The American Dream is dead, at least that's what a lot of people say anyway. What is the American Dream? What happened to the American Middle Class? And Why is the American Dream alive in Sweden? In this video I discuss the origins of the American Dream, and why some achieving upward mobility is more realistic in some European countries. Evan, I’ve debated moving for some time now; 2020 hit me and all of us pretty hard and I’m motivated to move now more than ever. I’m from West Virginia, and had to move back to my hometown Jan 1st of 2020. I was living in a small city in NC, some small medical bills and car trouble drained all of my savings and forced me to return home. I don’t know how much you know about West Virginia’s history; we are the classic American tale of poverty and the gap between the rich and poor. West Virginians don’t have the luxury of dreaming about what their life could be. Large corporations moved into our state, exploited the workers, extracted our resources and consequentially left a pattern of generationally inherited poverty. I want so much more from my life. I wouldn’t even know where to begin to tell you the truth. I don’t know how to go from broke, to becoming a Swedish citizen. I watch your videos to maintain my inspiration, and give me a goal. Thank you for making videos, I hope someday to meet you in Scandinavia.
Thanks for watching Joshua. I don't know your current situation, but you could look at learning skills that are in demand in Sweden, for example you can take an online class in computer coding or digital marketing, and then apply for a Visa.
just find a decent work and then invest your money. its not that hard. in america the rich is paying the welfare. in sweden it is the working class.

I'm almost 30. my mom grew up in a one bedroom apartment with her teen mom (she was born 6 years before the pill was invited) , her grandparents and an uncle. my grandmothers work place was in the room next to it. she was a phone operator or whatever it's called. when my mom was 12 she had never been outside her small town in Sweden. every summer she had to go to a summer home cause my grandmother couldn't afford to have her at home. Now my mom is in her 60s. she lives alone in a 3 bedroom apartment in the city center. she has a a summer house and a ski house in the mountains and goes abroad to paint every year. she has said that she will never live with a man again, and she doesn't need to money wise. even though she grew up poor she was able to go to university when my sister was in pre school and has a good job. she didn't even have good grades after high school, she had to take some courses to get her grades up first. she payed of all her student loans around 15 years ago. it's amazing what a generation can do. me and my sister are used to abroad vacations every year. summer houses, winter houses and 2 cars. we played whatever sport we wanted. don't think the class journey she took would be as easy in the states.

I think the problem in the US is that, if someone makes good decisions, has some luck, and ends up in a stable, high-income job, they become convinced that the system is overly generous as is and should be made more draconian, not less. I know this from my own work experience.
Hence the tech oligarchs who now censorship is at their will. And they annihilate competition...You are fed the news they only see as fitting.

I think that we can all agree that life is about balance. To have a balanced diet, work life, workout routine. No extreme is beneficial in the long run. I agree with you that Sweden and the nordic countries have found a great middle way of a free market but also a fair market. Americans (some at least) seems worried of losing their freedom, giving it away to the government. I think it comes down to how you define freedom. For me it’s the freedom of not having to worry about health care or tuition fees. Not the freedom to choose which insurance I can’t afford. Also understanding that My freedom might infringe on Your freedom. So actual, equal freedom isn’t as simple as a giving everyone the freedom but not the means to succeed. There is a balance, we all have to work towards that balance.
To add to this, the backbone of the Swedish definition of freedom is a working democracy. If you don’t trust your government, you don’t trust your democracy (this goes for both sides of the aisle right now). Then you’ve got bigger fish to fry than how high taxes you should have.

I agree with many of your points. Although the system Sweden has will not work here unless we impose term limits for all elected officials and install a rigorous oversight system. There is just too much corruption and very little accountability here.
I love the idea of term limits. Lifelong senators are surely acting on the interests of lobbyists and not their constituents.
@@EvanThomas Many times they have to tow the party line because the leadership of the party determines how much finding they get for re-election. This keeps them from compromising and working together to do what’s right for the people. That’s why I feel all politicians should only get one term in a specific office.
We actually have no term limit for any elected officials in Sweden, including the prime minister. So I doubt that is the core issue in terms of what makes a country more/less corrupt. However, I wish we did have term limits, on everyone. Don't see how lack of term limits does any good, in any country. Says the Swede with two relatives who sat in Swedish parliament for five decades combined...
@@jsvensson8234 Your political and economic systems are very different to ours. I’m sure your relatives who served are very respectable and honorable people. I did some research into how our systems differ. I’ve read that Sweden has many political parties. In the US, there are two main parties that in some cases are just window dressings. Huge corporations give donations to the parties for favorable treatment. That is the reason term limits are important in the US. Our politicians are always attempting to sabotage the opposite party and get nothing done. If we remove the opportunity to run again, we remove the majority of the need for them to sabotage the other party. They will not need financial support from the party to run another election. This incentivizes them to compromise more..

Born in Stockholm but lived most of my life in the US. Miami first but NYC was my dream so I manage to get to NY and went to college. Later moved to Florida, manage to get a great job… I know in Florida. Ended when it was bought out. American Dream for corporate. Tried to move back to Stockholm 4 years ago but my husband did not enjoy the amount of snow that fell that winter, he’s South America. So we lasted 4 months. So back in Florida we are. But I could have stayed. As I’m getting older and elderly care is simply frightening. So I am very torn.
My sister now is moving back to Stockholm.

Omg finally! Thank you. To hear an American finally understand the benefits of Social Democracy over pure unbridled Capitalism. Governments are supposed to work for the people’s best interests not businesses highest profit. Social Democracy threads that path best at the moment. Both are thriving in those countries

My father grew up in Sörmaland as a "Statare", basically a farmhand working for food and lodging. He got 6 years of basic education and eventually became a handyman (autodidact). My mother, whom is from Gotland studied a bit more and became a nurse. She is currently 96 years old and living in an elderly care facility in Eskilstuna.
I myself is a Master of Science and engineering since 30 odd years. I would call that achieving a dream even if I did not have a clear goal but saw education as a challenge.
Our Swedish way is by no means perfect and there is a lot left to do to it. And that is just the thing, there should always be self criticism and reflection in order to improve things!
Conspiracy theories are just a waste of time. The truth will come out eventually any way.
Evans you lost a lot of my trust in an earlier video by stating that Sweden's economy benefited from privatization of commonly owned businesses. There is no scientific facts to that claim! There is however scientific studies saying that there are no studies pointing to clear benefits from privatization!

I live in a border city between the two and as far as people go they are more or less the same. We do love to throw a bit of brotherly shade at each other when possible though. There have been many wars between the Scandinavian countries in the past and that has turned in to friendly name calling. :)
Norway has som unique and stunning nature for sure but Sweden is far from boring. Only the most southern part is flat. Someting like 70% is... er... non flat terrain.
So all in all I doubt the terrain nor the people should be your defining factor.
You should look into where you think the most opportunities are for what you want to do because I doubt the rest will disapoint whatever you choose. Unfortunately I can't really help you on that front. ^^

People would say they love less wealthy and "happy" countries (you know the stats), maybe because of the weather and the cultural atmosphere - because everything is said to be colder here in the Nordic countries. But they are still not content with just sunshine and promises of opportunities, are they?
Have you noticed that all Nordic countries have a cross in their flags? We do have very much of Christian influence on our culture, like in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount - that is: an ideal of caring, loving, sharing - and it is kind of anti-authoritatian (Lutherian-Protestant), too. Each farmer for his family, and also his (many related to him through marriage at least). Self-reliance within a village, like.
The Nordic welfare-states build on these traditions, about help to self-help and the like. "A decent man provides for himself, a slovenly man doesn't deserve any help", a proverb from the 19th C says.
But cooperation and mutual help was and is highly regarded. So there started all kinds of societies (föreningar) and movements (rörelser) for improving the lives of the poor people from the beginning of the 20th C. Sharing, being generose, and taking responsibility in the community. Pulling once share for the benefit of all. Like a viking at the oars. Caring like a big family.
Yes, it did take a generation, or two, or three. But there was a sense of self-respect and pride over the progress that was made towards a "decent life". It often was a very rich life in an other sense, because it could include a choir, a sailing club, a craft or hobby shared with others, dancing-clubs, library clubs, study circles and workers' academies, enormous pic-nics reached by bicycle or skis, folk fests, tending a garden-plot in a community garden, lavish private pot-luck dinners, etc.
In your opinion, what is lacking in the USA, that these things are not done by those concerned there now, to improve their own lives in the lower quintiles and the middle ones? It puzzles me greatly. I know there are some spots of great examples here and there, but not enough to show in the overall statistics.

From what I understand. One Big difference between large US and Swedish companys. Is that the CEO in US companys, has a background in sales.
But in Sweden and Europe the CEO has an engineering background.
Therefor they have a Bert different mindset of how a company should be run to make a profit. // Michael, Uppsala, Sweden
Indeed. But the lack of social scientists in corporate leadership roles in Sweden is definitely a factor in Swedish companies’ trouble (compared to American competitors) competing in emerging markets. You need experts on technology as well as culture if you want to be successful in a global market. Sweden could do with more intellectualism in corporate leadership in general, not only focus on practical expertise .
So, is here a great job market for Americans like me who might eventually want to move to Sweden. I am an urban planner I love to know what you think.

Great vídeo Evan. As a Brazilian citizen I see corruption and coporatism as the main factors which contribute to social inequality. I guess that governments in general should do their best to reduce corruption and increase socialist policies to provide their citizens better life conditions, access to public health, education and better opportunities. Its not so complicated but involves a lot of fights with the "elites" that don't want to share their privileges.
It is incredibly difficult to get rich in Sweden. No matter how hard you work, the system is designed to try to keep people as equal as possible. Canada is a good example of free healthcare etc. But if you work hard enough, you can become very well off. Australia is the same.

Very interesting and easy to agree to. The other country that I've lived in where I believe "the American dream" is most achievable is Australia. There you can most easily afford a big house and nice car from work without education.

I feel like this video misses the point on what people mean with the American dream. Especially conservatives value it highly, and at the same time don’t care that much about upward mobility. It is simply the wrong statistic to look at when talking about the issue. My sense is that the actual sentiment behind the American dream is about doing it yourself via hard work, and precisely not via governmental help. Social mobility programs on the other hand often do involve a lot of governmental intervention, or even explicit help of disadvantaged groups.
Don’t get me wrong, I do think that social mobility is super important, and hugely favour the system here in Sweden. Also you are by no means the first one to make this argument, it shows up every now and then in Swedish media. But I think it misrepresents the views of many advocates of the American dream, by trying to connect it to a metric that it was not meant to represent.
but the legend of American Dream has a lot to do with the oportunity for the imigrant has in USA, maybe is not the case of sweden.
I’ve heard even though Sweden is a utopia like place to live compared to the US, but Swedes tend to be more anti immigrant/Muslim. Do you have any thoughts on whether welcoming more immigrants and refugees would be good for Sweden and why Swedes may be more resistant to welcome more?
One thing the US def does better than us is diversity. Hands down. We're not there yet. But perhaps, one day...
There is some truth to this but the issue isn't as onesided as the statement makes it seem.
1. Sweden was one of the countries that took on the most immigrants during the huge wave of 2015.
2. Sweden is really bad at intergrating the immigrants we accept. Creating a lot of frustration and anger on both sides for a very inadequate system.
3. The issue with 2 + the growing political devide happening all over today has created a large backlash that created a very non-immigrant friendly political party.
4. Sweden is also the most secularized country in the world and the muslim countries some of the most religious. This also creates a big devide where Swedes cant imagine a world where religion tells you what to do and to a portion of those muslim immigrants religion is the law, even above the country's law to some.
I could go deeper into some of these issues as to why it creates friction. I think a majority of Swedes want to be able to take on more immigrants but due to the points mentioned it just creates a lot of problems.
Issue 3 wouldn't be as much of a problem if issue 2 was solved for example.
We really are piss poor att intergrating people from other cultures... I worked at the outskirts of some of those facilities where people stayed during 2015/16, and I heard a lot from colleagues who worked with intergration how horrible the situation was at some places and how naive the government seemed in handling things. As someone who sort of worked inbetween the two sides I got very frustrated on behalf of the immigrants and att the same time very frustrated at the behalf of the locals who were suddenly dealing with hundreds of people who were their polar oposites on the cultural scale with no tools from the government to help ease the situation. It was madening. You could sort of see the problem from both sides but do nothing about it.

A change of mindset is probably what is needed to change the system in another direction. Probably needless to say there are many who oppose this for various reasons and the current system in the US has many dubious means of supporting it. Fox News once labeled Denmark as a socialist state and compared it with Venezuela (!). That clip's so called facts were anything but correct and many Danes responded to it and corrected every false allegation, hopefully putting Fox News to shame. Of course I know that not every American is a huge fan of Fox News, but where would the average American get correct information from unless they happen to have an awe for politics and social development? Are there any sources in America that can provide them? Even if there are, how can the population convince the two political parties that a change is necessary? There are many questions, but the topic is interesting and let's hope the process will begin soon.

Funny. I have a solution for this insanity. I am currently writing a book about a new social system that will be all about fairness and honesty.

I usually refer to Christianity ( as a left freetime politician) Mark:12:31. If You see taxes as insurance instead it makes sense. Here in Sweden we got more bang for the bucks. We don't need insurance to get healthcare, we don't need to buy food for the children at school, we don't need to pay fully fee for daycare for the children, we don't have to pay for our kids to go for higher education, when elderly need nursery-home they got it as fast the community can fix it, and You don't have to pay a large amount of money to get it. And, Yes, our social system isn't flawless, we have trouble as well but looking in to other countries... the nordic countries, we have a good life here....

I am actually trying to popularize many of your country's policies while at the same time bringing improvements to what could be even better. And there is basically just one way to do it. The faults that all countries have right now all have the same sources in fact and they could easily be fixed if... And there are about 30 pages needed to explain this if. It will make more sense why I say that when my social system will be out in printed format.

Its like Goopher says, sweden was one of the poorest country in Europe att 1900, a big chunk emigrated to America, the promised land.
After that there was few workers to exploit, and a surge for democraty and workers right, we hade all our political fights/strikes/lookouts/violence and social unrest !
The thing is that we got strong labour unions, that got influence in our parliment.
Its a long story, but it comes out as, we need to compet with other nations to get whealty and then share that, kind of equal.

USA needs to look north to Canada if it wants to start to restore its middle class. Start with health insurance. That would be a huge step for the USA. Next impose term limits on the senate and House of representatives, as well as all state governments. And last but certainly not least, end the two party duopoly and implement proportional representation at the federal and national level. Abolish the electoral college which is a relic of slavery. None of that is likely to happen due to entrenched interests and corruption in the USA.
I agree that the two party system is failing. Perhaps parliamentary legislature would be better.

You see the problem not the solution. Exporting jobs (globalism), and importing cheaper labor (migration) is what is displacing the American dream (middle class). That is a fact. Your also comparing billionaires to minimum wage employees. Thus the big divide. The last I checked the US has over half the worlds billionaires. I will say this with complete honesty, even though we're dealing with these challenges, I can still go outside my door right now, work hard, get an education if I wish, and still be upper middle class. Its my responsibility, not the governments.
The way I see it, with the current type of capitalist model the US has, it is only a matter of time before it tears itself apart from the inside. Critics of FDR decried "socialist" to fearmonger in American politics, but FDR explained it was policies like the New Deal and the GI bill which were saving capitalism from socialism. At this rate, the American economic capitalist system is not sustainable, and it will only continue to be so unless capitalism is put back on track.
I know there is benefits to compassionate capitalism but what with the slow population growth , the homless being as high as LA, USA 1 out of 300 . Why has there GDP been on a drop for the last 8 years ?

I was born in Norway, and lived most of my life in Norway, surrounded by socialists all the time.
I have lived in other countries, and I see the USA totally different, as well i See Norway totally different from your perspective.
You talk about wealth distribution, the poorest quintil own 8% in Sweden compared to 2% in the US. Start by comparing what that wealth is firstly, and then go to the three quintils in the middle and compare what they own in real funds.
This guy rants about income equality but a billion people have risen out of poverty since 1981 and everybody is getting richer so what’s the problem. Also Sweden and Denmark rank highly on social mobility because their top marginal tax rates are 57% and 56%.

To start with, health care system for everybody like in most of the European countries. I never could understand how it is possible that there are people in the USA without a medical care. One old friend of mine, originally from Mexico who became USA citizen, explained me that the way the healthcare system work in USA, it makes that an old person that could need a cataract surgery, he or she could have difficulties to find a doctor wanted to make that surgery because the doctor will win 500 buds only and he o she prefers to do something much more complicated that gives him or her more money as benefit.
How it is possible that you have the best hospitals and doctors in the planet but there are still people without basic healthcare? Of course, healthcare is a business but it is also a human right. And the state should be sure that that right is provided to everybody.
In a program of Oprah Winfrey with Michael Moore, there was a lady who was supporting the insurance companies and who said that there are queues in the hospitals to get certain services in Europe. Michael Moore answered that in the USA there was not queues because the system took out 40 million of people out of the queue. And they don't have medical services at all.
A real improvement in education for everybody. Education should be a way to help people to move in the social ladder.
I lived in New Jersey in the middle of the 1990's when Bill Clinton was in his second term in the White House. It happened then the terrible killing of Columbine High School in Colorado in 1990s. Two teenagers made bombs in their homes and accumulated weapons without their parents knowing. As the then First Lady, Hilary Clinton, said, "we are so busy winning 100 buds more that we don't know what our families are doing". I prefer not having a car or an expensive car but having a nice family life. Not everything in this life is money.

It will be very difficult. Egalitarianism and socialism is fear mongered heavily in the US. The US wants the "freedom" that makes rich people richer, but then wants to complain when poor people are all over their streets and taxes are too high.

You do know there is a quite large area between capitalism and socialism right ? Sweden is probably more capitalistic in some ways then USA also really close to socialism in some areas. Everything isnt just black or white.
This American disagrees with you. If I can't arm myself to the teeth with as many guns as I want, say whatever I want without fear of government persecution, and live off grid on my own homestead, as well as associate with whomever I choose, then I would say the dream is dead(it's not if you're in the US). Seeing as how that's not really the case in Europe anymore, (with the exception of a few very B A S E D and red-pilled eastern European countries) least of all Scandinavia, then I would say no you are absolutely NOT living the American dream.

I hate it when you do these educational videos. You bring in pieces of American politics, economic theory, business, and government policy. All these facts and statistics and dates make my brain hurt. Why do you have to make these thought provoking videos?! It is painful to have my thoughts provoked! Why cannot you do a simple video similar to like what they have in an episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians, like you should do a fun easy video where you go to a plastic surgeon to get butt implants. Or maybe a binge eating contest with those swedish Semla cream filled pastries. That is the kind of easy, simple, non thought provoking video the world craves! Just kidding
