat only and salad/plant only diets and very quickly came to the conclusion that neither is a suitable option for me. Meaning that I felt both are necessary so I usually have a salad wrap with steak or meatball on it. I usually feel less bloating and gas like this plus feel more satisfied. I think I will take your advice and include some sauerkraut in my diet also. Kind Regards from Australia

About 2 and a half years ago I went to a clinic because I noticed a lot of abdominal bloating out of no where. It never really effected my life, but I would like for my own sake to have my thin abdomen back. No pain or discomfort, just a bit of constipation and lack of energy some days. It actually took me a few months before deciding to finally get it looked at.
At the time, I was 22, 6' tall, and 150lbs (height and weight are still the same today, which hasn't changed since high school). I never really ate well, I usually eat very little and snack most of the time, drink a soda once a day, typical 20 year old stuff, right? I was told I have IBS and should change my diet to high fiber and even start taking fiber supplements to help reduce bloating and constipation, and was given a list of things to eat and what to avoid.
After not even a week on that diet I found that the symptoms got way worse with more fiber in my system. I continued for about a month or 2 longer and still had the same thing. During this time period, I even stopped drinking sodas all together to really follow the guidelines and rule out every possibility that caused this issue.
I then tried the total opposite, low fiber ("BRAT" diet). Again, after only a week, bloating decreased, constipation lessened, and I felt like I had more energy. This was not certainly not the solution, but it was just a test for myself to try and figure out what works for me.
I tried a few other supplements, probiotics, prebiotics, cut different things out of my diet, and eventually found nothing that really made the symptoms go away. I ended up just going back to my old ways of snacking, soda, burgers, frozen pizzas, that kind of thing. As time went on, the symptoms lessened by about half, but are still there.
Never found a solution, and I'm still like this 2 and a half years later, but this video was really interesting to help confirm my belief that high fiber was actually worse for me. I'll try eating more meats like steak (even though I'm aware red meat isn't the greatest, I'll take it over chicken any day of the week) and see if that helps since I used to eat more meats when I was younger and try to lessen the carbs as well.
Thanks, Doc!
Yes. He explains this also in different ways in some of his earlier videos on gut issues.
He explains how red meat (grass fed & finished) is a superfood. How a nutrients rich keto carnivore diet may be most helpful in the case of gut issues.
The problem with consuming too much meat is that it can increase uric acid and can cause all sorts of problems and diseases,i know this is not the case for everyone but many ppl are liable. I had this problem a few years ago and i had to cut animal protein, i had pain in my joints. Another friend had to cut meat because it caused liver problems and liver problems lead to gut problems, he had 2 surgeries and cut meat for a while.I guess it all depends on the quality of meat we eat and how our bodies respond to it.

Excellent Presentation:
Hi Dr Berg, I noticed that you didn't mention Kefir amongst the fermented foods you recommended taking. Would Kefir also help your gut? And speaking of fermentation, would making your own sourdough bread help with the digestion of the grains, seeing as it ferments them?
One other question of great interest to me. I lived for some time in the Netherlands (I'm now back in my home country of New Zealand), and there the cows spend many months outside eating grass, but are kept inside during the winter months and are usually fed on a mixture of hay and maize silage. As this has taken the maize through a fermentation process, would that be better for the animal as well as for those of us who consume their milk or meat? Not sure whether thei maize is GMO or not. Thanks for all your great information.
I wish he had answered you...darnit...If i eat 1 slice of whole grain bread i end up with 2 days of bloat enough gas to run a car for miles...white bread and im fine..ugh (btw i use to make new england country kiefer back in the 80's in greenfield, mass great stuff ! !)
Yes, he answers kefir is awesome for guts. Heâs made a few videos on this â€
Yes, he said fermentation of grains helps in their digestion, like in some Italians do. But itâs still too high in carbs if eaten in the usual quantities.
Yes, fermentation of the animals feed help in the digestion of it, he mentions this in one of his videos a few weeks/ months ago. Thatâs how I started to ferment the feed to my chickens and saw more eggs production despite crazy low temperaturesâŠ
But of course if the feed is gmoâŠthat will kill helpful bacteria in the gutsâŠđą

Thank you, Dr. Berg. Love your videos
Thanks much! I'm so glad you're enjoying my videos!
Dr. Berg's Support Team
Really useful. Thank you. Digestion is definitely a key area for many, me included. I do wonder if kimchi retains its benefits after being barbecued? Appreciate your input and sharing!
Dr Berg has the most beautiful skin..aside from diet n lifestyle, Iâm curious if he follows a skin care routine???
skin requires vitamin C, magnesium, vitamin E selenium, zinc etc - for collagen synthesis these are a must. Also arginine is useful for collagen synthesis (glycine and proline does not have that much benefit - arginine is the precursor it requires). So seeds like pumpkin seeds, most other seeds, some nuts, are perfect for those contain these in a healthy profile. Pumpkin seeds are high in Zn, arginine, other micros, also highest in arginine (there is arginine in meat but the overall profile is not healthy if in large amounts, any meat, little is okay).
Well he does fast while having enough nutrients to nourish the skin despite fasting. Some of his videos on how to fast correctly answer some of that. He also uses his wheatgrass juice powder which I have noticed also improves my skin texture when I take compared to when I donât take it for a few weeks â€
Hey Doc, been on carnivore for 4 months, felt amazing. During the holidays I started incorporating some white rice once a week or so and since then I can't get rid of the bloated stomach & constipation feeling, I eat VERY clean so kind of lost on what I would eat to feel flat again.
Just... Go back to what you were doing before the bloat?
Stop eating the rice lol. Go back to carnivore for 2 weeks. Then add in another carb youâd like to add in. See how you feel. Then if THAT bothers you, rinse and repeat the steps above. Carnivore is like a neutral zone to see where other foods adding in agree with your system.
Rice is not carnivore and will make you constipated !!! Alot better after i cut then out
@@VanessaKanu lol yes, obviously that's the simple change, but I'm more looking to NOT stay on 100% carnivore forever so that's why I have incorporated some plain white rice, just seeing if there was something else I'm missing pertaining to the bloating aspect, maybe gut bacteria or a non diverse gut causes this more easily.
@@Dari0_13 White rice is very constipating
I feel so much better upping my fat, lowering my protein on carnivore. I was doing too much muscle meat and was starving.
Thank You for sharing this information.
You're most welcome
Thank you Dr. Berg, I was wondering what was going on with me. Iâm someone who gets bloated and fatigued after eating some of the smallest of meals. I cut out bread products and started consuming a lot of fruits and vegetables. My stomach would start hurting. I have been eating minimum amounts of meats. Now I conclude I should consume more for awhile.
I've found that bloating and gas goes away when dropping plants from my diet and sticking to mostly fatty meat
Sweet fruits bloat me most.
"Unlike professionals with an M.D. or medical doctor degree, chiropractors do not attend conventional medical school, nor undergo residency training, or obtain the same licenses that traditional doctors boast." You need four years of medical School to obtain a doctors degree to become a Dr. But for some reason chiropractors call themselves Doctor? without a medical degree! Hmmm?

If one doesnt have the ability to eat grass fed and finished. Would it help to supplement with additional omega 3? To keep the 3 to 6 ratio more balanced. Love to hear your thoughts Dr. Berg
Sardines đ
Another sardines recommendation here. I'd avoid omega 3 supps, omega 3 is still a polyunsaturated fat and very unstable/prone to oxidation. Most of the omega 3 supps have been shown to be rancid
@@ZackRamsey14 Sardines all day!!
That is what I do, eat quite a bit of fish. The practical-aspect, cannot afford to pay $20 a pound for meat, no matter how healthy.
