It's very efficient in what it does but I don't think I would ever play this.
it's particularly good in a durdly white based control deck that is not very dependent on mana rocks and enchantments, but I enjoy playing to the board too much myself with all the permanent types.
I'm not a fan of blowing up all the mana rocks from non-green decks either. I'd rather encourage playing non-green.

Something that is interesting to me is that you'd think black would be close to white in number of middle ground board sweepers (the worse ones that don't compare to the top of your lists), but black isn't even remotely close. Like in the 5 Mana slot for white you have Fumigate, Winds of Rath, End Hostilities, Rout, and Slash the Ranks. At least 5 options at that CMC. What does black have in comparison? Crux of fate. That's it. Maybe Consume the Meek if you count that? The difference is one I find very interesting. Although diving into color differences is always going to get complicated.

One card I would also like to put up as a honourable mention for best board wipe would be "Time Wipe". Yes it's 5 mana, yes it's sorcery speed, yes it hits only creatures, but it very often saves you from having to pay extra commander tax by bouncing your commander or reuse ETBs or simply just saving your best creature. I am a big fan of this card and I can honestly say it has over-performed in my experience.
Also, I completely agree with Mr. Cherries about Merciless Eviction. It would be infinitely better if it was 1 less mana.

I like Bontu’s Last Reckoning in a budget deck with heavy artifact ramp or decks that can untap lands with cards like Wilderness Reclamation. However I agree that like 70% of the time it hurts to cast it because you either save half your mana for next turn or skip your next turn.

Just a word of warning...never completely dismiss a card. Most often there will be specific decks that have synergy with it. Always at least consider it, regardless how bad it seems on the face of it. For example, Bontu's last reckoning fits well in a Marchesa the Black Rose deck. Reasons: your creatures will probably all come back on your endstep after the wipe, and you have many mana rocks to untap, because it's grixis's way of ramping. So you have about 30% of your mana on your next turn available with a full board. Those are valid arguments for a 3 mana board wipe.

    • @NitpickingNerds
      @NitpickingNerds  Před 3 lety

But spending one more mana on that board wipe lets you use 100% of your mana that turn and the following turn, and there's so many better options for something like Marchesa

It's 5 mana, it EXILES all the creatures, and is trivial to strategize around so that it is one-sided.
It's also less than a quarter and has only ever been printed once.
I have a serious challenge for anyone who reads this: in any deck you think you might play Damnation, put in Nightmare Unmaking instead. If it ever, ever, EVER whiffs for you, I'll send you a free copy of the card, postage not included.

I have Bontus last reckoning in a black and green commander deck abusing cards untapping during each upkeep of each player,
Cards with exert like champion of rhonas profit along these mechanics and of getting constant vigilance via rhonas/vivian and else. I have to say that i've only had good results so far with bontus last reckoning in there, but this seems to be the only case where this card is playable ^^

Fumigate saved me so many times where a wrath of God wouldn't have, in a deck with few lifegain options it's great, merciless eviction is the greatest nightmare of superfriends and reanimator/indestructible decks and also works wonders Vs enchantress/artifact decks l especially if they have replenish or other recursion. Recently added austere command and it's often worse. Also cataclysm is insane, especially in my atla palani deck.

I have an Oloro creatureless deck, it's not my main deck but I like to tune it up every now and then. I started playing like 20 wraths cause i'm creatureless you know it seems a great game plan to wipe the board every 2 turns...but it wasn't lol As time went on i cut most wraths, i am at 6-7 now i think Damnation, Wrath of God, Day of Judgment, Cyclonic Rift if you wanna consider it a board wipe, Decree of Pain for cycling it at least it doens't get countered and draws me a card, Supreme Verdict, and Merciless Eviction to deal with planeswalkers.

I'm commenting at the beginning so you guys might mention it, but the latest addition to great board wipes I think include Spectral Deluge. Those Kaldheim commander decks had some sweet new cards.
With that being said, as a long time green lover (since the days when it was "bad" in commander lol, like 2013-14) o don't enjoy board wipes much 😂. I wish every deck was only allowed 2 board wipes.
I know they're important but I like the commander games where boards build up and you're having a war of board states, I don't enjoy.so much when every turn cycle has people removing scary stuff. JUST PLAY YOUR IWN SCARY STUFF LEAVE MINE ALONE!! lmao, rant over.
But really I kinda miss the 2015-17 commander days. Things have gotten too efficient nowadays.to the format I fell in love with. I still love commander to the point its the only format I play, but I long for the days of "battle cruiser" magic when average.cmc's were 4 or even 5 😂 when turns 1-3 was.everyone ramping.
Ahhh, anyways, love you guys lookforward to all your content.

Yep, I slapped a Merciless Eviction into an Orzhov deck thinking it was just a strictly better Austere Command. For some reason I thought for 6 mana you'd definitely get to choose two.
Choosing one felt so bad. Still exiles which is neat in some cases but being twice the cmc of Toxic Deluge for often the same overall effect is just confusing

Surprised you guys didn't mention Fracturing Gust - the ability to have that effect at instant speed is really powerful, five mana isn't bad and the hybrid GW mana allows it to be more easily cast.

And you destroy what four artifacts?
I think ifs worth running both because with by force you don’t destroy stuff you don’t want to
And it can be x to the equivalent to Valndal anyway

Yeah, they kind of underestimated a little bit the impact of enchantments. I have a Karametra Enchantress deck with 40+ enchantments (including enchantment creatures that would also die).
Even my wife's Ur-Dragon has 11 powerful (and important for the deck) enchantments: Dragon Tempest, Trace of Abundance, Journey to Eternity, Monastery Siege, Rhystic Study, Rhythm of the Wild, Temur Ascendancy, Defense of the Heart, Sarkhan's Unsealing, Kindred Discovery, and Sight of the Scalelords.
