I wish fasting was more mainstream. I don’t mention fasting to people because when I do they freak out. Fasting and low carb eating is the only thing that has ever worked for me.

I know. I just tell them I just ate.
My son ate once a day the food his wife prepared for him.
He drank herbal teas all day and ate at 1900. His boss loved him as he worked right thru lunch with high energy.
His friends would try to sabotage his way of eating. But he was steadfast. His will power was powered by keeping his temple clean.

He was still stuck on the “5 small meals a day” ideology, but then I told him just try it and if you can’t resist, just stop. I made him watch Dr Fung’s videos. Every day I ate 1 egg, toast and milk for breakfast; 1 ham sandwich, an apple, 2 cookies and 250 ml. of chocolate milk for lunch; rice, stir-fried vegetables, a meat or fish dish, and milk for dinner. Yes, you are right, Dr. Fung, meals were not very exciting. We ate until satiated and no more. I was petite and slim until my 40’s. I had by then, started the high carb low fat diet recommended by the Food Pyramid. By the time I was in my 50’s I had developed pre-diabetes which I tried to reverse with the low carb high fat diet. I am okay as long as I restrict carbs. My experience with official medical/dietary recommendations have left me very skeptical. Thank you, Dr. Fung, for educating us.

@@only_6486 OMAD doesn’t have to be at one sitting, it can be at more than one but the goal is to have the fasting period of zero calories as long as you can, say 18 fast 6 eat, 18/6. If you can go 20/ 4, all the better. It doesn’t matter how much physical work you do. That’s a myth. If you have excess weight, your body will convert fat to the equal of food. It doesn’t matter if it comes thru ones mouth or off ones fatty acid stores. This will occur after you become fat adapted and will not be hungry or have cravings or hunger pains, ever again. Most certainly can’t stay on a high carb diet, have to lower carbs to more protein and fat, otherwise the hunger pains will persist.

I'm in the asphalt paving business, I stand 8-10+ hours a day, I physically work with a shovel, pick axe, broom, loop, tamp, etc I didn't think I would be able to do it at first, I only wanted to eat dinner.
I eased into it by eating something small to coat my stomach in the morning like a fruit cup or half a sandwich.
I think it took about 4 days to really get out of that feeling that I needed food to do all this physical work. But now it's no problem. I only drink water or unsweet tea in the morning and through the day. I don't really get hungry until later in the day when it's close to dinner time.
But yeah, I don't know what your job is but it's probably more physical than mine but we should all do what we feel comfortable with, either way we are dieting I guess so whatever works best for us. Good luck to everybody, I wish I would have done this years ago when I was younger.

This is true. In Economics it is called marginal utility:the more you eat something then the pleasure diminishes. When I was a kid growing up I never ate out. I didn’t start eating out until fast food restaurants became ubiquitous. Also it was quick to walk in to get a burger and fries as opposed to buying chopped meat, fries, cheese and buns and then go home to cook it all. Now you have apps on your phone that allow you to sit at home or work and order a meal with ease! It is incredible.

Blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides all are in the normal range now. I eat almost every thing I like but after eating, I give my body at least three hours to process what I ate and this makes the glucose to come to base level again. I also walk 30 minutes a day which helps a lot in digestion.

The only one that's really too good to be true is fasting from 36-86 hours at a time, but it really works and won't slow metabolism!
Some of the many benefits of fasting and low carb diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data:
Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system.
Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic.
Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque.
Weght loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods.
Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body.
Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy!
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus.
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses.
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention!
Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections.
After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system.
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging.
Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
In fact, the biochemical precursor to BDNF is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.
Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks.
Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.

People who are obese can find the ultimate solution in fasting, especially alternate day fasting (ADF). They can demonstrate to all the "you don't have the will power" bigots just how much will power they have. In my opinion, based on experience, ADF is very effective. You can eat almost what you want every other day and do not have to fret about calories. Of course, eating too much sugar and cake is not going to do you any good. The 36+ hours of fasting results in the shrinkage of the stomach so that you eat less on the eating day. Overall, the calorie intake drops by 60% or more depending on what the previous intake was. There is no desire to gorge on the eating day. There is some mild hunger, especially at the outset of this program, but it is manageable. Also, do aerobic exercise on the fasting days, it will help burn through the fat stores faster. The lie that the metabolism slows down without regular eating has destroyed the health of tens of millions. This lie needs to be exposed and this channel is doing a stellar service.

We have all of this cellular repair machinery (autophagy) but it is turned off because of sustained elevated insulin levels. After learning how industrial seed oils (aka vegetable oils) damage mitochondria and how mitochondrial function is related to cancer, I will never trust these medical "experts" again. We are simply not informed on the relevant science by the MSM and most people are not going to wade through the research literature to get the information. Fasting helps detox from omega-6 oils. This makes sense. The last restrictive diet I followed was keto. At first it was great. Then good. Then boring. Then gross. I was so sick of the foods after 6 months. I craved bread and starchy vegetables. When I got a horrible keto rash on my face, shoulders, back, and torso, I finally caved and ate potatoes and beans. The week long rash began to clear in just hours. I quit all dieting, resigned to just getting old and fat -- until IF. Now I feel amazing. No more bloating, no yo-yo-ing weight gains, no afternoon energy crashes, and best of all, no restricted foods. I crave wholesome, whole, nutrient dense foods most of the time, but I can also indulge in the occasional donut at the end of my window when I'm close to full (I never want a second one anymore). We just spent three weeks in Quebec eating all of the pastries (I just followed an easy 12:12 window most days), and it only took a week of going back to my normal IF pattern (20:4 is my favorite) to drop the vacation bloat. I was about 135 lbs when we left, about 140 when we got home, and I was down to 130 with no special effort. Maybe I'll even see 125 again someday (I'm 54, and that was my high school weight). And if not, who cares? I'm so grateful for this. Simple, sustainable, and free. No plans, no special foods. And I just move my window up or down to accommodate family gatherings or special occasions (and I'm just gonna continue to have long windows on vacations and eat ALL the yummy foods). This is living. Just wish I had known about this 30 years ago.

I thing that I can share based on my personal experience is that fasting TREMENDOUSLY improves the symptoms of PCOS and can cure infertility…after suffering through infertility for 15 years , multiple failed IVF cycles, years of fertility drugs…I almost gave up, then I watched a video by a fertility doctor who recommended Dr Fung’s fasting regime for improving fertility…at age 38 I became pregnant naturally after fasting for 3 months ..I had my daughter and then again at age 40 I had conceived my son after again fasting for about 3 months….it changed my hormones which then regulated my reproductive system….I CANNOT recommend enough how powerful fasting is for fertility

Everybody's told to eat slowly and chew properly their food, partly because it does help to kick in the satiety signal sooner, so you don't over eat. I can testify to that because I've always been a slow eater and as a result I have a very small stomach that simply can not handle the amounts of food I see everyone else eat in one sitting, I would be literally sick if I tried to do that.
Now, however, I am told that to get my insulin down I should be having just one meal a day, or two at the most. I understand the reasons very well, but I simply can't do this - I know, I've tried. I became malnourished because I have to continue to eat child-size portions and if I can only eat once or twice a day I simply don't get enough calories or nutrients to be able to function normally. I get very weak and listless and even my voice starts to fade. So I need to eat three, sometimes four times a day just to get enough food to sustain me. I eat clean, but I can't shed the weight unless I fast to lose the excess I have gained during feeding days, in an endless cycle.
It's ironic that those who disregarded the so-called good advice and gorge themselves on food at every meal and have stretched out, over enlarged stomachs can do the OMAD life style, whereas someone with insulin resistance like me can't benefit from it because I did the right thing all my life. Just saying.

It also helps breaking down nutrients. If you don't chew your food properly until liquified it will be much harder for your digestive system to process. This is especially true for vegetable matters. But we are all in a hurry these days, and most of us have become fast, unconcious eaters.

@@RedErin I'm a carnivore, as most vegetables make me sick. This is true of people like me who have leaky gut. Also, I've noticed that people are always told to listen to their body... until their body tells them something that contradicts dogma. Then their body is wrong, and the fact that you're fat and sick is entered as proof that you can't trust yourself or your body...

One of the main root causes of allergies and autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's is a leaky gut. Even aging is affected by a leaky gut as your immune system squanders precious NAD fighting infiltration of bacteria into the blood stream. This can be corrected with a combination of 72+ hour fasts, avoiding lectins, sugar, bread and pasta and supplementation with gut healthy foods.
