Magnus Ver Magnusson, what an amazing all-round strength athlete. Was a huge privilege to have met him some years later in his gym when he was aged 50 and still lifting big weights!
The guy has won the masters a few times. Just a very naturally gifted fella, with a very competitive streak and a focused mind. To think he was a stand-in in the his first ever WSM and went on to win it! Never been repeated, probably never will.
People used to say Magnus only won these because of his speed and mobility but his Squat, Deadlift and overhead pressing were exceptional and would usually win these events apart from maybe Gerritt in deadlift

Such a shame that Baden and Kiri were prone to injury in WSM, but had massive success outside of that contest. Hoeberl was ended by the car crash. Poundstone just happened to come up against a prime Mariusz who was, lets face it, a level above everyone else. Yet Derek had beaten him in many super series that year! But Pudzian had set his mind to nothing but victory in the worlds. Gerrit is one of those fellas it'd be a pleasure to hang out with outside of competition though! Always a good laugh, entertaining the crowd.
Badenhorst is easily one of the strongest men never to win, same with Riku Kiri. The way he pulled that 410 kg is a perfect example of a true 1 rep max, smooth without any sticking points, but very slow & he couldn’t possibly lift any more. His 410 kg deadlift was the strongman world record for 15 years until it was broken by Brian Shaw. Kevin Nee technically did 410 kg as well in 2008, but it was very sloppy & he hitched like crazy so he wasn’t actually strong enough to lift it.

@@mannyob7164 OD only competed in a handful of contests because he died so young so we don’t really have enough data to say if he’s one of the strongest never to win.
@@janoycresva276 he competed in the wsm 1990 and 1991 sadly robbed in 1990, he passed away literally a few weeks after the 1991 wsm, I don’t know if the contest beat his body up to much as well, and just collapsed and died from a cardiac arrest

The difference between them is that Shaw competed against the strongest competition in history, while in Kaz’s case the World’s Strongest Man only had “world” in its name: a) 1979 - 8/10 Americans b) 1980 - 6/10 Americans c) 1981 - 7/10 Americans d) 1982 - 8/10 Americans 1982 was the last year when more than TWO Americans have participated in the WSM final until 2005 (only because the major competition left to IFSA). Shows you that Bill lacked the proper rivalry like Jón Páll, Ab Wolders and Geoff Capes in his prime instead of the ones who were automatically given the spots for being locals (no qualifications at that time). Maybe he would’ve won the trophy in 1983 (because that year Jón Páll came 2nd on his debut only because he finished very last in truck pull as he’d never attempted it before and already the following year he dominated everyone in that event winning the most points) but that would’ve been his last title. He was strong, no doubt, but him saying that in his prime he might have a chance against the best version of Žydrūnas is just extremely embarrassing.
Gerit's Hercules hold was his fault. The ref said "are you good with the tension?" Gerit said yes, and his arms were not out straight. That's why when the cars were released it pulled him outward.
Kiri had chronic ankle problems his whole career. Also had ankle issues in '93, and probably a minor issue in '94, missed '95 entirely. Pretty much always injured. As mentioned by the previous reply he probably didn't feel it was worth hurting himself further for an event he couldn't win anyway. Would have been nice to see him at full strength at least once.
