  • Join us on an incredible journey from Penang Island to Hatyai, Thailand, as we explore the beauty of Southeast Asia on a budget! 🚍🌏
Our adventure begins with a scenic ferry ride from Penang Island to Butterworth, Malaysia, with a fare of just RM2. From there, we hop on the KTM Komuter towards Padang Besar, where the real adventure unfolds at a cost of RM11.40.
But here's the twist! If you take the ferry from Penang Island, you'll need to watch out for the train schedule, as there are only 2 trips a day from Padang Besar to Hatyai. Missing the train means you'll embark on an alternate route, adding a bit more excitement to your journey.
Upon arrival at Padang Besar, we found ourselves facing a unique challenge. The only way to reach the Thailand border from the KTM station is either by GRAB or taxi. Our GRAB driver initially accepted our booking but canceled at the last minute, opting to drive a taxi instead, which forced us to pay RM10 per person instead of the usual RM5 for a GRAB car.
Crossing the border is an adventure in itself, with a van conveniently available just across the road for 60 baht per person. Once in Hatyai, we couldn't resist trying out Tara Seafood, a famous spot known for its mouthwatering Thai Pork Leg Rice that's an absolute must-try.
For accommodation, we chose SJ Miracle Hotel, a cozy and reasonably priced option just a 15-minute walk from Lee Garden, one of Hatyai's popular destinations. And when it comes to food, you can't leave Hatyai without visiting Run Khop Khun Noodle shop, where you'll savor one of the best Tomyam noodles in town at a very reasonable price.
Join us on this unforgettable journey filled with adventure, delicious food, and budget-friendly travel tips. Just wanted to say a big *thank you* for documenting this process. I'm planning a trip with my wife and 4 kids and informational videos like this are a super lifesaver for helping us plan for travel logistics and minimizing potential delays/issues. Thank you!

With that said, do you think it'd be worth/easier to take a bus vs. train with that size crew? Part of me loves the idea of doing a train just for the experience but I also recognize that the equation changes some when I have kids as young as 6 in my crew. :)

I figured out the dislocated schedule from Padang Besar to Hatyai is because of Islamic break in Kedah.
For some reasons, Islamic states take longer lunch for prayer, thus we could not ride direct train from Butterworth to Hatyai.
    From Padang Besar to Hatyai.
We were made to take minivan, to Thai immigration. But the advantage was they took us directly to hotel, not just train station.
On wayback, we took early train from Hatyai. It connected seamlessly to Butterworth.
The dislocated schedule was because of no Malaysian immigration/train services service ~11-1 pm for prayer break

🤔I'm not sure is it due to the Islamic break in Kedah. Cause not just Friday, in fact everyday also only 2 times route and the timing cannot catch up for those that took the ferry from Penang

      Check it out.
I took a train ride to Alor Star. Same 2 hr lunch break.
In Perak, from Ipoh to Kangsar, same 2 hour lunch break.

If you take the 12:35 KTM KOMMUTER from Butterworth to Pedang Besar it arrives at approximately 1430. Two hours later there is a Thai train that that continues on to Hat Yai for around Bt50. You got scammed.

No matter, there’s a curious 2 hr lunch break in Islamic states. (In Afghan, buses would stop to pray , no matter anywhere.)
In non-Islamic states, maybe different. In KL, there’s no such thing. Not sure about Johore.

Why you don’t just take a van from padang besar to hatyai? There’s a company there. You just have to pay RM30. They will send you directly to your hotel as well. They also will wait for you to stamp your passport

As far as I know is no more RM30, is RM65. Apparently I just wanna try out alternate way rather than usual sit in the van travel
