    Recently got RP-450C and RP-280F, very happy with them. Bought Wharfedale Evo4.2's, and the sound was too warm for me, even with a treble boost. Also decided to re-arrange the room and switch to towers. I personally like bright speakers, though I do EQ the Klipsch's down a bit. Depending on the frequency, I bring the Klipsch's down 2 to 3dB above 1.5khz, and it makes them perfect to my preference. Haven't heard the SVS. I know there are other great speakers on the neutral to bright side that I'd like, but after being disappointed with the EVO4.2's, I wanted to have a safe and done choice. The Klipsch's are efficient and I very much enjoy their sound. While they will sound great on lower and receiver/amps, I know they sound much better with better amps. Current using an Onkyo TX-SR676, but plan on upgrading to the newer version of the Yamaha 3080 when it gets replaced with an HDMI 2.1 version.
    I'm here because I'm researching SVS subs and I just happened across this comparison. I played the Wharfedale EVO4.2 along side an RF-280F, and at the same output, the Klipsch really is about 8dB or so louder at the same settings (Rated 98dB vs 88dB). However, toning down the highs brings it down to about a 5dB difference. Still quite large!

    Sensitivity really only matters from an amplifier perspective. Klipsch and their high sensitivity have been popular with people that love tube amps because they don't put out a lot of power but sound distinctive. If your budget for amplification is constrained then you'll want more sensitivity to make those watts go further if you like music loud.

    • @ThatHomeTheaterDude
      @ThatHomeTheaterDude  Před 6 lety

      Murchy Murch I get that. Most people do externals when they get into this level of home theater. It’s defiantly not a requirement but a lot of fun if you have it dialed in. I really like the way these ultras are sounding right now. Very excited to have both to test side by side.

      Louis I am also deciding between RP250 and Svs Prime centre to upgrade from Wharfedale Diamond 220 for vocal clarity. Inclined towards Svs. I have Yamaha 677 Avr. I worried about harshneas/brightness because living room has brick walls hard flooring. Have PB1000 sub.
      I have read that Prime are also very good at half price of Ultra. My budget allows Prime. How do you compare Rp250 and Ultra? I have demoed RP 450 and LCR briefly but could not demo Svs in India.

    • @Lou14th
      @Lou14th Před 6 lety

      sanonmarsI preferred the ultras, 3 way design compared to the 250c which helped with the sound when you are not sitting in the sweet spot. As soon as I hooked up the ultra it felt like I actually had big cinema sound in my home theater. The only sort of negative thing about the ultra for me was the size, I had to make accommodations in my rack for how tall the center is.

      I haven't tried the svs but the elac ub5 are smooth and clean sounding. Not dynamic or very powerful but very clean, probably the cleanest sounding you'll find for $350ish a pair. They might not fill your audio fantasies, though, if you're thinking big dynamic dramatic rock and home theater speakers - like Klipsch or the impression I get of svs.
      I think the ub5 would be best suited for a small bedroom for tame and critical music and movie listening. The options you're choosing between are very different and could be complementary for different listening pleasures. Cheers

    Sensitivity just says it will play with less power more efficient than one with a lower rating. If your powering them with 200 watts it really won't matter much. You will probably just play the higher sensitivity at a lower volume to get your desired level. That's my opinion of course. The svs will sound good on AV receiver. Sensitivity has nothing to do with build/sound quality. It is a measure of efficiency, and the only thing it can accurately tell you is how loud a speaker will be. Higher sensitivity takes less wattage to get to the same Db level, so higher sensitivity = higher output. There are fantastic speakers of all sensitivity levels from the mid 80's to mid 90's.

    • @ThatHomeTheaterDude
      @ThatHomeTheaterDude  Před 5 lety +3

      Getting into the higher channel AVRs they struggle to maintain their advertised output ratings. If you are straining the AVR then it creates heat, heat leads to lower sound quality and AVR failure. Most people dont really have a problem with this, but for people that regularly listen to movies at reference or close to it then it matter more. Using an external amp takes the load off of the AVR and gives you the power rating advertised more accurately. This turns all the negative things about using all of the internal amps into positives. Better sound (clarity & defintition) lower heat on the AVR and longer life. The only con is higher cost to use externals. Hope this helps. You asked this in two different videos so im going to copy and past this reply so other people can benefit of your question. Thanks!

    • @hammer627
      @hammer627 Před 5 lety +3

      I have had both amps. The outlaw had a wider sound stage. It had really nice detail, however the highs sounded way to far back for my taste. They sounded like the upper mid and highs were behind the speakers. On the other hand the Emotiva was more oriented towards the upper mids and the highs. It didn't sound as broad and detailed as the outlaw did. Apples to oranges I chose the emotive. My svs pb4000 can do all that heavy lifting. So it just comes down to ur personal taste. If both companies could build an amp together I would b first in line...lol

      The problem is Klipsch fudges their numbers. Look at Sound and Vision reviews for modern Klipsch speakers. They exaggerate by 4-6dB consistently. One example of the Klipsch RP-150 bookshelf (www.soundandvision.com/content/klipsch-reference-premiere-rp-150m-speaker-system-review-test-bench) 88dB actual compared to 93dB claimed. On the flips side, the similar size SVS Ultra Bookshelf is rated by SVS at 87dB but the same measurement setup found an actual sensitivity of 90.5dB. www.soundandvision.com/content/svs-ultra-speaker-system-ht-labs-measures

    Of course the high sensitivity the better speaker. The main issue is that all sensitivity listed by different speaker manufactures are not comparable, because they use different measuring methods to measure their speaker sensitivity. @lusly258 Před 6 lety

      BlackMusicGenre hi, it's to compensate for the lack of power in a receiver. A power amp/ Emotiva will bring true clean power to your tower speakers, so they don't sound muddy or distort. Believe me it worked for me. It also frees up room on your receiver for your other speakers to give them more headroom

    • @lusly258
      @lusly258 Před 6 lety

      BlackMusicGenre its also for more power if u need it, but most receivers exaggerate their power ratings, and I was having trouble with my towers distorting at moderate levels, because the receiver was already out of gas,Naomi had to buy a power amp. • @joshfoss7407
    @joshfoss7407 Před 3 lety

    The short answer on sensitivity is how loud the speaker performs with 1 watt of power at one meter. Low efficiency speakers and high efficiency speakers can both sound great, but stuff in the 80s dbs lends itself well to high powered amplification (hundreds of watts per channel) while something like klipsch can use boutique amplifiers that are 25 watts or less. This is because every 3db increase of volume requires a doubling of amplifier power - so in some cases, the difference between 25w/channel and 200w/channel only gets you +12db gain. When you're doing things like EQ, it's going to matter with low efficiency. On top of that - all the major speaker brands lie about their sensitivity and all the major amplifier companies lie about their wattage output. That's before you even get into things like impedance that can affect real world power.

However, SVS Prime provide much better sounds in louder volume, and it produces more accurate sound and produce tighter base response. Klipsch is better when listening to classical music, while SVS is better when listening to pop, rap, and etc. I have industrial karaoke machine at home and SVS is MUCH better reproducing your voice. Just for movie watching especially larger scale movies, Klipsch is better for it's airy and louder mid base and staging it provides.

Klipsch provide something more like "fun to listen to" sounds if it makes any sense. if you don't care about the accuracy of the sound. Klipsch is better (better looking too). My entertainment room is 24ft X 33ft. Living room is 24ft X 28ft (but open to kitchen so.. more like 40ft X 33ft). All speakers are set to small with low cut off @80Hz. I tried 60 or 40, but my subwoofers sounded better below 80Hz.

      The SVS center has far much fuller sound off axis than Klipsch center speakers which have nulls. Also Klipsch mislead with their speaker sensitivity ratings as they do them indoors which gives them a bump of around 6db. So whatever sensitivity rating Klipsch gives for a speaker, always deduct around 6db to arrive at the true rating.

    I know I’m late to the party on this one, but the problem with the sensitivity number is way too many companies do not give you a true number and Clips is usually one of them. I’m not saying they make a bad speaker. I have clips in my home theater, but as many people will test them they are nowhere near sensitive as they claim another done subwoofers flat out showed you that that number basically meant diddly squat there were speakers in that test that were 67 dB less sensitive than another rated speaker. they played almost the exact same with the exact same wattage if that number was 100% true that should not have happened, this is just an observation from looking up tons of videos

  • @alphapie1428

    Having a frequency response higher than 20khz allows the speaker to start the roll off at, say, 18khz at 12db per octave instead of hitting a brick wall. Its a smart design choice.

      Ha ha...hearing degrades with age, as early as 18, or from damage from loud sources. One source says, "the highest frequency that a normal middle-aged adult can hear is only 12-14 kilohertz". So, might be a good idea to check hearing range (I think there are some tests online) before paying for sound that can't be heard.
      I imagine that is also a contributing reason to why speaker sound is so subjective.

I know you already know that’s it’s wise to timbre match LCR speakers. It’s kind of a all or nothing proposition. That’s the unfortunate thing about it. It’s a lot of work to swap out a complete HT speaker set up and hope that you will find your new choice an improvement! When you consider the new purchase and then having to sell your old system it’s actually a bit of chore...

      Hey man, don't underestimate centers with smaller drivers than mains. They're voice matched as close as you can get for a horizonal and vertical speakers that are 2 and 3 way sets. The center doesn't go as low but it doesn't need to.
      I have a jbl studio 420 center with dual 4" mids with my studio 580 with 6.5" and the center is all they make even for the 590 with dual 8 inch. The voices come through very clean and actually adds clean sound to the larger woofers of the 580 - That is to say I prefer music with the center playing than in stereo mode with it off. Same with the Klipsch, I was only giving a more contrasting example. These are big speaker brands, JBL and Klipsch, give them some trust and respect, they deserve it. I never felt anything was missing between the 450c and 280f.

      If you get speakers smaller than the ultras, put your budget into a really great sub. It will fill in the gaps of the lows from the rest of the speakers you chose. I know alot of this stuff isnt cheap. But the best practice is to buy and be happiest with your decision within your budget. The 280s are dirt cheap now since they are an older model now. You get great performance for low cost. Pair them with a 3000 series sub and you will be loving the setup. But then again. its all subjective so get what makes you happy. I love full thick bass.

Then I wanna get 2 SVS PB-3000 subs might as well run duals to balance bass with 2 SVS ultra surrounds are the ultra surrounds one of the best that you have heard? And to top it off 2 SVS prime elevation Dolby Atmos making my setup a 7:2:4 this should blow my neighbor’s door off the hinges? Do you think that setup is pretty balanced? The SVS PB-3000’s look to be the best bang for your buck they are pretty powerful running duals right? Would the bass from duals cause gunshots and explosions in action packed video games make my chest pound or would I need to get the 4000’s or ultra 16’s for that?
