Gartska is the best drummer I've ever heard.
My mind is going in circles on this one
@@DrumRollTonyReacts "Monomyth" and "Gordian Naught" playthroughs are a must too.
Sorry but that distinction would go to iron hands Eloy Casagrande
He is in my top 3 as well.
@@Warchild0311 Eloy's great but Matt's got more finesse and is more versatile. I'd say Eloy is the best metal drummer out there, but overall, Matt's concepts and execution edge him out slightly. I do love Eloy's Brazilian influence into his playing....makes it totally unique!
Matt did a breakdown of this song and how he came up with the parts on his channel. That last fill was instigated by the second guitarist, Javier Reyes who said something along the lines of "you can't just end the song, you have to throw in some of that Matt Garstka shit!" LOL
No bass player. It's two guitarists on 7 or 8 strings and the drummer. Tosin Abasi developed thumb slapping for the guitar and that's why it's so thumpy and bass-y. They're amazing.
That's so cool
they do have a studio bassist and sometimes tosin records bass, which is added to the backing track.
They have bass in the studio. Wouldn't sound as far as it does without bass.
kids a genius, please dont apologize for going back and relistening to parts, having these songs broken down and having someone with a music background as blown away by this music as I am makes me want to keep watching these videos. more asl please
I feel like im becoming addicted to watching people forget how to speak as they react to Matt Garstka lol. Great video!
He has playthroughs of almost all songs of the new record. All insanely great. You really can‘t go wrong there. But favorites are Monomyth and Gordian Naught. There is also a great live version of The Brain Dance where you can see the full band.
Sweet. Thanks for the heads up
i second monomyth and gordian naught
“I don’t know what time signature that was in right there…” - Tony and every AAL fan. Awesome reaction, man, I really enjoyed you adding what you could. Easy sub for sure
6:55 I love your genuine reactions and the way you break it down. My dad is a drummer of over 40 years so I appreciate all the drum reviews without actually knowing what's happening on the technical level. It's been great introducing him to new music that I find from this channel. He also just casually says he is going to text and ask his friend Mr. Dennis Chambers if he knows who this beast Matt Garstka is lol. Thank you for the videos.
Tony's reaction at 3:57 is priceless... his face is just saying "duuude cmon..."
LMAOOOO this guy makes me question everything when he plays. haha
what's crazy is he composes everything in protools before sitting down and attempting to play it. Apparently this took a week to get clean and show ready
Love your endless wealth of technical knowledge about all things music and instruments. Pretty rare to have a reaction video channel with the amount of chops you have as a band teacher, it's great stuff. Another drummer I feel like you might get a kick out of is Chris Turner, who's primarily a metal drummer who just released a solo drum album. Any of his one-take playthroughs for his current album are brain-shattering!
Thank you for the kind comment. Also thanks for the suggestions
Good call on Chris Turner. As well, if you want to go deep on Garstka's influences (which overlap so many of mine / why I find such an affinity for MG), it goes something like this:
- Dave Weckl
- Chris Coleman
- Calvin Rodgers
- Stuart Copeland
- Dennis Chambers
- Vinnie Colaiuta
More Animals as Leaders here. Gotta gree with the rest of the comments about checking out the rest of the album as well "The Brain Dance" and maybe "Arithmophobia" and "Ectogenesis".
Matt (alongside recording amazing playthrough videos) actually has transcribed all of his drums parts for the album this song is off and has it on his website. I am a guitarist and I picked up a copy because I wanted to see his mind on paper like that. I highly recommend checking them out!
Hell yea!
The mix is amazing!
love seeing people finally catch on to Animals As leaders
Yep. And we watched the dvds and tried to decipher what the drummers did! Watching SOAD live at Big Day Out a thousand times😂
what a band they are. Matt is absolutely next level as is their lead guitarist tosin abasi. I would love to see you check out monomyth play through next!
Javier is no slouch my guy. How dare you not mention his name lol.
For real! Tosin’s a madman, for sure. But I’d say Javiers playing resonates with me more.
@@iancampbell5493 javiars latin flare gets me going i gotta say
He makes flashy drumming fit so well with Tosin’s guitar style.
Full band video : the Dunlop sessions has the interviews inbetween each track, or the live in Anaheim 2020 for the best sound
No bassist yo!!... Absolutely amazing band, one of my favs..
You should check out his playthrough of Monomyth, the whole song is base on groupings in this order: 2 3 3 2 2 3
Garstka recently put out a video of his thought process when creating the metering for Monomyth. Matt's in-depth analysis is a great look into how his drumming brain works. Highly recommend!
For some reason when you mentioned Bass i had the kid from The Matrix in my head.
"Only try to realise the truth..... there is no bass"
Tony: I'm gonna go back 15 seconds so I can try and understand this
Me: I'm gonna go back to the beginning to time and still not understand this.
I'm with you. Trust me lol
Tosin, Javier, and Matt are three of the most talented musicians on the planet. So happy seeing you react to Matt's godliness.
🤟🎵 I went to see them live last year. So damn good
in your video at 5:15 where you go back to replay that one section. That particular blast beat that Matt plays is so damn cool with specific accents within the blast beat making it very very unique. there was a podcast i saw with matt where he said he would like to incorporate more blast beats within his music but with accents. super cool
Great reaction, great drummer, great band. They definitely make people scratch their heads and grin. If you're into more instrumental bands, The Arsitocrats will seriously blow your mind. Marco Minneman is Gaska, with more time playing.
Garska is another level. This performance blew me away.
Highly recommend you checking out Sleep Token. The drummer from those is outstanding.
Oh this is a sick channel! you HAVE to look at some more Animals as Leaders. Greatest band alive
There was such a cool Thall moment in the middle there. Very un-AAL, but really nice.
Speaking of Thall. Check out Vildhjarta, their new album is so interesting. Their sound is specific to them
TFW when you realize there’s actually no bassist and only 2 guitarists
Yeah but there's bass in the studio and a backing track live.
and it’s crazy because there is no bass player, just the two guitars have a ridiculous number of strings keeping this together
The Meinl channel has a ton of well filmed and produced content, and it doesn't hurt that some of the best, most boundary pushing drummers are sponsored by them. Highly recommend the playthrough of "Ancient Kingdom" by Brann Dailor of Mastodon. Great drumwork and a completely gorgeous kit. Love the content, keep on keepin on 🤙🤙🤙🤙
Matt is a Beast among Beasties as a metal drummer/composer. But seeing him as a guest on VF Jams with Ghost Note behind him elevated him to absolute #1 in my book. His delicate and complex style there is like contrasting Mitch Mitchell to John Bonham... only Matt is apparently BOTH! 😳
top tier band and drummer
First time hearing/seeing this, but this is the shit. Meinl playthrough videos always look and sound incredible.
You should definitely react to Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree
Thanks for doing this reaction. I adore Matt's playing. Next on the list of drummers is Gavin Harrison! You won't regret it, he's the next drummer alive.
Got news for you, there is no bass players. There are two guitarists both of them being eight string players and Tosin Abasi has otherworldly techniques that cover slapping and pulling reminiscent of base technique and other percussive techniques mixed with alternate picking legato you name it. This is a group for those that simply love the art of music for the technical as well as the aesthetic and sound aspects
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
That's going to make further videos very fun
Matt garstka turned into JACKED garstka in like 3 years. Lol
there are 2 type of humans : those who had their brain blowned by AAL, and those who's not...yet
I refuse to believe this is a human being. An advanced android from the future, either that or sorcery.
🙏🏼❤️
Brooo Blood Sugar Sex Magic was a game changer
Matt Gartska, ladies and gentlemen.
He can’t just be a human and modulate between duple and triple pulses, he’s got to throw quintuples in there too. Also I think those syncopated hits you were trying to feel out were giving me the sense that they took a more traditional duplet-grouped rhythm and just sort of converted it to a quintuplet pulse and let the accents fall on the nearest equivalent beat.
I think you are right. How cool is this stuff. I love music 🎶 🎵
Watched almost all your videos so far, Love your insights, I think you would like the Band The Aristocrats . please do a reaction of the song ''blues f*ckers '' the drummer is just amazing.
Ok sweet. I'll check it out. Thanks!
I was lucky enough to see marco minneman live at the modern drummer drum festival... Holy shit.. hes an 👽 as well haha
this would be what aliens listen to
I think you should react to Archspire!
He has videos where he explains how he composes this tracks if you want to get into the weeds
You should check out Dirty Loops, Its a Quincy Jones produced band fusion band but with super catchy pop hooks. Work Shit Out should be a great song to react it
somehow missed your reaction to this. matt is for sure that guy that is your favorite drummers favorite drummer. i would say gavin harrison, thomas lang, vinnie colaiuta, and a few others are in that category. the least known guys relative to the mainstream that require a certain level of understanding to comprehend and appreciate.
Vinnie C! 🔥🤘
@@DrumRollTonyReacts definitely need a vinnie reaction in the future
I would love to see your take on Sebastian Lanser, ex drummer for Obscura
It's two guitarist and matt😱 wild, no bass here
That is wild for sure
best band.
love this, love AAL, go hawks
What did you think of the live show???
It was pretty fun BUT lol
I got in the middle of the pit and folks went nuts instead of listening to music lol lol
I gambled and lost
@DrumRollTonyReacts yup that was me - in the pit, fresh out of high school (back in 2012 or so) and had the time of my life, I remember I couldn't believe I was actually seeing them ! I remember Tosin brought out some weird prototype guitar just for tooth & claw
@5:35 Vildjharta has entered the chat. Lol.
Animals as leaders, your favorite bands favorite band. Well, if you’re into progressive stuff. You’ll often find some big names sitting in the audience at their shows.
I can imagine. I'm still thinking about this days after
Hey Tony. I marched with David Vaughns, Jeff Barber, and others in the 90s. I study Garstka's music on the daily - he's currently my biggest inspiration and influence for where I'm headed next. Most of this song is, believe it or not, in a very straight forward 4/4, 7/4, and 3/4. The super interesting work surrounds the displacement and modulation groupings. Also - you probably know this by now, but there is no bass player. Two 8 string guitarists who are on the same level, or higher, than Matt is, on their own instruments respectively. Lastly, I'm finally working on a channel as well, and, if you're interested, will reach out for some collab when it's up.
Oh shit! Dave was a tech when I marched. I see him pretty often when we have him as ax guest judge for Seahawks Drumline auditions. Same with Jeff here and there. Let me know when your channel is up and rolling
There is no bass player my friend,it’s 2 height string guitars, the 2 upper strings make the bass, take à look of a video from Tosin Abasi and Yavier Reyes, this band is from another World!Awesome
6:18 surprise they have no bassist.
Matt is insane and one of the best drummers alive right now. I highly recommend looking up Blake Richardson of Between the Buried and Me for another monster drummer unlike anyone else. He has some sick playthroughs of new songs like "Fix the Error" and "Revolution in Limbo"
Him and Alex rudinger are badasses too I just love Matt for my top spot
Fun fact, there ain't a bass player there! Just two 8-string guitars!
So wild and cool
AAL may well be the most influensal band there has been last decade.
Wait until the #nobass realization hits
I had no clue until folks in the comments told me my mind was definitely blown
@@DrumRollTonyReacts your channel will continue to experience massive growth. Your takes and insight keep me coming back. Thank you my guy
Thanks for doing this. Though it wasn't a response my request, I appreciate it all the same. Subbing for more great content like this! Monomyth is a great drum cam. It was the last song they created for their recently released album and the writing started off with some of the crazy stuff Matt was holding onto from his own brainstorming. He just released a second video on it where he breaks down the patterns.
His drumming is sublime, it feels like everything is where it should be when he plays.
Should checkout cafo live by animals as leaders he kills it live on that track: czcams.com/video/DzqUdY8HEv0/video.html
wait till he finds out they dont have a bassist
Seattle? Damn, sorry man for the near future breaking and entering when your setup disappears lol
sick, crazy drummer from hell😑😑
And then I told him there wasn’t a bassist
What about Gavin Harrison?
Go Hawks and go AAL!
Math Garstka
Matt is out of controln
Cool reaction, knowing your recent interest in "Asian rock", I had a couple of Japanese bands in mind to recommend to you... maybe next time, I preferred to broaden the spectrum instead, with something a bit different... two of the brightest young Japanese female drummers.
Senri Kawaguchi: czcams.com/video/mTyU1D1tFPM/video.html and
Kanade Sato: czcams.com/video/5jDVZPzfS1c/video.html
Highly recommended.😎
Crossed Bones. It's you?
"the bass player"
He doesn't know... He doesn't know. Nobody told him? Should we tell him? Maybe we should tell him.
Lmao yea, they told me. 🤣 How cool is this band 🎶🤟
chris turners triggered. a drummers dream
There's no bass, just tosin and javier
plot twist... theres no bass player for this band... never has been. 8 string guitars
Its from a text book only 6 "people" can read lol
Animals As Leaders is my new favourite band, their latest album is SICK (in the best possible way) and a breath of fresh air in a world of increasingly boring musical cowardice.
There is actually no bass player in animals as leaders
People need to stop spreading misinformation yes they do have bass in the recordings and backtrack live. Music is not going to sound thick like theirs does without Bass. Sometimes they record bass sometimes they use bass samples and sometimes they use synthetic Bass.
But what he didn’t know is, there is no bass player.
06:17 - But there is no BASS player.. :)
Lol yea. I had no clue. What a bad ass band!
No bass player, just 2 8-string guitars.
No bass player lmaooo just guitars
The guitar part is the bass lol they have no bassist
Lol yep. You and like 80 other comments have pointed that out
Animals as Leaders has no bass player. The guitar is bassed.
No bass player. Two 8 string guitars and drums
Preface my comment with I think Matt is one of the best drummers on the planet...my only criticism is I hate when drummers play a groove with a crash cymbal, he does it alot...over a ride or hi hat or china etc. Just a sound preference...his playing is otherworldly
Bass player...
...yup...
...definitely.
Not a dig on you. They sound GREAT.
It's an easy mistake to make.
They are just 2x 8-strings and a drummer.
Yeah, Garstka is one of the best drummers alive. Matt Halpern is also an absolute UNIT and in the same genre. I like Halpern just a bit more though.
Clean playing? “Clean” takes lessons from Matt how to be clean
no bass player...
> *bass player*
