Magnus and Badenhorst had a good rivalry that year.
Just to confirm: Paul Dickenson (who is my preferred commentator) said that Magnus was vying to be the first competitor to ever win two in succession (to defend his title); in fact, Bill Wilhelm and Kasmire did that in 77/78 and 80-82, respectively.

..that's sooo cool...ha haaaa..I was watching old clips around the same time..I can watch these old skool og's all day..and I'm 51 from chicago ..so og too.. but in a different way then these guys..I used to have some and still do have some respectable lifts but nothing like magnuson or pudjanowski or any of them...400 bench n 600 deadlift..but these guys have 600 benches at least and 800 deadlifts. . .esp that fiji islander osai..is it..?..or what about that canadian villieu..?..he's like 6'6" and solid 420 kg..I don't know what happened to him...or that Austria dude who got in that horrible car crash..
..and what about samuelson making the finals in his first even competition winning his heat..and the guy he beat arm wrestling was a giant too..I think close to 400 lbs solid...these guys make Eddie hall and Brian shaw look small ..well not small but u no what I mean..there's a few more that kind of just faded away or gave up or forgotten about..o d washington is it..black anerican dude.. what about Magnus ver magnuson though..I didn't know he won three in a row..kind of puts him up a a couple notches esp w that 1000+ lb squat to seal his third title..whoa..I didn't think dudes were hitting that heavy weight back then..but they were doing 450 behind the neck presses..!!..wtf..
..osai could've done 500 if pushed..that's insane...there's a couple others I can't think of right now..kazmier was pretty tough. way better then caepes..best of the 80s by far..i think magnuson was better then sigmarson but for some reason in iceland.. sigmarson s like a god..??..go figure..
..there's quite a few that slipped through the cracks w the right coach and training could've gone a lot farther. .look at Jesse marunde..but he had a heart attack..probably from too much anabolics..?...idk..how rigorous is the testing..?...anyway nice talking to you..

That’s what I was thinking. Kaz won three in a row but they always try to leave him out. Kind of like they did in 83..the most dominant athlete of his time he could’ve taken four or five titles in a row

There is no way during prelims did the officials say “now if you want to, you can actually walk the items up the stairs to place the items” on that last event. Gary Taylor would have absolutely did that and a few others too prob…that was a horse shit event, Taylor got robbed
Taylor was a 6 foot tall beta manlet. He was lucky to be handed over the title in 1993 despite his less than human height. Embarrassing really

@@AnthroGuitarist In normal life it's about 5'11", but for a pro athlete in a sport like Strongman, yes about 6'2" minimum. Basketball is 6'6" minimum.
Gary Taylor should have carried the treasure chest first, it had the length for him to leverage it up onto the highest platform. How did he not see that while watching the guys go before him? He worked hard and not smart there! That's the lesson to take away from that.
I would love to meet the health & safety team that approved some of these utterly ridiculous and dangerous events in those years haha!

Arm wrestling between guys who aren't trained arm wrestlers is also just asking for injuries

Yeah, but some were unfair for the taller men too. Gary Taylor, seriously... he was so not smart in that last event. He even had the luxury of watching before hand and should have worked out some tactics knowing he'd struggle with the sandbag. If he carried the treasure chest first, he could have hoisted it upright and used the leverage to push it up onto the top platform. There were no rules about order.

Phil Martin, lovely bloke, but he cracked me up... supposed world record holder in his speciality Highland Games events, and in both his heat and the final he was shit at them, and got firmly beaten! lol At least Gary Taylor did the biz and owned his specialist event!
Having watched all WSM as a kid since the early 80's i was easily impressed, watching them again now less so.
Magnusson in now way had his upper thighs parallel to the ground in the Squat in this, lots of missed lock outs etc.
The same with many of the pre 2000's WSM finals.
Yes, in all overheads, he didn't lock out, so unfair.
Man, I tell you, the depth across the board in the squat was so questionable! I know they were big weights, but that doesn't alter the fact that you're supposed to go at least slightly below parallel to complete a full lift! Magnus Ver has even said this on his social media of late! And that event was on a Smith machine too. All of these lifts were barely parallel. Not impressed looking back at that!
The squat event literally wasn't to parallel, for anyone. He wasn't supposed to hit parallel. You're making up a criteria as if this is powerlifting lol
All anyone had to do was hit the pins. Did magnus hit the pins and come up? Yes. Did they hit the pins at that weight and come up? No. You're acting as if he somehow cheated the event, it's like complaining that the winner of an 18 inch deadlift event didn't pull from 9 inches.
@@EVO6- No one cheated at the event based on how it was set up (not deep enough). But WSM rules should be similar to Powerlifting. Magnus Ver himself recently slammed lifters for not going deep enough in the squat and getting a clear lift. So I would like to discuss this 1995 event with him sometime.
Right. You can hear the bar hit the safety bars on the squat rack before bringing it back up. (A 3/4 squat) Definitely a good lift!

Gary Taylor, though, seriously... he went towards the end, and even after watching the other guys he couldn't figure out to take the treasure chest to the top platform first, where he could have used its length and shape to leverage it up better. What he did was so dumb! Unless he didn't know the rules that even the commentator knew. Disappointed in a fellow Welshman there!
Using the Flintstone Barrell as an example. Both Onosai and Taylor lifted 205kg and 210kg convincingly easy. We are still left not truly knowing which one is the strongest. If they could keep going until one fails, we would truly know which of them has stronger shoulders. I don't believe choices based on other competitors successful attempts should determine the next lifters weight attempt. Too many contests end up like this and we are still left wondering who really is the strongest!

@@jordanpratt3821 Yeah, I really wonder back then if the rules were really made clear to the competitors, or whether they were all just being sheep and placing the objects in the same order as everyone else. Because the commentator knew that they could place stuff anywhere! Obviously the really heavy stuff would have to go low, but there wasn't much in it weight wise between the chest and awkward sand bag.

Then he said that's why they're strongmen, because if they were smart they'd be doing a job that required intelligence.. lol Loved Magnus's charisma and sense of humour!
