  • In the months since the invasion of Ukraine, Estonians, who share a border with Russia, are increasingly concerned about potential Kremlin aggression.

Despite the threat being low, more than 1,000 ordinary women have volunteered to join the Women's Defence Organisation since the conflict began. Car mechanic Mari Klandorf is one. She now spends her weekends training in first aid, guerrilla warfare and firearms and says: 'Russia might not be coming tomorrow, or the next day, but I want to be prepared.'

Estonia didn't gain independence in 1991. It regained its independence, since the country was occupied by the Soviets. There was a recognised Estonian government in exile from 1944 to 1991.
Estonia got independent same time as Finland. Thus it's more than a 100 year old state at this point.

@@looduselaps what are you on about? Estonia celebrated its 100th anniversary on 24 February 2018, precisely because we had a functioning government in exile during the Soviet occupation. So, de jure Estonia never cased to exist as an independent state. Even though de facto we weren't independent from 1940-1944 (then a brief moment before the Soviets reoccupied Tallinn, the National Committee of the Republic of Estonia proclaimed itself the supreme power. With official government in exile being declared in 1953 in Oslo) and then till the de facto restoration of our independence in 1991.

Does anyone know if they offer basic training for foreign men also? I know the men in Estonia go through training, but I am moving over from Australia in a week and would like to know if there is a way I can get some training in too. Australia doesn't have compulsory training.

There are lots of paperworks. Gun low is pretty strong in Estonia.
